cretinbob: Sweet. An '86 Lotus Esprit for $16,000

Yeah I was going through the list thinking "my Lotus Esprit won't be there" and then there it was. I spent an inordinate amount of time drooling over pictures of it in Car Driver when I was about 15.

Hey i own one of those cars, the C4 'vette, the damm thing drives me nuts too, it eats one alternator every 6 months or so if driven much at all regular as a swiss watch

fairly fun car though

The DeLorean does not/sort-of does not belong on this list. Why? Someone bought the extra parts and naming rights and they're still making them.

They're starting $57,500.00 brand new. When I say brand-new, I mean a new DeLorean manufactured out of unused parts.

Now, I'm not going to criticize the car, as I do respect it for what it was at the time, but did anyone actually dream about a VW GTI? Seriously? It's a Rabbit - like the ones with the diesel that had trouble making it up a hill... It's what your miserly grandfather owned after he gave up his '62 Beetle...

Seriously, with limited exceptions (Grand National) all cars from '73 through the 80's pretty much sucked. Even the sporty ones where just sporty looking with no balls. That includes my '78 El Camino SS.

eKonk: did anyone actually dream about a VW GTI? Seriously? It's a Rabbit - like the ones with the diesel that had trouble making it up a hill

Some people wanted a car that was fast 0-60MPH and in the quarter mile.
And others wanted a car that was fun to drive on a curvy mountain road.

You can tell by the high list price only being $6k that no one want's or ever has wanted that car.

I've got an '89 Mustang 5.0 in terrible shape myself, it's worth well below "low" on that list. 250k miles what do you expect? Probably the only decently built car on the list though, I'll hit 300k no problem.

I disagree - I had one. It was a kick in the ass to drive and dead nuts reliable. Only downside was with the short gearing it was screaming on the highway, but it didn't seem to mind.

Now what that list isn't telling you is that if you buy the Ferrari you're going to be forking out just as much on maintenance in the first year... I wouldn't shy away from an M3 or Porsche though, but the prices are still too high for me to figure that I ought to spend that much on a car. (probably means that other people recognize that they're desirable as well...)

The Countach would have been OK had it not replaced the lovely Miura with... well... it just ain't pretty. Seriously, Giugiaro must have been on some good drugs in the 70s.

Wasn't Pontiac still selling Super Duty cars after '72? But in general I agree with you. The only mid-late 70's cars worth having were German, unless you count the Datsun Z (and then they f**ked it up with the 300ZX)

the sad thing is that the generic GM A-body chassis was still a capable platform, just the drivetrains sucked and the interiors went all crushed-veloury.

Sorry DrunkenMidnight, Mad Max's coupe was technically a 70's car. The Ford XC Coupe came out in 1977 and '78, if I'm not mistaken. However, that movie affected me so much as a 12 year old, I set my sights on owning an XC hardtop. It's only taken 30 years, but I finally got the car of my dreams....

Nice to see the Grand Nasty on there. Even though they pioneered the technology that brought about ricers. Those were the 1st cars I remember you could modify by changing out computer chips. I remember the talk, chip one and it was faster than a Vette.

You buy it used? Check to see that the brackets are the right ones. Too much tension and bad alignment are the two biggest causes for tearing up an alternator. The pullies should all be in the same plane as each other and the shafts 90 degrees to the belt. The Corvette used the short water pump and I think its alternator bracket has a little step in it to offset it to be in line with the other pulleys.

Actually, it was faster than the Vette stock. Put a chip in it and some other "minor" mods, and you were easily into the 12s. However, say your prayers when you go through the trap at 115-117 MPH. Not a fun experience with the suspension on that car. There is a reason it was limited to 125 MPH.

Do the... pattens (?)... on cars ever expire? I'm surprised that with the obvious interest some people have over older vehicles that some third party company hasn't started building new copies. I mean, a sixties era mustang with zero miles would sell for a lot, right?

Yup. A dream car of mine as well. Nothing I would ever purchase though. From what I hear, the upkeep is horrible, even by exotic car standards. No sense in paying more in upkeep (potentially) than the car itself. I get raped enough by Gillette razors.

2010-03-20 09:03:05 AM
the BMWs are still the hottness. They just are. I'd rock one of the 80s style one now, if it didnt cost me more in maintenance than it would for the car. BMW just designs beautiful cars that are fun to drive. As much as I love muscle cars, they kinda sucked in 80s- too boxy for such big vehicles.
Not an 80s vehicle, but I almost bought a 98 Z3 that made me wanna rub my girly bits on it... but a 2 seater isnt practical as an only car.
Someday, I will own a convertible sports car, AND a motorcycle

Cars don't have patents. Parts do. The reason those 60's era cars sell for a lot is because they are from the 60's. A John Peter "Honus" Wagner baseball card recently sold for over a million bucks. If I go out and get a printing press for a few hundred thousand dollars and print up a shiatload of them I would basically be out a few hundred thousand dollars. Nobody is going to pay anything for one of them.

True, my favorite eighties car was not made in the eighties. In fact, it had nothing to do with the eighties. In fact, it's not a car at all. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I like turtles. Am I in the right thread? Why yes, obviously yes I am.

I was surprised that the Fiero didn't make the list, popular thru out the 80's (when not on fire).

My dad wrecked my 1984 Corvette about 15 years ago. White with red leather. Pretty sweet, really.

I used to be a car guy with several cool cars. Now, nada.

This almost inspires me to get something that is retro/fun/coolish to play around in.

I wouldn't mind getting an old station wagon or hearse and customizing it into a party barge.

Wait. Is it it cool or sad to do that at 38?
