I don't mind this guy popping up every 6-12 months or so, but it'd be nice if the showcase would be NEW ones, not just the same undeniably cool but now somewhat stale works of LEGO art.

Well he's a professional artist whose sold work for 19000 pounds, so I doubt you can call it "free time".

It comes from the elvish word "Legolas", named after the creator of the Legos.

I'm not ashamed to say that as a grown man, I own Lego, and have seriously considered buying a vintage "Galaxy Explorer" kit on eBay (alas, common sense prevailed).

Hopefully, when I have kids they'll appreciate this fantastic toy, and not just crave whatever crappy electronic distraction the age presents.

Oooh, I have the Galaxy Explorer back home. In fact, I think it's still intact. I was really into Space Lego. I (or a brother?) had the Galaxy Commander (new window) too, which was really cool. It divided up into three sections.

To be wholly technical, the name LEGO comes from the Danish words "leg godt" (play well). The guy who invented them (a Dane - forget his name off hand), combined the words into LEGO, which has turned out to be a very apt name for one of the best toys ever. Whether there truly is a proper plural for LEGO other than just LEGOs, I have no idea. :)

/I'd put a snappy slashie comment here if I could think of one.

I suspect Stockholm was chosen because Sweden is where all but one of the Nobel Prizes are given out. Of course, being a pun on the peace prize, the only one not given out in Sweden, perhaps Oslo would have been more appropriate, since that is where that particular Nobel Prize is given out.

I had the Galaxy Commander too. It rocked. I sat down about a year ago and was still able to build it from memory. I was so proud.

Never managed to get the Galaxy Explorer though. I wanted it SO much.

Building it from memory is pretty impressive. I seem to remember it being quite complicated to build.

The LEGO brand name should always be written in capital letters

LEGO must never be used as a generic term or in the plural or as a possessive pronoun, e.g. â€Å"LEGO’s.

When the LEGO brand name is used as part of a noun, it must never
appear on its own. It should always be accompanied by a noun. For example, LEGO set, LEGO products, LEGO Group, LEGO play materials, LEGO bricks, LEGO universe, etc.

According to lego's company profile (new window)

I've got the free time to do that.

But conversely, the free time (ie: lack of employment) means I can't afford the bricks that would allow me the chance to make anything of substance.

i collect toys and have a pretty huge lego collection, and i browse online lego sites and toy sites for inspiration and such. having said that, i'm really not that impressed by this guy.

i mean sure, his creations look neat, but he's only using plain bricks of the same color. honestly, any one of us could make those exact kind of sculptures if we had enough bricks. give me a hundred thousand red bricks and i'll make lifesize lego people too, it isn't that hard.

the real creative lego people find new uses for existing bricks, and their creations are ten times more imaginative. the most amazing creations are the small ones, where someone only uses fifteen lego pieces to make a miniature city or something, or uses lego pieces to create a sculpture that looks like smoke or water splashing, or something like that, where lego is hardly the best medium.

i wish i could give links to some websites, but i don't really have any i can think of. seriously, just search online for original lego designs and you'll find stuff way more impressive than what this guy makes.
