TFA:: Well, it has something to do with environmental activist and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. And it could be the beginning of the end for Comic-Con as we know it. More info after the jump.

According to The Beat, the Hyatt will, instead of Comic-Con, host the 2010 AHA Health Forum Leadership Summit, the guest list for which includes Newt Gingrich, DeeDee Myers, Ken Burns and Freakonomics author Steven D. Levitt, as well as Gore.

In other words, it has almost nothing to do with Al Gore.

So the event has been growing in numbers anyway, and many felt it should already have moved to a larger venue, but Al Gore has ruined the event? Yeah, great article.

If you RTFA, its a bunch of enviro-nuts. Gingrich simply plays along with those weirdos, presumably to assure he never wins a Republican Primary again.

Okay, so ONE hotel is hosting the health summit...

No reason not to fill every other hotel and available space in the city with Comic Con and furries and people in bad or strange costumes.

AND THEN you go to the lobby of the health summit. Show them they can't trample the masses.

I'd rather have a hotel full of rich white people and the people they draw then a bunch of linux programmers wearing their WoW costumes and holding anime parties.

Why wouldn't it be in Vegas anyway? Better location in so many ways.

the SDCC was already getting too large, even before Al Gore was around to "blame" for this new health care conference.

living in San Diego, i've read many a news story where local residents were tired of putting up with Comic-Con, despite the ridonkuous amounts of money it brings the city and the benign convention attendees. unfortunately, San Diego itself is not a major metropolis like NYC, where the NYC Comic-Con is huge but makes for a drop in the bucket compared to the entire city.

i'd personally like the SDCC to stay where it is (because i can just drive into downtown), and i'm wondering why the Hyatt went ahead and agreed to holding the conference at the same time, rather than try to stagger the dates, but i can understand people wanting to move Comic-Con out of SD.

implying Al Gore is to blame is a really REALLY bad red herring.

I had a similar thing happen to me when I attended the World Science Fiction Convention in Kansas City, 1976.

I was there to see Robert A. Heinlein, and our convention started the day after the Lions Convention wrapped up.

But at the last minute they announced they were staying one more day, to finish up on unfinished business. Screwed everything up.

It was totally inexcusable, but they did it anyway.

I agree, this is an outrage. They should move it to Austin, TX.
