You say that like it's a bad thing.

Jousting* just isn't a southern thing.

*Official state sport.

You mean that they don't want to reject reading and embrace sleeping with relatives?

2010-03-19 09:15:39 AM
Politically it is pretty solidly in the northeastern blue state bloc.

Last I heard we changed it to Lacross like 6 years ago. Which is a shame, because Jousting is awesome to watch.

I had a conversation with a Southern friend about Maryland.

Southerner: "...nothern states like Maryland"
Me: "Hey. We don't claim Marylan, they belong to the South"
Southerner: "Hell no. We don't claim them."
Me: "Well, neither do we"
Both of us: "Then fark 'em"

/not so cool story bro

Despite sharing a border, Maryland and Virginia are almost complete opposites.

Walker: Despite sharing a border, Maryland and Virginia are almost complete opposites.

I'd say Northern VA, the suburbs around Washington, DC, has much more in common with Maryland than with the southern part of Virginia.

/would love to see NoVA/DC/parts of MD join up to form a new state, mostly so us in NoVA can stop subsidizing the rest of the state with our tax revenue.

My folks live in MD, just outside Balto. The interesting thing is that most people in the cities there are VERY much northeastern, but when you get 15 miles out into the country, there are 10x as many lifted trucks and rebel flags as I've ever seen here in Alabama. Lots of variety up there.

/southern living mag still includes Maryland in articles
//also Oklahoma, which is even more questionable

"Some of the new people that come in - not the real, true Annapolitans in particular - but people that have come in are kind of preppy and all," she said.

Xenophobia comes in all shapes and sizes, I guess. "He don't wear jorts like us real citizens" is a new one to me though.

Now I can't make fun of all my Maryland friends for being "Confederate S.O.B.s" anymore. Damn you changing national demographics!!!

Hell, Virginia already split up once in our history becuase of social and political differences. Why not twice? "Real Virginia" can keep those lunatic rednecks.

So you're gonna leave The People's Republic of Charlottesville to fend with the rednecks? Thanks a bunch, asshole.

They have Blacks in Wax in Baltimore. For that coolness alone we want them in the North.

That would be pretty awesome. Then I'd have Senators and a Representative to complain about.

-Fellow Marylander.

I really feel as thought we have more in common with our northern neighbors. Although, i am reminded that we are south of the mason Dixon line every time i see a bunch of guys in the back of a pickup truck.

It happens less and less every year thankfully.

FTA: It's unusual for states to switch regions in the 77-year-old council, which provides a forum for state officials to share ideas. The last time was when Missouri switched from the Midwestern Region to the Southern Region in 1994.

Missouri is considered "Southern"?

The industry of the South!

/Not as funny as it used to be, what with industry all fleeing to non-union southern states...

The only reason we allowed Maryland to be Southern was because the surveyor wanted too much cash to change the Mason-Dixon Line.

Northern VA is pretty much like any suburb anywhere. If you dropped me there and told me it was suburban Chicago, Dallas, or Atlanta, I'd believe you.

Forget the Mason/Dixon. "south" to me is South Carolina and below.

How about this:

Prince George's County, Montgomery County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City secede, form their own state, and leave the rest of us Marylanders alone. Hell, they can have Howard County, too. I'm tired of my tax dollars supporting a broken and corrupt city government that can't get its books in order even with millions in federal and state grants. For that matter, those four jurisdictions have more people than all of the rest of the state combined. If any candidate wants state-wide office, they only need to campaign there. Forget the western part of the state, forget the Eastern shore. They don't count apparently.

/Can't wait until the Eastern Shore secedes

Apart from four years at uni in Lynchburg, VA, I've lived in Maryland all my life. I've always considered Maryland to be neither North nor South but Mid-Atlantic so...

Maryland is the best state. We have mountains, beaches, cities, farms, lots of water, close to everything, great hospitals, great universities, a diverse, wealthy and educated population, history and culture.

Plus, we have Dundalk.

The "bunch of guys in the back of a pickup truck" thing isn't much better north of the Mason Dixon line.

From one group of a-holes to another...whatever. My taxes will still be high, the weather will still suck, the Orioles will still lose, the goverment will still be corrupt, and people will still be murdered daily in Baltimore.

I like MD a lot (especially on paper), but the f*cking traffic basically kills all the good stuff.

/most of my family lives there
//also, too much vinyl siding on homes

Yeah, I'm from the Eastern Shore and this is just going to stir up the racism again here on the shore (a grand wizard of the KKK lives in Rising Sun. note my lack of capitalization or respect for that "title"). There are over 1000 hate groups on the shore, not counting DE or VA (that little sliver they like to forget about south of Pocomoke MD) and every time that issue gets brought up the racist/southern element gets all wonky.

Fark racism, fark the south. w00t the Union!

2010-03-19 12:30:03 PM
The murder rate is right in line with southern states. Maryland is second only to Louisiana and just ahead of Alabama, Missouri and the Carolinas. Of course since they're murdering democrats that makes them progressive.

A common myth among rural citizens is the illusion that they are somehow subsidizing areas with more people making higher salaries and generating both more income tax and more gas tax. Rural areas are always subsidized by their urban/suburban counterparts.

Basically, the last thing your representatives want those areas to do is leave, although you may enjoy it for the spite factor. Maybe that would make it worth it.
