BB? No. 22 mag, probably. But one should really go .223 or bigger. I prefer the .44 'cause I like 'em close and I'm not interested in the pelt.

Subby doesn't know a whole lot about coyotes. There's a reason a lot of Native American tribes made it their god of tricks and lies.

Also...

Thats because Alabama does not have the police union the NYPD has. Make sure 10 cops (8 on OT pay) go to the job.

If a 10yr old with a BB gun got to it first, he would be arrested for "interfering with an ongoing police investigation"

a bb gun---come on

what are you going to do--put it's eye out?

moops: No, an eight year old with a twelve gage. They're driving bass boats by then, why not?

Actually a 12 gauge might be a bit much, and the bb gun is a little light. For a kid that age, I'd go with a .222, less kick then a .223 or a 22-250, but still plenty to drop a 'yote.

/30-06 or a 7mm does make a bigger cloud of red mist though.

A backwoods hayseed would just shoot it, instead of trying to catch it.

I've been shot with a BB gun, so I'm getting a kick, etc.

And I don't think a BB gun would take down a coyote unless you held it to the coyote's head.

Here in Kansas, coyote hunting requires at least three 4x4s, one of which is a flatbed truck with a dog box on back to carry hunting dogs to run the coyote down. Mandatory: not less than 1 case of beer per vehicle. Actually killing or catching the coyote is optional.

Headshot from < 20 yards at 10 pumps. I think that'd do it.

Or you could go with a break-barrel air rifle. No need for pumping.

??? The multi-pump (versus break-barrel) pellet rifle will probably not get beyond 700-750fps muzzle velocity. Even at 15 yards the projectile will have slowed noticeably.

How much kinetic energy do you think is in a small lead pellet traveling ~650fps??

Yeah subby, turn someone random person loose with a gun (no matter how harmless) in Manhattan. Great idea.

I think I shot a coyote's leg clean off with a REAL gun and it still swam all the way across Delburne (22 long) lake about 15yrs ago. So I think you don't know what the fark you're jubbering about

Why kill a coyote at all, though?

Unless the coyote was attacking or killing my livestock, loved ones, pets or innocent people, I'd rather just shoot it with my camera.

Scare it off if it got to close? yes

Kill it because it somehow made it into an inner city or a place you don't normally see one? No

How much did the tax payers spend just to catch a friggin small dog? Way too much

/I know, I've seen some big coyotes too

There is nobody who is too small to handle the recoil of a .223 or .22-250.

My .22-250:

Read it again, Sparky. There is very little kinetic energy in a .177 lead pellet traveling ~650fps.

And you did not shoot "a coyote's leg clean off" with a .22LR, you dim bulb.

I think we all agree it would be a great idea to let this kid loose in Manhattan with a gun:

To hell with that. Do it with a knife or just be content with being a pussy.

How did the coyote get there in the first place? Delta?

It was definitely a change.

2010-03-25 07:40:23 PM
Here the State Trapper snipes large numbers of them from airplane every year. It is done to protect livestock.
My kids did get two foxes with a daisy BB gun. I thought it would take at least a pump BB/pellet gun to take a fox down. It was more about extremely close range and point of impact.
When I was a kid my brother played war and we would shoot at each other with daisy BB guns. One day I caught one dead on between the eyes and that was the last time we did that.

Coyote population is pretty well established in NY state. 15-30k individuals is the estimate IIRC.

Coyotes are a self-solving problem. Leave out some rope, maybe a strong leather belt, some rockets, a catapult, rocket sled, etc. Then let a road runner loose. One and done at that point. Coyote will off itself trying to catch the damn thing.

2010-03-25 07:45:21 PM
It would have been cheaper to have a road runner go through the city, then booby trap some giant crates that say ACME.

then he'll have sex with his cousin and forget how to read and write.
