I loved BSG and am really digging "Caprica."

I think a series or mini-series about the first cylon war could be pretty cool...

/I was expecting this to be about following the "toasters" after the BSG finale.

2010-03-17 12:33:07 AM
I guess subby thinks the 70s should have never ended, then?

/or is Dirk Benedict

Caprica is great.

Mentat: Caprica is great.

oh, and THIS. I'm honestly supremely shocked how good it is.

I would like to see a series about the first cylon war.

2010-03-17 12:45:14 AM
This may be an indication that Syfy recognizes that many of Battlestar's core sci-fi fans haven't taken to the more 'grounded' and character-based Caprica. If they want to get back to spaceships and laser fights, it seems that the first Cylon war might be a possible place to start.

Yes, I miss all those laser fights in BSG.

His stuff is about the only thing worth watching on SciFi. Though he runs the risk of turning the concept into the sh*tfest that is the Stargate franchise.

Interesting. Fark's a tough crowd to please. I'm going to have to check it out. Thanks, guys.

Just here to reiterate that Caprica is farking amazing. Very interested to see where they'll take the Tamara Adama angle

2010-03-17 01:11:13 AM
I'm really intrigued by the way they're introducing concepts from BSG that seemed like throwaway concepts at the time, like the virtual world.

2010-03-17 01:12:59 AM
I've only seen the first 4 episodes, but yeah, Caprica is pretty good. I'm surprised how well they tie in the themes from BSG.

And old-school Cylons look badass.

2010-03-17 01:17:59 AM
shiat, with this kind of praise I'm going to have to grab episodes of Caprica right now.

2010-03-17 01:42:41 AM
Confabulat: I'm surprised how well they tie in the themes from BSG.

Even the little things, like naming some random talking head news show 'Rhetoric' makes it all worth watching.

2010-03-17 03:05:37 AM
I will check out Caprica on these recommendations.

I really thought that BSG was good.
But then it went to complete shiat after the rescue from New Caprica.

Basically once we saw the Cylons as an internally divided bunch of hippies, they were no longer scary. Add in the humans doing shiat that just made no sense, and it was stupid.

Then the Bob Dylan cliffhanger with the "ha HA! THESE guys are CYLONS!" coupled with Moore's interview where he admitted it was completely unplanned, they just wanted a shocker to get viewers back when the ratings flagged... I was just plain done.

"33" was probably the best single-episode television show ever. I wish they'd all been done with that same amount of planning and forethought.

2010-03-17 03:07:40 AM
Re: Cylons as hippies -

What I mean is that basically, once the "And they have a plan" in the opening few seconds was patently and obviously not true, the scary menace of the Cylons was over. After that they were just weaksauce.

Damnhippyfreak: Interesting. Fark's a tough crowd to please. I'm going to have to check it out. Thanks, guys.

I never saw the original or new BSG series, but Caprica is great!

I WANT to like Caprica, I really do. I am DVRing and watching the episodes, however I am lukewarm to the show. The pacing and plot are improving steadily, but my real problem is in continuity. RDM pulls a monotheistic sect amongst the Colonies out of his ass and tells us it was there the whole time? One might think that someone, say someone whose mother and sister were killed by them, might have linked the Cylons monotheism with the Soldiers of the One. I watched every BSG episode more than once, never heard that mentioned. There are some clever ideas and interesting plot twists, but I've lost faith in Moore to keep them coherent in the greater scheme without chucking a deux ex machina to deal with his plot gaps.

That episode totally hooked me originally. Just great stuff.

/Maybe this time.

Well, it's good to see the strategy of throwing out obviously trollerific headlines has moved beyond the politics tab into the Showbiz tab. Hurray for Fark, I guess.

/SyFy is still a retarded rebranding

Uh uh. Burned me badly on the end of BSG, not going to get invested in a new Ron Moore Punk'd extravaganza.

Not on your life. And I *loved* that show until the third season. Best show on television I ever saw. What a slide. What a let down.

It was the television equivalent of a failed bum-hole Bonanza.

I should go back and actually watch the entirety of Caprica episodes. I DVR them and then skip to the parts where it involves the Zoe/Cylon & the Virtual World.

That Dirigible is a motherfarker, for sure.

Most of the show was unplanned, on the fly, and it's a miracle they kept the ratings to finish it. That's just the way it goes.

I guess I can forgive a lot since there's not exactly a lot of (any) great sci-fi shows anymore.

Original BSG was the rape product of ABC and the Star Wars hype.

Sounds more like you have a lack of imagination then an issue with being too serious. People can fundamentally change over the course of 50 years. Something like his uncle getting knifed in front of him, might make him say screw this, I am gonna try something else. His uncle getting killed is not implausible given he killed the technicians when stealing the MCP, and Vergis wants to completely destroy Greystone for it.

Also we don't know what caused him to join the military during the first cylon war, whether it was a draft or he volunteered. Irrespective, fighting a war against an enemy that doesn't need to eat or sleep would take its toll and change a person dramatically. Think Vietnam vets who served only a year under draft, but came back as completely different people.

I like Caprica very much a lot. Also, I don't know who else caught it, but the Chuck teaser there at the end Sarah had a "Frak Off" T-Shirt. And then I LOL'ded.

I'm going to guess it will have something to do with his sister.

craprica is crap
even moreso than bsg
it's a series of money shots marginally held together by a thin plot

Don't worry about it. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I'm watching the show, and I'm enjoying it well enough, I guess. But, it's not really doing a lot for me.

2010-03-17 07:25:04 AM
I also agree that Caprica is amazing. I thought it was going to suck (and was thinking I was well on my way to being right during the first ten minutes).

/BSG season 2 was SO GOOD.

2010-03-17 07:25:21 AM
Heh - we were (or I was) wondering yesterday in the Eureka thread when there'd be a Caprica thread. I guess I shouldn't be surprised one shows up with a trolltastic headline.

/Caprica... great story. Compelling, and rich.

I was a huge fan of the series, didn't care much for the finale, but then again, NOTHING they could have done would have made me happy it was ending. Like the finale for Farscape, actually, before The Peacekeeper Wars came out (when they had the "vaporized in a rowboat" ending).

As for Caprica, good show so far. Great writing, again great actors, and a good story that seems to be shaping up.

"Syfy has no real Sci-fi"? Do Eureka and Warehouse 13 just not exist or something?

If there's to be a new spin-off, I want "Kobol".

Flapjack727: "Syfy has no real Sci-fi"? Do Eureka and Warehouse 13 just not exist or something?

This is where someone more diligent than I (which is most of you) would post that 'haters gotta hate' image. Also, I too am quite happy with Caprica. The dancing robot scene was just spooky/fun. Also, I think something showing the 12 Colonies just *after* the Cylon Wars would be quite interesting. Why? I take it the 12 Colonies only became a cohesive political unit to fight the Cylon menace (does one need capitalize "Cylon", BTW?), and I suspect that + all of the post-war technology paranoia would make for a fine story.

2010-03-17 07:52:05 AM
I was hooked on Caprica by the third episode. It's a good show.

Rape, Subby? Really?
The re-imagined series is far, far better than the original, 'camp factor' notwithstanding. Better writing, better directing, better acting, more interesting storylines, and so on.

Hardly rape. The re-imagines series made sweet sweet love to the original, and had to put a bag over her head, turn off the lights, & hold its breath to do it.

I've watched a few episodes of Caprica. I don't get it.. find it kinda annoying

Have to agree. The large gaps between seasons of BS:G was a huge let down, and then season 4 capped it. However, Caprica is off to a great start. We're only a few episodes in, so I don't understand the hate from the impatient folks who want it all spelled out already.

Hm, maybe I'll have to give Caprica a watch then, from its previews and the nerdrage left over from the way BSG stumbled into its end, I was wary about watching Caprica and having my eyes...melt or something.
