I cant think of anything more useless than Indiana township government. My township has $2 million in reserve funds and paid out less than $100K total last year.

FTA: Washington Township Trustee Frank Short said he chose to devote so much time and money to the lawsuit because the verdict might have bearing on future cases.

Oh, ok. Well, no outrage for me today.

WaltzingMathilda: FTA: Washington Township Trustee Frank Short said he chose to devote so much time and money to the lawsuit because the verdict might have bearing on future cases.

Also FTFA: She appealed to the Board of Commissioners, doing so, she said, within the required 15-day window. The Board of Commissioners said she had missed the deadline by a few days.

It didn't help that the Board of Commissioners had recently replaced its administrative law judge and, according to court documents, no one was able to track down parts of Cooper's file -- including the postmarked envelope in which she had mailed her appeal.

The "future cases" he refers to are apparently the ones the administrative office mishandles and refuses despite a qualified applicant. Our local townships spend nearly $2 in administrative costs for every $1 in aid. My guess is this township is now 3 or 4 to 1.

It's not really about her, it's about all the people who will come after her with similar hardships. It's not worth it to spend $20K to avoid paying $750, but it could be worth it to avoid paying $750 X 10,000.

i don't get coupling a capitalized LOL with a period. if something is so funny that it literally makes you laugh audibly, isn't it worthy of an exclamation point? i mean, i know things are backwards in indiana, but still.

Indianapolis Star investigation last year found that Center Township was spending $1.69 in administrative costs for every dollar it distributed in poor relief.

Exactly why we don't want the government running anything that requires redistribution of wealth.

Thankfully the current government realizes this...right?

Can't be helping the needy. Not with "relief funds". And we should by all means not help her additionally with helping her get child support, or some other assistance. Blow $20,000 in insecurity "mine's bigger" funds. That's the way to go!

Man... the only animal who can actually be evil... intentionally... and enjoy it.

it's fairly accepted to drop periods from acronyms, so i'm cool with that. but when i see "LOL." my internal voice reads it in kind of a droopy dog sad laugh, and that makes me sad.

schnee: it is the principle of the thing

I wonder if I could use that for a defense when I "cock punch" this stupid trustee? Prolly not.

To eliminate Township government in Indiana is to eliminate the birthplace of nearly all state politicians. It is at this level that the precinct committee chairperson starts out to do the grunt work of local politics. The State legislature will never actually do away with it... they'll get close, but always, there'll be something that kills the bill before passage. How convenient.

Oh, and about those administrative costs... most of it goes toward hiring family and personal friends. They aren't supposed to do it, now, but I'm not holding my breath.

This isn't just about government. Any bureaucracy is this way... big business, health care, military. Their "default setting" is always NO - DENIED.

It was mightily convenient of them to lose that postmarked envelope, mightily convenient indeed. Anyone buying that?
