Officers and a specially-trained dog met young people coming off a number of bus routes.

Um. The dogs...smell knives?

I think they would be involved with the "while drug testing was also carried out" part of the story.

I wish that they'd start harassing 13-17 year olds on the Metro.

And at the movie theater.

But don't worry; given that this is England, every person arrested with be given a firm warning and made to promise never to do it again. If they do commit another crime, it is entirely possible they may be warned a second time or given a jail sentence of a period not exceeding a two days.

I dont think Orwell intended 1984 to be an instruction manual Britain...

I guess the Founding Fathers were on to something with the Bill of Rights. At least in the US, they have to be creative when they search your person without probably cause. Over in Britain they just tell you to bend over and enjoy it.

Unless they are defending themselves against a criminal. I which case they will be roundly condemned in the Parliament, the press, and be sentenced to years, perhaps decades in jail.

While the criminals will be hailed as innocent victims of someone lying in wait for them, be given psychological and jobs counseling, a free attorney to sue the person that resisted them, resulting in them taking possession of the supposed victims home and possessions, and all at public expense.

Ah, compassion. Gives you a warm feeling all over, doesn't it?

It's not a drug test. Walking past a spaniel is not a drugs test. A drug test means pissing in a cup. This is a carrying drugs test.

Incidently, I work for a multi-national company. The US employees have to have a drugs test as part of their employment contract, the UK ones don't. Just saying.

Hundreds of police officers were on the streets of Nottingham throughout Saturday night in an effort to tackle knife crime in the city.

And they thought banning guns would solve their crime problem.

Who could possibly be surprised at this? The Brits have let their country sink into a moral and sociological tar pit.. again and as a result have to resort to heavy-handed practices not seen since rationing and hiding in tunnels.

It's always been a bit of a backwards collection of countries anyway, if they had taken a little more direction from U.S. police policy then measures like this would not be necessary. I mean, you certainly don't see the US government treating their citizens like this.

No, only the black and brown ones.

Having dealt with both, will take UK cops any day over the totalitarians here.

Suckling at the Government teat for too long has a pacifying effect on the rebellious spirit ... Why else would politicians be willing to sacrifice their careers to ram legislation through that the Public doesn't want? They may lose their seat in the short term, but they know in the long term it's a victory for their party and power and their deals are worked out well in advance.

Austin PD doesn't have time to do that, they have much bigger public safety issues to deal with, like someone smoking a J in the privacy of their own home.

Drunk driving in Texas is considered socially acceptable, and is largely ignored by the cops.

Yes, the Uk has had almost 14 years of a "liberal progressive" govt and fascist little displays like this have resulted. This is why Libertarians sit on the right side of the spectrum and why fascism is a leftist end game. They called it "National Socialism" so they would attract followers interested in socialism, and socialism is what liberal progressivism is all about.

A politician losing their seat just means a "lobbyist" job somewhere. At full congressional salary for life in addition to whatever their new job pays. Even if they only "served" one term. And the only way that can be changed is if the congress consents to it.

In other words, here's a heartfelt fark you from the political class.

Checks and balances are a great thing at the beginning of a constitutional republic with specific enumerated powers. Given enough time though, the monster that is the state will loose it's chains, and from time on those same checks and balances will make it impossible to restrain the beast short of outright bloodshed.

Basically the only chance Amerika has left is for a reverse dictator to come and use the full measure of it's military terrorize the political/financial class, reset absolutely everything federal back to square one, then leave DC and never look back.

In other words, we're farked.

robxiii: Wow, what is happening over there?

People in the UK don't stand up for themselves and let the government/police do whatever they want to them. Meanwhile you should see the furor over there about Google Street View. You would think someone just raped and killed their children the way they go on about it.

"THEY ARE ASSISTING THIEVES AND TERRORISTS!!!!"
"GOOGLE SHOULD HAVE TO GET PERMISSION BEFORE PUTTING YOUR HOUSE ON THERE!!!!"

I think you have the order of your "things to be outraged over" screwed up there Brits.

Having lived in Austin my whole life, I'm gonna have to call bullshiat. I have walked down Lamar more than once smoking a pipe in broad daylight with no issues. However, moving my paraplegic friend's car less than 1 block when I was about 4 drinks in resulted in a DWI. And the city and state make a shiat-ton of money off of a DWI - about 100 speeding tickets' worth. In conclusion, APD would love nothing more than to peg a productive citizen with a DWI, while all but ignoring other problems such as rampant homelessness. Over and out.

Hey, UK, your constitution? Next time, GET IT IN WRITING.

2010-03-21 11:29:41 AM
What about breatherlyzing each member of Parliament before entering the House of Commons and House of Lords and randomly during sessions? The public should have complete trust in the sobriety of lawmakers. If the politicians have nothing to hide, they should have nothing to fear...? That is what the tell the public.

2010-03-21 11:29:46 AM
I can't imagine it was very successful. The first group of yobs that runs into mass searches texts their friends, who update fb & twitter and text their friends, who tell their friends, etc. A surprise attack against a group of people is lucky to succeed for minutes only with today's open communication.

This. Ford Motor Company has plants in South Africa. The South African workers are allowed to have smoke pot on breaks.

So yea, things are different in America. Doesn't England have a Queen?

The IRS in the United States is not much different.

If you do anything more complicated than a 1040-EZ, they get all in your personal financial business, demanding to know where every cent you earn comes from, and what you spend things on.
