So...wait. You're telling me that, for decades, US universities have been allowing GAY couples to room together, but not STRAIGHT couples?

I would certainly hope that the Fark Religious Independents will come along any moment now and welcome this change in university policies in the name of "normal" relationships.

Right, guys?

Mixed gender, mixed species, I don't care.

As long as those smelly Canadians aren't included.

This will go well.

Just wait, you will start to see stories about girls claiming rape by their drunken roommates, UFIA, illicit recording, etc. I do not see this ending well.

This doesn't sound like a good idea and I could care less about any hanky-panky, its the various fallout from when their relationship inevitably sours that's the concern.

Because a chick can never do anything creepy or inappropriate to another chick, nor a dude to another dude.

This is an OUTRAGE! The dorm should be Adam and Steve, just like God intended!

If you allow mixed gender, this will inevitably lead to mixed ages! Why a 40 year old sophomore could room with a 13 year old freshman, and what about multiple roommates? I'm sure the liberal housing director doesn't mind if 4 people share a common address. THEN who is the primary occupant? Mark my words farkers, this is bad for America.

The first multibillion dollar lawsuit for rape will either bankrupt the college or see the end of this fun little experiment.

I remember when I was touring the campus of the school I would eventually go to there was a parent who asked about students of one sex being allowed in the dorms of students of the opposite sex overnight. The guide said, "It used to not be allowed. This campus has a high percentage of gay students, though [it really did], and everyone felt it was unfair that while gay couples are allowed to openly live together [and a bunch did] straight couples weren't allowed to so much spend the night with one another." The parent biatched - actually, she said it was "lame" - and her precious little snowflake did not end up attending my college.
Anyway, while official policy was to only ASSIGN people of the same sex to the same room, in practice couples would usually just pick one or the other's dorm and stay there pretty much all the time - we had suites, so while it was four to a dorm each person had a private sleeping area. Heck, a few of my friends had their townie boyfriends living with them for months at a time. Then again, my school was insanely lax. I knew like three people that had cats. I smoked pot, in my dorm, daily, and I lived directly across from the RA.

/put the 'liberal' in liberal arts college
//400 students, baby. Which is the only way that would work, with the kids policing each other and making sure no rape stuff was going on. The few times a sexual assault did occur there was like, campus wide rage and action against the guy who did it.

"College students are adults".

Hmmm.

But not all of them. It's not safe to play with all of the orcas. It could be a drag to find out that your roomate is fapping on your underwear mid semester. Of course that could happen with lesbians, same problem.

When I was in college the rule was that opposite genders could share apartments and bathrooms but not rooms for sleeping etc.

Rape is already pretty damn common on college campuses. Most girls (and guys, lol) are dumb enough to not realize that they /can't consent/ if they're all nice and boozed up.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I've been trying to get something similar implemented at my school, but reslife is all like EWWW NO COOTIES. The guys I wanted to dorm with are all nerdy virgins that are all pretty uninterested in having sex. Yes, they're heterosexual. However, they're also workaholic engineers.

But no couples allowed.

Slippery slope. Next thing you know same sex people will be living in the same room! Next is the polygamist dorms! We must make a law to prevent this from happening.

I don't understand America sometimes,

Why not give everyone their own room? why make you share? Surely the Universities get enough money to put some walls up?

Just seems kinda...bizarre. It's a place of higher education and learning to be an adult, they should treat you like one.

FTA: "Post gender society"

What is this bull shiat? There is now more scientific evidence than ever that gender is hard-wired into the brain DNA. All the libtard attempts to create a gender-neutral "persun" have failed, because there is no changing the brain. Men are men, women are women, gays are gays, and any blending is just confusion or experimentation that will ultimately lead to 100% straight or gay behavior in the long run.

Damned Lib Arts retards.

We're talking about college, not high school or grade school, right?

So.... Ummmm.... We're talking about 18 year old men and women, right? (of course there are exceptions, don't be a douche)

Why is this an issue?

/Wouldn't have wanted a girl roommate... they have cooties.

Ummmmm...what?

College is where kids either go to a) get drunk and not care about anything in life (grades, job, money), or b) get their Mrs. degree

A lot of Universities receive the majority of their funding from the government and/or grants/funding from private corporations. Since the economy is tanking, things aren't so hot for them (just like everyone else). I've seen a few articles on here where schools are starting to stick 3 to 4 students into 2 student dorms because they want to shut down dormitories to save on spending.

I think it's asinine to have to share a dorm room. It used to be that most people came from homes where they had to share rooms with one or more siblings, but I don't think that's the case now.

I spent a year studying at a university in Germany where everybody had their own room in the dorm, and it was so much better.

There's always that Moment of Weakness Sex.

Her: Lousy Bob. Wouldn't take me to the Sapahannock Dance.
He: He's an idiot. You deserve better. Have a drink.
Her: Sometimes, I think you're the only one who understands me.
He: Your a complex person. You have needs. Have another drink.
Her: You are a wonderful person.
He: Thank you. So are you. Have another drink.
Her: I'm getting so warm. I need to take of these clothes.
He: Well, we're all friends her. Let me help you. Have another drink.

The downside is, now you are stuck in a dorm room with a needy chick who expects you to listen to her and take her to the Sapahannock Dance.

/Once drove 625 miles in an AMC Ambassador 'to be there for her'. By the time I got there, she had forgotten what I had to be there for but I did catch the drunken rage stage of the breakup. Ah youth. How I am glad it only happens once in a life time.

You sound old and out of touch. Have you been to a public university lately? Maybe it's different in the UK, but I went to a private engineering school, and whenever I would visit friends at public colleges, I couldn't help but wonder how they could behave the way they did and expect things to just be grand after graduation.
