couldn't this just be earthquake lights (which i guess are just as unexplainable as ufos)

It was the floodlights on the evil American earthquakemobile.

The Mars Gorilla is a recognized phenomenon documented by nintendologists as the likely archaelogical remains of the proto-Donkey Kongite civilization.

Localized auroras from tons of tectonic friction or something was the most recent explanation I've heard.

A buddy of mine wants to move to Chile. I am emailing him this article. Based on the careful reporting evidenced in the article, I strongly recommend he avoid Chile,

I saw a thing on National Geographic channel about this - apparently as rocks move over each other before the earthquake it produces a static charge, which leads to earthquake lights/ufos before or during the quake. Or something like that.

Only problem is, Earthquake lights typically look like auroras I've read, not orb shaped objects emitting light.

so, i was out in the woods banging my girlfriend, and suddenly there was like a bright flash of light that we thought was a UFO, and then it went away.....so I went back to banging her, but she said there was no way.......

That's the idea. Imagine a large vein of quartz or other mineral snapping before/during/after a quake. Lightning, ball lightning, radio interference, etc. A general glow. Like the piezoelectric starter on your gas grill or cigarette lighter, but the size of a small town.

Assholes want everything instantly and cry and complain when they don't get it. HAARP has to idle for a few before you really let her rip.

If only there was some other rational explanation for earthquakes.

Pick up two rocks from an ocean inlet near a sandbar.
Strike them together HARD.
Sparks occur.
Picture this on a gigantic level.
TA DA! Earthquake lights!

UFOs?
Seismic pressure + rock-acting-as-cork... make sense now? They've seen explosions strong enough near the floor to shake submersibles from over 1,000 miles away. That's a BIG explosion - think a low-caliber bullet fired from the bottom of a 10' pool.

2010-03-22 03:47:31 PM
It wasn't a UFO. It was the CIA's earthquake plane. Why do people have to jump to the most ridiculous explanations?

2010-03-22 03:47:58 PM
Alright... Thought exercise time...

Let's assume this means what they imply it means, and that aliens were spotted hot-footing it out of there. So, if we make that assumption - why were the aliens fleeing?

1) They caused the earthquake, and were taking off so they didn't get caught.

- If they were able to hide themselves before, why would they assume they would be instantly found once they caused an earthquake? All they did in that case is draw attention to the fact they were in the area. Besides, why cause one earthquake? If their purpose is to sow destruction & chaos, why not make the whole world shake? Or at least the whole hemisphere?

2) Something they were doing underwater went a bit pear-shaped and the earthquake resulted.

- Given they have the power to cross the gulf of space and/or dimensional barriers, why would they fear a little earthquake, which (if I'm thinking correctly) would have little or no effect on someone underwater?

3) They were completely innocent, and the earthquake caught them by surprise too.

- Not likely: Aliens just happened to be on earth, underwater, just outside of a country that was to experience an unprecedented earthquake.

4) A couple alien teenagers got a hold of their dad's seismic pulse cannon and decide to go "Primate tipping" on a large scale.

- A distinct possiblity.

So when is Chavez going to announce the truth to the world:

That this was an evil imperalistic plot by Obamacare and BushCO to use the HAARP to intimidate the poor South american victim countries into caving to the demands of the United States of Agression.

HAARP - has the word "auroral" in it

Auroras are lights in the sky

Lights in the sky were seen during the earthquakes

therefore...

HAARP is being used to cause earthquakes! PROOF!

When I was a kid, about 11 years old, I saw the moon rise from the west, go up to about 25 degrees, and then set in the west again, all over the span of half an hour. Me and my buddy ran inside to report what we saw to an astronomer, but we couldn't find a listing in the yellow pages. So we fretted for a while, and then just forgot about it. Until now.

Its a massive piezoelectricity event. Works the same way your BBQ lighter does. Just with bigger rocks.

wiki:

Piezoelectricity is the ability of some materials (notably crystals and certain ceramics, including bone) to generate an electric field or electric potential[1] in response to applied mechanical stress.

Alphakronik: Only problem is, Earthquake lights typically look like auroras I've read, not orb shaped objects emitting light.

Not near the equator, the choriolis effect causes the intrinsic spinning of the lights to appear more orbular and much less like a street light.

the End Times are upon us! We have less than two years to prepare for the final days when the Wandering Ones from beyond the stars return to us and deliver their judgment! Beg for mercy, fools, beg! 2012 will be the end for us all if they choose not to spare the selected few!

How about that maybe they noticed the earthquake and wanted to check out the damage? Intergalactic rubberneckers, basically.

It was either (or a combination of):
1. piezoelectric charge/discharge from the stress on the plates
2. Gasses emitted from the ground as the plates began to shift

Quite frankly, if you live in an area that has had significant quakes in the past (ring of fire, new madrid etc) and you see pretty rainbow patterns in the sky or orb-like lights, it is time to make sure your preparedness kit is stocked and ready. Also time to avoid old buildings that are not on floating foundations.

Now, there is another theory (of mine, independently shared by others) concerning solar activity and large quakes... this one applies to both the Haiti quake and the Chile quake. You see, the sun sometimes has these magnetically charged filaments that grow off of the surface. They will get large and eventually collapse back to the surface of the sun. Sometimes these collapses emit a large amount of x-ray and microwave radiation, but rarely do they produce charged particles like what cause geomagnetic storms.

Well, a few days prior to the Haiti quake there was a HUGE filament on the sun which collapsed. Likewise, a few days prior to the Chile quake there was another (but not as large) filament which collapsed.

Does this mean the collapse of these filaments causes the large quakes? I cannot say that with any degree of certainty. What I can say is that these filaments are not terribly common (not as common as sunspots and CMEs) and there happened to be one before each large quake.

The next time a large filament is spotted, I will be on the lookout for quake activity after it collapses. It would be interesting if there is a correlation which may allow us to understand the dynamic relationship between the sun and earth much better.

The description never seems to be "it looks like a big spark".
