The restaurant was called the Hump. Sounds like whale from the beginning, though if it was at Santa Monica Airport, home of the DC-3, I imagine it was meant to honor the flights of the DC-over the Himalayas.

I think what grieves me is that the douchebags that could write the post below probably still live in luxury in Santa Monica.

After twelve years doing business in Santa Monica, The Hump will be closing its doors effective March 20th, 2010.

The Hump hopes that by closing its doors, it will help bring awareness to the detrimental effect that illegal whaling has on the preservation of our ocean ecosystems and species. Closing the restaurant is a self-imposed punishment on top of the fine that will be meted out by the court. The Owner of The Hump also will be taking additional action to save endangered species.

He wasn't serving whale to save money. He offered whale to people that wanted high priced sushi and he provided them with it. He got caught when one of the folks who he offered whale meat to thought, "isn't that illegal?", and called authorities.

Per a different article, it was identified as such on the menu and by waitstaff, and confirmed by testing.

Two undercover diners requested whale as part of a $600 "chef's choice" meal. The women were working with producers of the Oscar-winning documentary, "The Cove," to videotape the meal.

Court records say they pocketed a sample, and testing confirmed it was Sei whale meat.
