I was just reading James Fallows, who reports that apparently the next thing the House is going to take up after this is immigration reform.

That should be fun for the teabaggers.

DamnYankees:
I thought that was the count without Stupak.

Latest count I have is 214 without the Stupak bloc, which was 8 votes.

And the vote a few days ago on allowing "deem and pass" passed with 222 votes, which I figured then was the possible universe of obtainable votes. Getting Stupak allows Pelosi to free up a few vulnerable people, so it might end up a few less than that.

or kick off a wave of domestic terror attacks. either way, it should be fun to watch!

Two questions:

(1) Is this vote going forward no matter whether or not the Dems actually believe they have the 216?

(2) If yes, what happens if they fall short in the vote?

I prefer Gingrich's take (new window) on this whole thing. Very classy, and in no way shape or form indicative of entrenched Republican Racism

Fun for everyone. On the other hand, the "framework" is being worked out by Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham, so it's bipartisan out of the gate. Poor Lindsey Graham. He's about to be ostracized even more than he already is.

Highly doubtful. If the vote goes forward as scheduled, it means they have the votes. If they don't have the votes, they'll delay the vote.

(2) If yes, what happens if they fall short in the vote?

Utter chaos.

you don't call for a vote until/unless you believe you have the votes in hand. the only thing the Democrats aren't sure of is just how wide a margin of successs they'll have when the dust settles.

I remember reading that Pelosi has never lost a vote since she's become Speaker. I highly doubt that will happen here.

2010-03-21 01:05:08 PM
Weaver95: yeah, but that wasn't the primary plan. of course, they never wanted this vote to take place at all either, so obviously the primary plan failed.

i'm just making the point that there are many ways to still kill health care reform and still make it look like things have changed for the better.

Well, they are playing their hand. They tried to block reform at first, but when they realized the public was pushing hard for it and blockage was a lost cause, they changed strategies and got into the process in order to influence it. Very smart move on their part, I might add.

Yeah, I'm in SC, and he gets commercials run against him for not being sufficiently conservative. And he just won reelection last year (over a Ron Paul Democrat - our politics are weird) so he's not up til 2014.

1) Apparently it is not Pelosi's style to go ahead unless she is sure

2) I'm guessing health care reform is killed until November but in theory Dems could try again as many times as they want

Ok, I think the chaplain is high.

I hope this passes (even if it weak and lacks a public option) but I'm honestly worried about violence from the right if it does. The Republicans and their far-right media allies have used such apocalyptic and violent rhetoric in their opposition that some people are going to fall for it and hurt somebody...

:(

Please tell me some crazy GOPer is going to speak. A Bachmann or a Gohmert or a Broun.

The only piece of notable legislation I can recall that failed a vote under Pelosi was TARP, which was a highly unusual situation and one that roughly half of both parties refused to vote for.

I've been telling people for ages she's an extremely good speaker. I think it's finally starting to dawn on people.

2010-03-21 01:06:53 PM
"One minute speeches" yea right

She's a fantastic speaker. I came to realize quite a while ago that the opposition to her is mostly just sexism. I know its rather hackneyed to say that, but it's basically true in her case.

Can't wait to hear the GOP rebuttals.

"We... ah... WHARGARBL"

I've never particularly liked him, but it wasn't until I watched him in the Sotomayor confirmation hearings that I began to respect him a little. He ended up voting against her confirmation, but he gave her a fair shake and didn't look like a buffoon in the process. Aside from that, he's been working with Dems on some key issues like cap and trade, immigration, etc. That's how the system is supposed to work.

He was on Meet the Press a few weeks ago with Evan Bayh. Good show.

Did you see the quote from Bachmann about how the Dems are violting God by holding this vote on the Sabbath? That was good stuff.
