FTFA: "During a routine high-visibility patrol back in early March, they talked with a passenger on the platform at Fareham station. The team clarified the nature of the individual's business, were satisfied with his explanation and the man went on his way."

The spokesperson then thanked Shaw "for his co-operation and understanding of the need to be vigilant in the current environment."

Sounds like the story here is that everyone involved behaved rationally. I didn't think it could actually happen, but wow, there it is.

the British railway system is a complete nightmare generally. Not surprised this sort of thing happens.

I don't know why you morons give up your civil liberties so easily, and not even for something in return...except for more stupidity.

Is this the thread where all the AC/DC fans and hipster douches come to rag on The Killers and Franz Ferdinand?

I don't care how rationally everyone may have acted in the situation. It's still bullshiat. farking "need to be vigilant in the current environment" my ass.

Nah, rational would be not stopping random people for things they have written on a notepad.

Oh, I need to add: What dumbass farking terrorist has a piece of paper with instructions written out on it, in plain sight for everyone to see?! It's becoming increasingly clear that people need common sense by enema.

Not even surprised. My friend's wife got pulled of the DC area Metro and questioned for reading a bioterrorism textbook. She was a biowarfare/bioterrorism master's student at a local university. Ridiculous.

I can't agree. They behaved rationally after the fact. He shouldn't have been bothered to begin with.

"Excuse me, but why are you writing violent phrases on that paper?"
"They're band and song names. I'm a musician."
"Oh, okay. Thanks. You can go now."

OR

"Hey, there's a guy over there writing violent phrases on paper"
"Don't worry about it, it's probably noth..BOOM!

Remember, this happened in a country that had people blow up on public transit not long ago. I think that this is pretty much a sensible precaution.

I thought that The Killers and Franz Ferdinand were douchey hipster bands. Mostly because the only people I know that listen to that crap are hipsters. And douches.

2010-03-17 07:07:43 PM
They should have kicked him off the train for having bad taste in music lol.

Wow. I can ahrdly believe that I was alive in the 1990s, a decade when this news story would have been considered science fiction. And the statements by the security personnel are still without any merit, but somehow the fantasy is lost on both them and the reporter.

WFern:

I agree that the staff freaking out about what this guy wrote on a notepad was extreme and irrational. I think I was referring to the actions of the cops and, more remarkably, the passenger. Cop says "sorry to bother to you, hope you understand." Passenger says, "sure, no worries." And everybody goes about their day. Usually that sort of thing escalates into something ridiculous, followed by an even more ridiculous lawsuit citing emotional distress and other kinds of nonsense.

People just have a tendency to erupt into "This is an outrage!!!" kind of behavior, and it's refreshing to see someone not make a big deal out of a minor misunderstanding.

2010-03-17 07:38:34 PM
How can I turn this minor incident into free publicity for my band?

SithLord: The RIAA patrols trains now?

If it was the RIAA they would have fined him for thinking of the music in his head without paying royalties.

2010-03-17 07:51:11 PM
I like AC/DC and Franz Ferdinand, but I think the Killers are derivative drivel.

No matter how overplayed that "take me out" song is, you have to admit it's a pretty good track.

SithLord: The RIAA patrols trains now?

RIAA and MPAA are on the board drafting ACTA, the UK is also one of the ACTA states. So yes, yes they do patrol the trains in the UK :)

What is that you're typing there? Step this way with the nice officer, please.

I guess it's rational for country where citizens have all the liberty of maximum security prison inmates, which is where we're all heading anyway.

So, what is with all the random bolding in the article?

I am confused. I know it's just for skimming purposes, but it reads like the writer is randomly shouting.

Bunch of Farkin' idiots. Franz Ferdinand is dead! He was killed in 1914 and he most certainly was NOT a musician!

:-D

rvagirl81: Not even surprised. My friend's wife got pulled of the DC area Metro and questioned for reading a bioterrorism textbook. She was a biowarfare/bioterrorism master's student at a local university. Ridiculous.

My friend and I studied for our intro ionizing radiation class by quizzing each other on symptoms of radiation poisoning in a coffeeshop. We hadn't really slept for the previous 24 hours so we got kinda loopy and giddy in the descriptions. On the plus side, for some reason, we got this huge section of the coffeehouse all to ourselves.

What your friend's wife went through was kind ofridiculously pathetically stupid, though. Kind of reminds me when Dubya's folks wanted to halt publication on a paper that some researchers wanted to publish on weaknesses in our water/food supply that could be exploited by terrorists... because you know, no one with malicious intent could POSSIBLY think of those on their own.

Sigh.

/did he have "Anarchy in the UK" on the list?

Not what happen! He was kicked off the train and then questioned. Was he refunded his money? How long did he have to wait for another train? This was more of a imposition then simply asking the guy a question and it was completely unfounded.

2010-03-17 09:25:09 PM
Why and how is what someone is writing in a notepad on a train readily noticed and read by others? HD cameras? Someone standing right next to you and reading it, and you don't tell them to fark off and mind their own business? I don't understand how this even came to police attention.

2010-03-17 09:26:15 PM
Ummm...wow. Now, the article is hardly from the Times or the Telegraph or Guardian, but wow. The July bombings were horrible, as was 9/11 but it's no excuse to turn off the brain.

This makes sense how?

Geez, Britain, your "officials" are PARANOID.

Oooooh! Might be a TERRORIST.
A scary, scary terrorist!

Scardey-cat citizen. Please mister government official, please save me from the TERRORISTS. I'm so, so TERRIFIED!!! I'll give you ANYTHING! Please protect me!!

Government Official: Anything? How about your FREEDOM and PRIVACY? I'd REALLY LOVE to take that away. Since I'm so big and important, it makes me feel MORE big and important when I know these sorts of things.

Scardey-cat citizen. OH yes. That seems fair. Here, you can even frisk me right now. And here's my bank account numbers, and I'll get my medical records and my DNA sample for you! Just make those scary TERRORISTS go away!

Government Official: **DROOL!**
