"And now the mink is everybody's cause-celebre in this country, the precious little mink...I guess so. Every time I watch one of these mutual-Omaha wild kingdom shows, the mink is the biggest prick in the entire forest. He's always got some young marsupial pinned down, he's gnawin' his carotid artery...yeah, the mink is a delight, let's sit him next to Grandma, okay?...I mean, how bad could his life be? He's wearing' farkin' mink! And trust me, if the roles were reversed, this little bastard would be wearing your pelt, okay? So when you hit your knees tonight, thank your walking-upright God that it played out the way it did."

Police said they are still searching for those responsible for the break-in at the farm in Frankenfrde, which resulted in the release of 4,000 minks last Sunday evening.

Does anybody know if Minks can "dispose" of a body as well as pigs can? Perhaps the owner already found them and they are now Mink poo.

Looks like this was in Germany. Although, I think you are right about the Brits being one of, if not the loudest group of activists.

I don't think Europe has an ecosystem anymore. Can't recall any National Geographic specials on the wildlife of Germany.

Not really sure what you're on about, the article is about Germany. Were you just throwing that random comment out there for giggles?

It would probably have been actual irony if the minks started to eat other endangered species. This is just asshattery from the tree huggers. Still, as Drew wrote in his book, "Irony is anything you want it to be."

Although I suppose we do have fairly vocal activists. I suspect you hear about them more because it doesn't involve translating the signs, every demo is instantly media friendly and there's a good chance we'll kick of a riot for the fun of it.

Having said that, the Danish are way more hardcore than us.

Environmental disaster, I doubt it very much. Cats and dogs will kill them off soon enough. And cars. For the one guy whose chickens were eaten--OH NOES!! This is a DISASTER!

I'm sure that's what some bored pet owners in Florida thought when releasing their pythons.

4000 released with 2000~ still out and about in what I'm assuming to be a pretty localized area. As a trapper I can tell you that is an insane amount of mink in a small area. You do that with any mammal and they can destroy an area before they get killed off or spread out.

This happens all over the place in the US. I saw one of the little buggers in my back yard a couple of years ago, probably from this (pops) release by the Animal Liberation Front. They'd better keep away from my chickens.

hitlersbrain: I don't think Europe has an ecosystem anymore. Can't recall any National Geographic specials on the wildlife of Germany.

Here's a lecture given by Alan Weisman at the Long Now Foundation in which he describes old-growth forests in Poland.

Even more importantly, there are lots of native bird species left in Europe, and tiny mammals (rats and cats mostly, but also dogs and pigs) have historically been Very Bad News for birds. I could list dozens of bird species that were entirely wiped out by rats carried to islands by trade ships.

Difference being that the pythons are not native to the Everglades, but minks probably live around there anyway. They'll do some damage, but the population will right itself after a while. And the more overpopulated they are, the faster they will die.

I've never heard of minks being endangered.

Don't know. Maybe it would be irony if the minks were killing other animals in cruel and unusual ways, or killing other animals for sport. Or selling drugs, or building meth labs.

2010-03-19 11:09:22 AM
I'm sure they will ferret out the culprits.

2010-03-19 11:09:36 AM
Many marauding minks mindlessly murdering most minor mammals, masticating morbid morsels.

2010-03-19 11:10:53 AM
This never ends well for anyone, even the minks. Without a proper upbringing they lack hunting skills, and most of the ones that aren't recaptured will starve or be run over by cars.

2010-03-19 11:12:47 AM
They were released because being a mink in a fur farm is an unbelievably cruel existence. The activists released them to make a statement and hope that some of them would remain free. Being run over is very preferable to the treatment they recieve in the farms.

2010-03-19 11:13:10 AM
I've been on mink farms and minks are good for coats, mink oil for cosmetics and dog food. That's it ! They are mean little SOBs. When they are shipped via air (alive), the baggage handlers call them "organic pencil sharpeners".

Animal Rights people released about 4000 minks from a farm near me. Some minks were caught, but most died from starvation which is not very humane. Animal Rights people make good road kill !

Eurotrip: Being run over is very preferable to the treatment they recieve in the farms

you mean all the free food they can eat until they are anally electrocuted?

in contrast, life in nature is never easy--there are no old age homes for minks or any other wild animals. they die violently and in pain from accidents, disease, predation or starvation.

I would imagine that you have actual experience as a mink in a farm to back up this claim. Otherwise you might want to consult with a mink to get his perspective.

Eurotrip: They were released because being a mink in a fur farm is an unbelievably cruel existence.

Yes, because everybody knows that treating a fur-bearing animal with "unbelievable cruelty" is necessary to ensure the animals' pelts are thick and luxurious.

cryinoutloud: Environmental disaster, I doubt it very much. Cats and dogs will kill them off soon enough. And cars. For the one guy whose chickens were eaten--OH NOES!! This is a DISASTER!

Dogs, maybe, but the minks will kill almost any cat.
They are savage little bastards.

But we shouldn't be killing them for their fur. Instead, we should surgically paralyze them, then then we could just drape them over our necks or dangle several together to make a coat, and nobody dies.
