He does not look like he's pleased with this. I'm guessing someone threw him into the middle of the pool and then used him as a photo opp.

thisispete: That cat does not look like it's having fun - I wonder if it jumped in the pool or was put in there by its owner. Surely the chlorine would irritate its eyes, too.

I've seen cats swim, but only after being flung into the water.

I've had several that would swim all on their own through the years. Usually going after ducks in the pond - never could figure out what they were thinking. Attacking one of those suckers in their natural habitat just seems silly.

That breed always looks like that. Can't remember the name but the big eyes give it a perpetually surprised look.

Lots of cats like water, actually.

My cat LOVES water. He climbs into the shower with me every morning and sits in the bottom of the tub.

My cat likes to sneak into the bathtub and lick up the mildewy, soap scummy water. =S When I get mad and he doesn't move and just gives me that what-did-i-do, guilty look, I start running the water and he's outta there pretty fast. He also likes to drink from the toilet. We call him sewer cat. We try to keep the bathroom door shut, but dammit, that once in a while someone forgets is all it takes.

wandaroo: My dad used to throw our cats into our swimming pool. While we were in it.

And...? When we got my cat it was late summer so the winter blanket was on the pool shortly after. But of course my dad didn't bother to cover up the steps right away. So, cat goes exploring. First step. Dry. Second step. Dry. Never mind testing the third step, just jump. Well, it wasn't so dry under that blanket. He was back outta there so fast. Looked like a drowned rat and that water wasn't exactly warm. He's never been back in the pool.

He couldn't have been tossed in the pool or his ears and the top of his head would have been soaked. It's more likely someone out of the photo took him into the pool and let him go. Unless he really does like water.

The Persian is the divine holy emperor of all cats. There are those who cannot comprehend the impossible geometry of its imperial skull and sacred lotus face. But that's OK, not all primitive humans are capable of such enlightenment.

The calico water lotus captured in these photos is obviously a more evolved being. My own black filth a.k.a the Black Lotus would benefit from such regular baths.

1) Did anyone else initially read that as "taking a dump in the family pool"?

2) Many cats of the Turkish Van breed (longhair, related to the Angora, which is related to the Persian) enjoy swimming...

My Superior Persian loves you and your black filth for 'getting' it.
However, try and put her in water and you get this face and the back of her pimp hand:

I worry when I see articles like this because many pets drown in swimming pools. They may go in for fun (or against their will or by accident) and swim around, but then can't get back out because they can't find stairs or can't climb out over the rim of the pool. They just keep treading water until they tire and go under. It is sad and can be prevented by keeping pets, like small children, away from the water without supervision.

2010-03-18 07:00:12 PM
My sacred black filth would probably sink to the bottom of a swimming pool from the incredible mass and density of its massive canteloupe-sized skull. The being in the article photos obviously has a hollow skull to enable buoyancy, as opposed to the solid bone that mine possesses.
