As long as it's filmed with 3D in mind, I'm fine with it. I trust Nolan.

they'd better keep releasing 2-D versions, or I'll never be able to get the Missus to the movies again.

F*ck. You.

I think Nolan has enough pull at this point that if 2D he wants, 2D he'll get.

Avatar 3D was annoying at 15 minutes in.

Movies can be made with 3D in mind but not reliant on it. That being said, I think the whole glasses thing is stupid and they should hold out for better technology before committing everything to it.

Sooo......just go watch the 2D version if you don't like 3D.

Only if you live in an area that will show the 2D version. I live in Wyoming and I couldn't find a theater showing the 2D version of Avatar. Yes, they've even converted the theaters in Wyoming to show 3D now.

No theater wants to lose revenue by showing 2D versions of movies being advertised as being in 3D. People want to see the 'bam' 'pow' action popping in their faces and the screen fuzzy on the edges, so they'll take their money to a 3D theater instead, sadly.

/apparently 3D washes out the colors pretty badly, from what I was told
//wanted to go see for myself
///will have to wait for the DVD to check now

3-D gets really tiring after a while since your eyes have to work more than usual. Avatar's plot and dialogue were grueling enough, but after 2 1/2 hours I couldn't wait to get those glasses off.

2010-03-19 06:13:28 AM
Well, so much for my going to another Warner Brothers film.

/car accident when I was 14 left my right eye damaged - 3D doesn't work with damaged eyes

I have no desire for any of this 3d crap.

2010-03-19 06:32:50 AM
I wear glasses. I have bad enough astigmatism in one eye to preclude contacts. 3D glasses over regular prescription glasses sucks rocks.

Guess I won't be watching any Warner Brothers' movies.

Yeah, I know I'm not a big demographic, but it would be nice to see an occasional movie.

/ sucks to be me
// not really, but better 3D tech without glasses would be nice

2010-03-19 06:43:23 AM
Not a big fan of the 3D- Avatar gave me a headache, the focus was never right and fast motion is too blurry, but I did go a guest screening of that new Hobble Kaleidoscope 3D movie at the IMAX and it was amazing.

3D is all about making it more difficult to replicate the theatre experience at home... but it failed last time the trotted it out, and the technology and film making techniques are only marginally better.

I expect this will go away over the next couple of years.

Uhh, no. Any 120Hz or greater TV can display 3D content, or if you've got 9 grand laying around you can buy one of these:

waiting4godot: Are movie theaters charging more for 3D?

Yes.

TwistedFark: I see a lot of lawns in this thread to get off of.

For me, it's not about "NEW = BAD! GRAAAH!" It's that with few exceptions, the current crop of 3d movies are using it as no more than a sales gimmick. It'd be like advertising a movie as one of the first "talkies", and having the soundtrack be nothing but two hours of blaring klaxon. I'm sure there will eventually be some films where the 3d aspect really adds to the narrative and immersion, and makes the film more than the sum of its parts. This crop, sadly, ain't it.

Ahh, yes. Most people do NOT have 9 grand for a TV when they've all spend thousands in the last few years putting in large LCD or plasma TVs plus home theatre, and bought a BluRay player, etc.

Anyway, have you seen any 3D movie torrents yet?

As long as your TV can support HDMI 1.4 and refresh at 120Hz, you don't need to buy a new one. As far as torrents are concerned, just wait until the end of summer or there abouts.

Wait, what? How? Are TVs just naturally able to polarize light? Is this the linearly polarized style where leaning your head screws it up or the "Real3D" stuff that uses circularly polarized light?

It seems odd that a TV could do this normally.

Oops my bad- 120Hz input, not refresh rate.

That I'm not sure- I do know SMPTE is supposed to making a standard. Let me do some research.

Christopher Nolan was able to make use of Imax technology in a highly successful film, and as a result Hollywood has become addicted to it. Other filmmakers took it up a notch with the 3-D stuff, but I don't know what he thinks of that. I know that he isn't big on gimmicky computer techniques (I wonder how much he hesitated before deciding to make Two-Face a partly CG creation), so I doubt that the next Batman film will rely heavily on 3-D. So all you anti-3D Luddites can just chill for now.

/Pretty neutral on 3-D here. I can be persuaded either way on its validity in films

I thought Avatar's 3D was pretty understated, and not really nessesary. But then I think the only other 3D movie I've seen was 'Captain EO' on a trip to Disneyworld back in 1987.

2010-03-19 07:54:06 AM
I would love 3D that was 3D. The half-baked cheesy illusion that people mean when they say 3D is not it.

When you cannot angle your head without losing the 3D effect, you have failed.

I missed about a 5th of the film Avatar because my eyes kept losing focus and integration due to the 3D illusion-- it was a horrible way to watch a great film.

Here- this is a better article and stops the temptation to talk out of my ass =)

3DTV What you don't know (new window)

The big thing is the HDMI 1.4 which will allow a true 120Hz signal (60Hz for each eye it's called Frame sequential display) so, if your new TV doesn't support it, you'll need a new one.

It's neither of those. The glasses get hooked up to the TV so the left and right eyes open and close in sync with the movie.

I'm sure they will release 2D versions as well, you crybabies. As long as they don't use 3D gimmicks like ping pong balls flying at the screen and shiat like that, you won't notice any difference.

That's the issue...NONE of the currently available sets can support 1.4. Even currently available 3-d ready sets from Samsung and Mitsubishi are 1.3.

The new sets are mostly going to be 240hz or 480hz sets, so they can do two side by side 120hz or 240hz images that will sync with the shutters in the IR glasses. Using a altenating frame sequencing technology, the image rapidly changes from the left to right side to create the illusion of depth, the shutters in your 3-D glasses sync with the screen via the IR transmitter in your TV.

So, if you want a full blown home theater system with the best video AND audio, you'll need a new BD player with 3D capability, a new AV receiver with 1.4 to carry 3D and currently available audio formats on BD, and a new 3D TV. Not to mention HDMI 1.4 cables which add a few more conductors to the mix for a ARC (audio return channel) and ethernet. Not to mention the glasses cost about $150-200 per set.

I saw U2 in Imax 3D. Totally amazing visuals.

Avatar.. it was neat I guess, nothing mind blowing. (Movie sucked)

I'd love to watch one of the sporting events they show from time to time in Imax 3D. I think that's where the future is to be able to be in a crowd and feel like you're in the stadium.

Don't worry, they will keep releasing movies in 2D.

I'm surprised so many people had problems with Avatar's 3D-ness. I have pretty poor eyesight and I was able to enjoy it quite handily.

OK, most of the reading I've done, is they want to do 120 Hz in so it would be 60Hz per eye. So, then the 240Hz refresh would be a sped up signal to reduce jitter I assume?
