My grandfather got diagnosed about 3 years ago. Aricept has kept the progression slow, and he still drives.

Yes, we all know it's ill-advised, but could one of you please tell him? In addition to being a sad topic, he's still quite capable of kicking my ass.

The DMV re-uped his license last year.

filth: The DMV re-uped his license last year.

We took the keys away from my grandmother after she thought she was going to drive down to our family house in RI and ended up the wrong way on a highway entrance ramp :(

It's so hard to have to step in when you're losing people you love dearly and take away some of the last pieces of independence they have.

The good thing about Alzheimers is that you can hide your own Easter eggs.

My mom manages a day spa in Windermere (Tiger's shishi neighborhood). There's nice old lady customer with earlyish Alzheimer's. Mom had to narc on her to her husband when one day, after finishing up her visit, went out into the parking lot, got into her car on the passenger side, and just sat there staring out the window blankly for a half an hour.

Which pales in comparison to my aunt who moved here from DC, and told us, "The drivers in Florida are so much nicer. They just wave at you when you drive down the wrong side of the road."

You know you can contact the DMV and advise them. They'll revoke his license.

\\Yeah, it is passive-aggressive, but if it means that ass-kicking and resentment are not directed at you, it might be okay just this once.

So my grandpa goes to the doctor.

The doctor says, "I've got bad news...you have cancer and Alzheimer's."

Grandpa says, "Whew! Well, at least I don't have cancer!"

I work for Alzheimers' Clinic. Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.

I'm starting to forget where my car is parked...especially in big multi-level parking garages. This was not a problem in my 20's and 30's...

Grandma is listening to the news on the radio when she hears that someone is driving the wrong way on the freeway. She worriedly calls Grandpa on his cell to warn him because he is out driving. "There's some nut driving the wrong way on the freeway!" she tells him. In tizzy, he answers, "Actually, there's a whole bunch of them!"

"Not only is driving with early Alzheimer's ill-advised, studies now show it might also be ill-advised as well"

That's insensitive... and funny as hell.

1. Have a loved one contract Alzheimer's
2. Go to church/synagogue
3. See if you can leave without choking someone out of sheer anger

I just recently had to put my grandmother and grandfather into an assisted living facility. He was in late stages of Alzheimer's and she in the beginning (she got lost for 40 hours on the FL highway system...) She was okay with the move, until he passed away this past Christmas. Now she gets angry with me because I wont let her go back to her house, or have her car. Fun.

I just recently had to put my grandfather down. I didn't want to do it, but I wasn't gonna let a panel of government strangers do it for me. He went out quick and I think he would have appreciated that...

I work in a care home for people with Dementia, so I'm really getting a kick...

I had a resident here who was still driving even though he had moderate-severe Alzheimer's. His wife would sit in the passenger seat and give him direction. Like, "press your foot down on the brake pedal..."

Yah. She's in here too now.

When my grandfather's old-timers kicked in fully, he couldn't remember my name, but still remembered the way to the bar...Irish braincells are apparently hardier...
