I didn't think it was possible, but in Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is not hot. Also, the movie was amazingly boring.

The only thing that really bothered me about AIW was that the chick playing Alice looked like that creepy Palm Pre albino lady.

It's even worse in the Golden Compass. Freaky.

I thought she was hot (both the Palm Pre and Alice, especially when she was going from small to big to tiny to huge.

Maybe its just my odd eyesight, but I thought the 3D in Avatar caused things in the background to blur too much. I'm sure the technique will improve over time, but it really showed in some shots.

I'm sure it's fine. I watched "Willie Wonka" on HBO and liked it too. Creepy, funny, and I laughed my ass off when they had the puppet burn ward at the end. But it's just the same formula, over and over and over again. If it comes my way, I will watch it, but I'm not going out of my way to see it.

I'm taking the daughter to go see "How to Train Your Dragon" next week. Seems like a better use of my time.

No I meant I went and saw Alice. But I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory too. I thought it was creepy fun. I don't always like Burton's works, but his formula does work a lot. I actually can't stand to see The Nightmare Before Christmas or the Corpse Bride, so I don't love everything the man makes.

Depp isn't that great of an actor. He acts kinda drunk in the pirate movies, puts on an accent for the mad hatter... Just big broad acting strokes, sounding funny + moving funny =/= good acting.

I suggest you see Public Enemies. I kept forgetting it was him playing John Dillinger.

It seems to be doing sort of okay at the box office without you. Not sure if you were aware of the effect you're not having.

An animated fantasy story laced to the gills with pop culture references? Why has no one thought of that before.

It's not that the 3d caused the background to blur. It's that Cameron decided to use a limited focus lens (or an computer generated simulation of one) to keep attention on the things he wanted people to watch. You see that in standard films all the time, the background and foreground are out of focus but the point of attention is in focus. Unfortunately when you look at something that is out of focus in a 3d movie it's much more jarring than in 2d.

How is it that a director that has a relationship with the biggest and highest paid actor in hollywood to the point that he can get him to basically work for free a bad thing?

You would if you could.

2010-03-21 01:39:36 PM
Last I checked, a lot of directors like to work with the same versatile actors since it's a lot easier than building a relationship with somebody who is untested in the films they like to make.

Burton - Depp
Scorsese - DiCaprio
Guest - O'Hara, Levy, Willard, Guest
Howard - Hanks
Tarantino - Thurman, Keitel
Costner - Costner

The list goes on and on.

I'm surprised that the 3D thing didn't catch on more with the Beowulf movie.

Granted, they raped the hell out of the original story less than 1/3rd of the way in, but it was still very enjoyable.

I'd like to see Tim Burton and Lady Gaga collaborate on a full-length motion picture remake of The Wizard of Oz.

/It's not that I actually like that movie, or Burton's movies that much, I just think it think it will be trippy as fark.
//Am a fan of Gaga, though. I dig her type of trippy.

It's true that 3-D is being hyped at the moment. It was different when we started working on 'Alice in Wonderland' a few years ago. I'm glad I started using it early on and wasn't forced to shoot a film in 3-D at all costs, because everyone's doing it now.

Yeah, it's a good thing you got your 2D movie turned 3D in post before everyone else did. Way to think ahead, Tim.

2010-03-21 05:10:52 PM
I think the larger point is that Burton is the last person who should be talking about misuse of 3D. I'm sure Cameron had a mini-rant in his money pool when he saw that quote.

To be clear, and as stated by Cameron, the real misuse of 3D is tacking it on at the end of production via post-processing....just like Burton did with Alice.

When people can watch their major sports in 3D at home, this whole "3D fad" argument will fizzle up like a black hole at the LHC.

Not sure about movies, but ABC tried it as a desperate ratings grab once back in the 90s.
