FTA: Wesley Mission said part of the problem was machine settings allowed pokie addicts to lose up to $1200 an hour on a single machine.

I consider myself a pokie addict, but if I were to lose $1200 in an hour I'd put my right foot down... and then shake it all about, turn around, and well, stop playing. $1200/ hour is a hokey pokie problem.

"Problem gambling is a hidden illness," Mr Lucas said. "It's not like drugs and alcohol where you can see the effects of an addiction."

I've known a few gambling addicts and there is nothing hidden about it. Like drugs or alcohol, there is the lack of money and taking it from whatever source you can find. You lie, cheat or steal. There is shame involved just like drugs or alcohol. Your friends and family know you have a problem. I don't understand where this guy is coming from.

Yes this was back in the day when your life expectancy was 40, and banging a sheep was considered 'good company.' This is just poor addicted white trash.

FYI, "gyp" is a slur against the Romani people. They don't have a very strong lobby, so the same people who would never dream of saying "That bastard jewed me down on the price" or "Those new neighbors sure nigguhd up their house" somehow feel no compunction about using gyp.

Of course, if it is your wont to go about metaphorically slandering Jews and our Afircan-American brothers and sisters, then by all means carry on.

The Mother in Law has gambled away about 80k of her home. The really sad fact about this addiction is that the casinos have a mechanism to attract problem gamblers like her. Every month she get a nice letter from the Casino Queen in East St. Louis offering her $5 and a free meal. All she has to do is show up. For an 86 year old lonely widow that's a great deal. Half of the Casino Queen's clientele is retirees.

Some of the other places really push the offers. One in Tunica sends a friend of the wife's $200 in fun money knowing full well he'll drop that and another thousand. He's lost the house, job and truck but he's due for a really big win. Just don't tell his wife he's gambling. She thinks he's out looking for work (wink wink nudge nudge)

I know enough about casinos that you get points on cards you put into the machine. They usually don't offer much like you said a few dollars back and meals. I have a friend in Colorado who told me they used to offer free hotel rooms when they first opened up years ago without spending a lot of money. Nowadays the freebees are pretty cheap.

I sometimes go to Windover, Nevada to play but haven't been there in several months and don't have a desire to go back soon. I guess if one of my friends wanted to go I might consider it.
