I like it!

FTFA: That has posed problems because the ships are now gathering in a spot where the Navy conducts missile tests.

This seems like a self-correcting problem.

Shocking that they'd follow an economic incentive, isn't it?

And here I thought I could be the first to point that out.

The Navy is certain that it was your filthy fuel that caused your ship to explode, and we would like to see you try and prove otherwise.

I was about to say this problem has an easy solution. Looks like leftshue is one step ahead of me.

Behold - the libertarian solution to externalities!

Read TFA to mean the Navy needed the ships closer so they could test their missiles.

First thought was.... "Gee, can't they just sail out to them?"

/blond moment.

//it was AWESOME!!!

It's that simple. If you wasn't smoking, you wouldn't be exploding.

This is not new, ships burn bunker fuel out at sea and diesel close to shore.

Submitted by someone who probably things glaring at an oil refinery constitutes being eco-friendly.

The fuel most ships use is quite nasty stuff... bunker fuel, if you've never seen it, is basically a jelly like tar.

Only costs about 50 cents a gallon or less because almost nobody can use it... only really big vehicles can carry it plus the heating gear to make it liquid (it has to be heated even in the tank to keep it liquid) and it's really dirty. Check this article:

PDF:How 16 ships create as much pollution as
all the cars in the world
(new window)

Basically bunker fuel is bottom of the barrel, thick, dirty petrochemicals. Reclaimed (not recycled, just recoverd) from cars and trucks sometimes gets added to improve the mix.

When spilled in water it doesn't spread out like gas or oil and form a film on the water... it floats, the lighter fractions evaporate, and what remains is heavy enough to sink. It forms balls of tar on the bottom.

The group I used to work for actually had a lot of people fooled by running an April Fool's Day column in our weekly newsletter about that. We wrote up a story where the Savannah, the only nuclear power cargo ship (which has since been retired) was going to be converted to run on wind energy with big windmills on the deck. This was the start of a new "green" movement in the maritime industry, in our story.

We even got one of the trade publications to take the bait. The email after that was hilarious.

Why would I apologize? Not all laughter comes from flippancy. Some is inspired by delight.

I didn't think you could regulate more than 12 miles off the coast. Shows what I know...

Pollution is a myth! Fuel exhaust is harmless. The environment doesn't matter. This is just to force companies to spend more money.

That headline made my hair hurt.
Shouldn't there be a comma after dirty, or a hyphen between "air" and "polluting" or something so that it makes better sense?
Come on, this is Fark. We can do better than that.

Just seems like the nice thing to do when you scoff at a point somebody had raised, only to find out folks have been doing it that way for going on 30 years.

People are so naive. Yes, and do you know that most of those cargo ships you see work on a 6 cylinder straight in-line engine. Most of the engines still in use that burn bunker fuel were made in the 40's and 50's.

I've been on 600ft. ships fully laden that can do 8 knots on that crap fuel.

That's just a sky sail. The Japanese Shin-Aitoku-Maru had sails.

I think the part the "hippies" have a problem with is the stuff that goes in that yellow-orange box on the left there. Eventually it gets too used-up to be useful, but it's still too yucky to just throw away (nobody want it in THEIR back yard).

That's where the hippies have a problem.
