Sure, but he would have only saved 5 minutes if he took the most direct route(which would be the 110 through downtown[HA!] to the 10 to Santa Monica[where no public rail will dare]). Hurray Los Angeles!

Pretty much this.

If you're commuting from Santa Monica to Dodger Stadium, you deserve everything you get.

The commute from central LA (along the 10) to Westwood was one of the driving factors in quitting my job up there. I could leave the office at 5:30 and drive straight home, arriving at around 6:45 or I could stay there until 6:45 and get home by 7:15. It astonishes me how so many people are still willing to suffer through that.

I live near Dodger Stadium (Glendale) and frequently have to go to the west side. Usually, taking the freeways (5n-134w-101n-405s) it takes me about an hour. Going on the freeways thru la (5s-110s-10w-405n) it takes twice as long. Just thought I'd share that bit of useless info.

If your commute was that bad, I don't understand why you would choose that work/home combination.

My commute (Philly here) is 6 miles and 30 min on a good day. Biking is also 30 min standard. So you can guess which I choose when it's warm.

So what? Anybody who's driven in LA won't be surprised by this.

I had that problem in Charleston SC. Had to be at work at 8, if I left at 7:30 I would arrive at 8:15, if I left at 7:15 I'd get there by 7:30.

So you're suggesting subby that I should jog to anywhere I want to go in LA?

2010-03-19 02:01:42 AM
While the job I work sucks a sack of shiat, I do enjoy being able to walk there in a little under 15 minutes. There is nothing like a short walk to work to start your day with your head clear and your blood moving. It's too bad most people don't have the luxury of very affordable housing with a short walk to the city center.

Commuting in LA would be a double whammy.

Driving in LA sucks, but I still can't believe how stupid most drivers are. I figured that with the notorious traffic in LA, everyone and their mother would try to optimize their route, meaning that eventually all the major throughfares in an area will become more or less equally clogged.

Not so. I don't know about the height of rush hour, but I've been on Santa Monica Boulevard a few times slightly off rush hour, crawling along at 2 inches a minute, when I turned and drove a few blocks south to find Olympic Boulevard nearly empty. Apparently it's worth sitting in standstill traffic on a road just because it was mentioned in a Sheryl Crow song. Or maybe people think if they stray 100 feet off the main road they'll end up being gang-murdered, or something. Sheesh.

2010-03-19 02:36:10 AM
I drove a few hundred thousand miles in San Diego, LA, and Orange Counties. I don't want to drive in any of them again.

Its not an LA thing, its a general traffic rush hour thing. It's the same in Milwaukee. If I leave work at 5:00 I get home at 5:45, and if I leave work at 6:00 I get home at 6:20.

So guess what. I choose to leave at 7 and get home at 7:15.

Same for the mornings, come in an hour or two off rush hour (either earlier or later) and traffic's nonexistant.

More people need to move their hours a little bit. It's stupid to sit in traffic idling your engine when gas is not free.

2010-03-19 03:44:25 AM
This dude is either an enormous pussy or a moran. Even at the heaviest time of day, any seasoned L.A. driver could make that route in 45 minutes.

Sure, but that same drive is an hour in LA and still double most hours of daylight. It takes me 20 minutes to get to Torrance from Los Alamitos at night, 35-45 during daylight hours, and 1hr to 1h15 during rush hour. I can make the rushhour drive in Denver from a southern Denver area suburb to Fort Collins(which is an entirely different metro area 80 miles away) in nearly the same amount of time.

I live, depending on which route, 50 or 56.7 km from work. We have commuter rail, highway and freeway between my house and work.

Times are "each way"...
Train: 1.5 hrs or 3 hours if something breaks -- ie, every other day
Car in rush hour: 1.5 hrs
Car no traffic (always traffic): 35 min
Bicycle: 2 hrs (longer route)
Moped: 55 minutes

Everyone thought I was a retard for riding a moped to work. Not only it the fastest means of transport, but it is also cheaper than a bus pass in running costs (insurance, tires, gasoline, oil, etc). Mix in a little biking and you are in great shape.

Now my commute is 0 min since I switched jobs and work from home. I even have a company car that sits in my driveway taking up space. w00t!

I get up at 0500 so my 22 mile commute to the south bay on the 405 doesn't take me 45+ minutes. If I don't leave by 1500 it'll take me an hour to get home. Tuesdays and Thursdays I have meetings until 1600, so I take the green line instead. Takes almost an hour but only about 10 minutes on the 605. Way less hassle, and my iPhone keeps me entertained for the train ride.

Yes, driving in southern California sucks.
