I'm in for the fantastic HOA shenanigans that will be aired in this thread.

lajimi: I once gave one of these idiot rent-a-cops 10 seconds to open the flimsy gate for my FULLY LIT UP ambulance. He didn't, the gate went with me.

That sounds like an awesome story that could use some more details. Also, I would like to subscribe to your ambulance driving course.

Yay! HOA thread.

So she can't get pizza delivered because her husband is out of work and can't pay the HOA fees. Sympathy, I haz none.

I'm not so sure about that.

My cousin lives in a neighbourhood that has a rule preventing you from putting laundry up on clotheslines. Her neighbour, however, once hung up a bunch of fish to dry out in the sun. It wasn't covered by the HOA.

/Apparently it was very stinky.
//Yes, this was in Newfoundland.

For people that chime in with "don't live in a HOA" what you fail to realize is that there are parts of the country like parts of FL and Northern Va where it is literally impossible to buy a house in sometowns that ISN'T part of one HOA or another. Hell many counties REQUIRE them before they'll approve zoning for a new development

Renting in a place with a fairly strong HOA right now. The first two neighbors we met kindly reminded us that there are no kids under age 13 allowed to live in the complex.

I don't have kids, and I don't look pregnant. But all the other ladies that live there are barren old harpies, so...

According to the details in the article the husband has bee unemployed for up to a year. This means that they have not taken up temporary jobs, but have enough savings to budget and not get kicked out of the house entirely.

They do owe those fees since they agreed to them, but the community could work with them better.

I found out the county I live and work in requires all new developments to be part of a home owners' association. That means I must find a preexisting house if I wish to avoid that.

Some one at the apartment complex I plan to temporarily stay at went nuts and rammed all the gates off their mounts. That was a great two weeks of not having to stop and get a stupid access card out of my pocket.

Where are the idiots who said that you shouldn't rely on a government to protect your rights? This is a fine example of where it applies.

We're going to spend the next century overcoming the willingness of communities and individuals in the U.S. to give away rights to HOAs.

/The HOA bonus: you are fiscally responsible for whatever crazy way they wish to blow your money.

I bought a condo knowing I would have to deal with an HOA. The trade off is no yard work or exterior maintenance. Pick your battles people.

Actually, HOA ranks somewhere between "recaulk the toilet" and "clean the gutters" on most people's priority list. Perhaps if the HOA folks didn't act like petty motherfarkers they wouldn't get treated like petty motherfarkers.

Hell, I don't even really get the appeal of "buying" a condo (since in my world, "buying" would actually mean ownership... what condos are is something else altogether)

That's the cool thing about owning a farm.

If I hired someone to harass my guests whenever I was late in paying fees to myself, I can just drive the tractor to the gate, rip it out of the ground with the backhoe, and prop it against the guardhouse so he can't get out and harass them.

They're $1,400 behind which doesn't sound insignificant. She's enjoying the benefits of the HOA that others are paying for.

A lot of HOAs suck but you know what you're getting into. You should, anyway.

I own a condo and of course those have a HOA. That makes sense to me. You are giving up a little freedom for not having to do any exterior maintenance. We're also a small development (16 units) so it's easy to manage.

I do *not* get buying a full house that is still part of a HOA. That makes absolutely no sense to me as you are still responsible for all of your maintenance but have additional regulations to follow. Screw that hell out of that!

TsukasaK: Perhaps if the HOA folks didn't act like petty motherfarkers they wouldn't get treated like petty motherfarkers.

There is no such thing as "in good faith" with them. I paid my dues early this year, via electronic transfer from my bank. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the message that their bank had returned the check to mine. They accepted the next payment and then I saw a late fee notice in the mail. They had changed banks, which evidently they sent out a notice on (my bad). Okay, so they got the second payment early but still wouldn't waive the late fee for the first payment that I sent a month before that, despite records proving it?

Thanks lady, I'm sure you sleep well at night.

I know this, when I get around to buying a house, the words 'Home Owners Association' are a deal breaker. I will never own a house with one of those attached, period. EVER.
