"Have you ever snuck your own snacks into the movie theater?"

Does a flask of Stoli count as a snack?

I don't buy popcorn or snacks when I go to a movie, unless a date wants some. I can live for 2 hours without eating. But theaters make their money pretty much on concessions. So if some fat fark wants a barrel of popcorn with a plate of nachos and a gallon of Pepsi on the side, let them pay $30 for it. And Schwarzenegger is in on this? No one ever said, "Hey, Predator was a great cantaloupe movie!".

If I have to go out in public to be raped by a movie theater, I damn sure better get high quality beer, reasonably good sandwiches, fries, and salads, as well as humorous legacy-80s trailers.

Heh... my favorite movie experience ever was going to see "Dawn of the Dead" with my ex, where we split a vicodin and sneaked in thermoses of margaritas. (Do not do this at home, kids). We came out and the hallway in the theatre (mall theatre, I may add) was empty. Nobody was there. We clutched each other in terror, convinced zombies had attacked... Stamford, CT.

That said, most movies I go to, my friends and I bring in some form of alcohol... no need for snacks, just drinks. My husband gets popcorn, but he's the exception. I don't think the man has ever encountered popcorn he could turn down.

I'm so jealous of people who have movie theatres with bars/actual food... I'd probably go to the movies more if we had that around here. I just wait for Netflix where I can cook a good meal and have drinks, etc etc.

I may eventually get my ass to "Alice in Wonderland," though... and "Kick Ass" is a given.

how about instead of making things healthier, they offer smaller portions at a cheaper price.

Because a 3 OZ small for 5.50 and a 2 gallon large for 5.75 is stupid.

I'd like it if there were plates of sliced Pink Lady apples with a huge bowl of caramel apple dip on the side, but I really don't see this happening.

I sneak bottles of beer into the theatre in my sporran, along with things like fine cheese, crystalised pineapple, smoked dried salmon, all manner of things.

I have a pretty large sporran, a handmade custom jobby that is pretty much one of the nicest things I own.

I can take a super sub (about 16 inches long) and with it cut in half, fit both halves into my sporran and have a nice lunch in the theatre for me and the wife. And still have room for a few small treats.

If I'm paying $8 for a pan pizza, the tickets shouldn't cost 10 farking dollars. And what the hell does that have to do with healthiness?

I eat microwaved popcorn every day. The bags are 100 calories each. The stuff wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't in such great quantity, wasn't soaked in butter substitute and loaded with salt.

2010-03-17 12:07:40 AM
I'm pretty sure when people go out to the shows, it is kind of an event and people want to treat themselves. Popcorn that is not buttery is not treating yourself.

Most people aren't "treating themselves", bad food is just their lifestyle. Besides, healthy food is just as delicious and sometimes more delicious than unhealthy food if it's prepared correctly. People have just come to rely on artificial flavors and additives for taste far, far too much.

For me, treating my self is the excursion. I spend six bucks on a matinee ticket. I do not buy movie theatre food. If I did that, I wouldn't have any more money for further excursions for a long, long time.

Make the existing movie theater snacks healthier? No farkin' way!

Add healthy snacks to the list of unhealthy snacks? Hell farkin' yes!

2010-03-17 12:15:45 AM
Uhhh, How about "NO".

Popcorn is the only reason I go to movies. Whenever I get the hankering for some 'corn, off I go to the nearest theater. Granted it's expensive, but I usually get the Free Refills deal, as I am already through a large bag before the Previews end.

So Hell No to healthy at the theater.

By the By, if you still have "Sherlock Holmes" at your local theater, go see it!

Panty Sniffer: I'm pretty sure when people go out to the shows, it is kind of an event and people want to treat themselves. Popcorn that is not buttery is not treating yourself.

Yeah, man. I don't go to movies as often as I used to - I used to go to one or two a week, now I'm lucky if it's one or two a month - but when I do go now, I gotta get a popcorn and a cherry coke. I don't drink soda outside of movie theaters, for the most part, and I don't eat super fatty foods, usually, but it's part of the experience. That's what you do at the movies.

And honestly, who are the people that go to enough movies, and whose movie eating habits are so bad that this is even an issue? It's like trying to make the food at a theme park better. There's just no reason, as it doesn't make up a high enough percentage of a person's food intake to make any sort of difference. You go a movie to relax, unwind, maybe pamper yourself a little. It's a luxury. So yeah, I'll cram my face with sugar water and melted butter and not feel bad about it.

For me, it's about looking at food as nourishment and not entertainment. I love good food as much as the next person but don't think that entertainment should focus around it.

You're right, the movie's treat enough. Boyfriend and I usually hit a movie and then stop by this wine bar we like for a glass of wine and a cheese plate- really good cheese, apples and whole wheat bread. Much better than movie theater popcorn and we're not blindly chowing down for an hour and a half.

It's nice to see that people realize that movie theatres make most of their money on concessions, but still bring their own food and then complain when movie theatre ticket prices increase.

Maybe they should charge cost on the food and have $30 tickets.

2010-03-17 12:19:30 AM
fark that.

One of the big joys of going to a movie, which I only do about 4 times a year, is eating popcorn and pop. I only buy the kids combo, with the really small popcorn, tiny pop and a small candy anyways.

I've got some creamy yellow liquid for your popcorn, and it's non-dairy!

As usual when the topic of nutrition is presented to the public, there is more misinformation than anything useful. Some facts:

1. Canola oil is not a healthy alternative.
2. Butter is healthy. You would be better off if you ate just that and nothing else, but who would want to.
3. Buttered popcorn is not (FTA) "artery clogging."
4. Buttered popcorn would be far better than any of the sugar-based snacks.
5. People who make noisy crunching noises while masticating are annoying, particularly when you just paid that much to see a movie.
6. Cholesterol and natural saturated fats are good for you.

* two-thirds of moviegoers and three-quarters of parents are more likely to buy healthy snacks at theaters if they are offered
* 42 percent of parents said they would buy concessions more often if healthy options were available
* 60 percent of parents said having healthier snacks in theaters would enhance their overall moviegoing experience

Amazing how people will lie, isn't it?

People aren't sneaking in food for the sake of health. They're sneaking it in to get drunk, or to save money.

That's all true. (With the exception of the Canola oil claim- it's also a healthy fat.) But yea, the sugary snacks and the soda are far worse than the popcorn, although I don't trust the artificial butter flavored goop. If it was real butter, I'd be fine with it.

I assume you are referring to the people taking the survey and not the people presenting the findings. People always say they would choose healthier alternatives, but they never do in real life. Fast food chains have been burned on this in the past because of their market research.

I remain highly skeptical that the change in behavior would occur in the percentages shown in that survey if the theaters made menu changes at the snack bar. Of course I can't substantiate that, unless I can dig up some experiments along the same lines.
