+1 for a great headline

+1 for Ruby Rhod reference

+1 for the flamewar about cigarettes that may or may not happen

-1 because I'm still not going to start smoking because I don't want to smell like ass.

In before thank you for smoking

But can it halt the damage of a cigar burn?

Do I stutter?

One protein, called GM-CSF, appears to control the progress of a common smoker's ailment, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Sadly, GM-CSF promotes brain cancer. The good news is that there is this other protein...

Cool. Now can I grind up the pill and roll it into my smokes to save time?

Lessens emphysema in mice. No mention of lung cancer.

Of course, the news will be, "Smoking No Longer Harmful!!!"

Maybe the ass puts the smell on the poop as it passes through.

This also works other kinds of smoke and not just tobacco smoke, right?

RIGHT???

FTFA:
He cautioned that the results were only short-term, and that they have yet to see if there is long-term benefit for smokers who block GM-CSF. He added that his team's research focused only on COPD, not cancers and other diseases caused by smoking.

Promotes? Strike that. Reverse it.

Inflammation has a purpose. Blocking inflammation has its consequences, too. Especially long term suppression.

Actually, BLOCKING GM-CSF is what TFA is about. So we reduce brain as well as lung cancer.

EVERYBODY WINS!

True that. Then again, when I'm 80 years old and suffering from COPD, I'll be willing to take the risk that I might develop brain cancer if it means that I can breathe well enough to yell at those damned kids on my lawn.

All I want is to pick my own poison. If someone else gets to pick my poison, I reserve the right to do the same.

I chose urushiol for them. A light spray in the air around them.

You win the prize!

Simply interefering with one disease-causing process is not the same as rendering crigarettes safe. Your inflammatory response protects you from infection and cancer. In some cases where the reponse is abnormal, it may be possible to attentuate it without doing even more harm.

In cases where the response is due to an major insult like smoke inhalation, you may create other problems in the long term with a treatment like this. Besides the fact that quitting smoking is a little simpler and cheaper than getting what these mice got in the lungs.

Torrentius: I'd smoke food if I could.

Not the point. It might not be brain cancer, but long term immuno-suppression (20+ years) could and probably would have wide ranging problems. Look at all the problems with other immuno-suppressants. How about 30 mg Prednisone a day for a decade or so?

John Bender: Naked blonde walks into a bar with a poodle under one arm, and a two-foot salami under the other. The bartender says, I guess you won't be needing a drink. Naked lady says...(celing collapses) OH SHIAT!

John Bender: Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place.

Claire Standish: What's your name?
John Bender: What's yours?
Claire Standish: Claire.
John Bender: Claire?
Claire Standish: Claire. It's a family name.
John Bender: Oh, it's a fat girl's name.
Claire Standish: Oh, thank you.
John Bender: You're welcome.
Claire Standish: I'm not fat.
John Bender: Well not at present, but I can see you really pushing maximum density. See I'm not sure if you know this, but there are two kinds of fat people: there's fat people that were born to be fat, and there's fat people that were once thin but became fat... so when you look at 'em you can sorta see that thin person inside. You see, you're gonna get married, you're gonna squeeze out a few puppies and then, uh...

I'm not a smoker, never have been. but I really don't get all the smoker hate from some people. before smoking bans in my area there were already many enterprising establishments that went smoke free to attract customers that don't like smoke smell and such. what's wrong with that solution? if someone wants to cite increased costs to tax payers in addressing health problems I'll go find the stats that show lifetime health care costs for smokers are lower since they die early. until then I'll just [citation needed] myself :p

the hate seems irrational though, really. why should we care if someone makes a conscious decision to potentially harm themselves? if they are adult and informed (who couldn't be these days with all the PSAs) but decide they enjoy smoking enough that it's worth it to them, fine.
