A spokesman for the Sheriff's office later released a statement defending the launch of the helicopter by saying "As God is my witness, I thought scooters could fly".

All that effort to catch a guy with some failure to appear warrants?
Really?

"riding the red scooter erratically "
is it just me, or does that sound like a frat boy's description of gettin' some on the wrong weekend?

Don't kid yourself. A guy can raise a lot of hell on one of those.
I've had the National Guard coming to assist in chasing me down.

You'd have to add a "brah" at the end of it, but yeah, you're right.

So he got away and ended up in the back of a BMW and then they drove by some cops who noticed him?
Dude, it's called "ducking."

They launched one (actually several) for a white Bronco one time, so I heard

There are some scooters out there with 500cc engines. And larger.
Some of them are reportedly fast as hell. IIRC, there is one by Yamaha that has a zero to sixty time of under 4 seconds and will do a quarter mile in just a hair under 12.
Impressive. Most impressive.

You still won't look cool riding it.

Yeah, but I would never want to ride one. Have a 150cc and that is just fine. Would rather have a motorcycle. Something about having the legs straddling the frame rather than perched precariously on a chair with handle bars that just feels more stable.

For going perfectly straight, it might be ok. The moment you go to take a turn though and don't have enough weight on the front wheel or enough weight centered for balance you are going to hear the song of the sausage creature.
I can't remember the manufacturer, but there is a scooter out there with a 800cc engine. 838 I think. Supposed to have a top speed of 130mph. Looking at a picture of it, I just don't see how it would have any stability past 60mph or so. The rider sits in a cruiser position, leaning back. A good bit of the weight actually sits over and beyond the rear wheel, making it ass heavy. The front end is a big piece of plastic faring. Or maybe fibreglass, I don't know. It boasts of having a 2.9 second zero to sixty.
I'll do all kinds of crazy stuff on a cafe racer. I'll go balls out and risk my neck doing crazy stuff. But I would be deathly afraid to ride a scooter like that at any sort of speed. Just thinking about it makes my urethra pucker up, my cornhole clenches, and I get a cold tingly feeling in my tailbone.
/Once owned a really nice purple Honda motorscooter. 50cc.

I got stopped by the cops on my scooter in Vero, so, blah blah blah.
But actually, I did. 1986, and I was driving my friend over to see some girls at like 2 in the morning one weekend. We were 15, and we made it about 1/2 a mile before we were lit up.
The cop just told us to go home. But in a SCARY voice!
Ok--it wasn't really a scary voice. I was trying to spice up an otherwise boring story...

My scooter pretty much tops out at 60mph. Mostly cuz I never had the balls to push it any farther. Also, I never ride it when the wind is supposed to be anywhere north of 40mph.
Don't want to *suddenly* be in another lane.
