Aargh. I hate this story. Gay girl wants to wear a tux and go to prom with her ladyfriend. OK, that's cool. School douchebags administrators get their panties in a bunch and cancel prom, rather than take this opportunity to educate the student body about tolerance and civil rights. Girl gets ACLU to sue. ACLU will most likely lay the legal smackdown on the school district, and get them to pay a fine. Just where in the hell is this money going to come from? The school district budget, and Mississippi public schools aren't exactly at the forefront of education. So, they're all douches in this story, and the ones who are going to be hurt are the other students, and the local taxpayers because their taxes will go up to offset this lawsuit.

If the school board would have fired the bigots who made the decision, then this wouldn't have happened.

The school board is elected. In my opinion, in a representative democracy, the voters are responsible for the fark ups their representatives make. So, the "taxpayers" in this case, are getting exactly what they deserve for electing idiots to run their schools.

This might be news for you, but even in representative democracies the people running for positions in power might lie about what they'll do in power, they might even do something even when the very people that voted them in protest.

You're exactly right, and you know what, maybe a lesson will therefore be learned and this crap won't happen the next time because the next school administrator who wants to pull this bulls%#% will remember the pain caused by discriminating. The fine is supposed to hurt, if it didn't no one would care. It sucks that students get caught up in it, but the blame falls squarely on the school admins who created this situation.

Caveat Emptor. If you vote a liar into power, then you get what you deserve. It's very trendy for the public to place all the blame on their elected officials for the sad state of things, or "the other guys" for the fault of voting people into power, and on a small personal level, yes, this is probably true. But our system doesn't work that way; Democracy is essentially mob rule. If the mob rules poorly, then you have two choices: Disband the mob, or try to get it to stop being such a dumb ass.

If we want better politicians, we need a better populace. This is my point - we get exactly what we deserve as a society. If we invested more energy into not being such a media addicted collection of nitwits, I'm certain we'd elect better politicians eventually.

I never had any problem with Ellen Degenerate being gay. My issue is her overall lack of talent.

I applaud her desire to assist this young lady who got screwed over by cockknob school admins. But, would she have helped out a gay male teenager?

The really stupid part is that this decision couldn't have been made alone. Someone not only came up with the idea that, well, banning a lesbian couple from prom would be a PR nightmare, so why not just cancel the whole thing? but someone else also agreed and signed off on it. Someone thought that would be better.

I missed this story when it first came around. Did they try to conceal that it was because there were going to be dykes? Did they give some kind of "gas leak" excuse? How did they spin this?

I watched the first couple of seasons but after that it got way too cliche and familiar.

They should just cancel it outright.

why yes, she is"elfish", and i don't find that enticing in anybody, let alone a gal.
loved her in her sitcom about the bookstore...great ensemble cast.
not loving her as interviewer, or host, whatever...i don't watch those host type shows, late night with..., etc.
also, cut the perky volume down a little.
did see her on "idol", and she had very quick response, with a witty comment about a contestants dress(ruffles forever) ..." i almost wore that tonight"....so she has that going for her.

If by "just desserts" you mean "continues to be the #1 show on television and makes hundreds of millions of dollars for the network and the judges while launching new talented performers into superstardom" then yeah, I suppose it got what it deserves.

I'm not saying American Idol is for everyone, but just because some people don't like it doesn't mean it's not one of the most successful television shows in history. It continues to be at the top even after nine seasons, that's amazing. And you know what? The winners, whether you like the music they make or not, are some very talented kids who deserved a shot and made the most of it.
