I can't see how this would help. Presumably the pedo's wouldn't be able to operate in the first place if they weren't capable of gaining the victim's trust.

Also, what the hell is up with that picture? Problems:

1. Isn't age of consent in the UK 16?

2. Aren't the victims supposed to be rape worthy rape?

I don't understand.

Oh lord, will someone take a look at the thing that crash landed itself on the article? It looks like a farking burn victim, bro. Why would you possibly stalk something like that when you have tons of perfectly good dumpsters sitting around in need of some good luvin'?

If he was interested in her... I'm pretty sure she had to have lied too.

That would make for some hilarious false accusations.

Facebook still needs a "dislike" or "hate" button.

2010-03-18 04:12:07 PM
Not sure how the panic button would help at all. If you know it's a pedophile that's one thing. But if you are naive and really think the person on Facebook is interested in you, then you are probably just a situation away from trouble anyway.

Here's a hint, if you are an overweight teenager (M or F) the attracive person you think is interested in you, certainly is but not for the same reason you might think.

It's simply the wolves and the herd.

Gives new meaning to EVERYBODY PANIC!!!

If, in the future, a panic button is installed...I think the Farkworld should all press the panic button at the same time to see their servers light up like a christmas tree...almost as brightly as Blaine was with laser pointers...

Earlier that month, she had been attracted by a picture of a young, bare-chested man that Chapman - calling himself Peter Cartwright - had posted on Facebook.

My question is: What phony picture did she use to lure HIM?

2010-03-18 04:17:00 PM
Facebook says it will not install a "panic button" on its main pages for users to report suspected paedophiles

*whew*

I mean, what's facebook?

2010-03-18 04:17:21 PM
A panic button on every page? This is in the same category as a requiring breath-interlock device for every car: overkill.

Jesus Christ, I hate fat people.

2010-03-18 04:18:30 PM
Since it's the British government asking for it, it'll probably be spelled correctly (as 'paedophile'), subby!

Otherwise Just Fine: I can't see how this would help. Presumably the pedo's wouldn't be able to operate in the first place if they weren't capable of gaining the victim's trust.

I'm guessing they use the shotgun method. For every kid they find who is stupid enough to go through with it, they probably find 99 who aren't that stupid. Many of those 99 will press the button, which would begin procedures that would keep him away from kids, hopefully.

Nobody is against Yelp, and that's misused all the time. I think a creepiness rating would be a great Facebook feature.

2010-03-18 04:20:02 PM
Yeah, because a "report pedophile" button would NEVER get abused on facebook.

2010-03-18 04:20:15 PM
1- If she was lured then that implies she was not in a panic. She was tricked into meeting him and would not have pushed the panic button

2- The vast majority of claims will be people in fights or arguments or trolling. Real predators are probably few and far between and don't really pose a danger except to those they manipulate or fool into willingly meeting up or sending pics/video.

This. The whole allegory about the wolf in Red Riding Hood for example just shows that the most dangerous characters can be clever and charming. It's how they disarm their victims and naive children will be utterly caught off guard. Adults can smell bullsh*t a mile away, teenagers can't.

He said they had gone on to explain that the website was "exploring ways to improve safety", which included adding links to more organisations, including Ceop, Beatbullying, and ProAna on Facebook's reporting pages.

Exploring ≠ instituting.
Sorry.

That would clear this problem right up.

What they really need to do is put a "Report to 4chan" button. Reported pedophiles will be tracked down quickly by people with nothing better to do (Likely faster and more hilariously than the police can), but anyone else will just become a bad meme.

/Not a bad idea now that I think of it.

JohnCarter: But if you are naive and really think the person on Facebook is interested in you, then you are probably just a situation away from trouble anyway.

This.

It wont help since they will just operate under the radar.

And people will either over-use/abuse it resulting in a lot of wasted police investigations and disturbed lives or not use it as they are not sure.

I think this is so sad, and I think the people making fun of this girl are pathetic. She was raped and murdered. For fark's sake, show a bit of decency. She looks like a sweet kid... yeah she was overweight - so what? She was probably more vulnerable if she was insecure. It's not the making fun of her weight that's deplorable, it's the fact that the poor girl had something terrible happen to her. Her life was cut short in a brutal, horrible way you wouldn't wish on anyone. No one deserves to die like that. And then you mock her.

For shame.

If she weren't so homely and socially inept, she wouldn't have had to resort to FB in the first place.
Sad she got killed, but if society in general wasn't so farked up, it wouldn't have happened.
