2010-03-16 08:00:11 PM
That's some heavy stuff.

2010-03-16 08:00:33 PM

At that moment his roommate, Spec. Albert Godding, walked in. "Where's my firing pin -- I don't have a firing pin!'' Sanders yelled, terrified that he'd misplaced that critical piece and would get in trouble for losing it.

"And how,'' Godding asked gently, "did you discover it was missing?''

When Sanders realized what had happened -- that Godding was worried enough that he'd removed the firing pin -- Sanders broke down in great, wracking sobs.

Sanders then walloped the holy heck out of Godding for leaving him without a functioning weapon in a place where one really ought to have a functioning weapon.

"I don't care what your name is!! STOP PLAYING GOD!!"

Another reason that we need to:

A) Bring these guys (and gals) home much sooner than later.
B) When they get here, throw a HUGE ASS OMFGBBQ for them.
C) Get them all the help they need physically and psychologically, DAMN THE COST!

They've been over there long enough, time for the locals to shed their OWN blood for their country's freedom. We're tired of paying it.

scary & sad. yet all they can talk about on tv, is how Obama is the antichrist, or beck is a turd...

disturbing.

OK, why did he leave his weapon alone long enough for someone to tamper with it in such a way and why didn't have a backup gun handy?

/Was that wrong, should I not have said that?

On daily patrols, soldiers around him were being killed and grievously wounded by improvised roadside bombs. The sweltering August heat and stink of Baghdad were oppressive. He was thousands of miles from home. And he had just learned that his wife -- his lifeline to the sane, normal world -- wanted a divorce.

Classy broad.

FTABut when his four-year enlistment is up in the middle of what is scheduled to be a 12-month combat tour, Sanders is going home -- despite the Army's efforts to convince him to stay.
He has found a new love and is engaged to be married....

Soldiers are a resource to be used. When their maintenance and protection exceeds their cost of replacement, it's no longer financially sensible to maintain or protect them.

If you don't like this attitude, just remember: it's still voluntary to join. Frankly, soldiers who can't hack the stress of warfare and separation from their families shouldn't be soldiers in the first place.

The Missing Pin of Courage...

2010-03-16 08:17:13 PM
Hard to feel sorry for any soldiers in the field, not now anyway. Any soldier who has ended up there recently has joined up in the full knowledge that they might get sent there. Some get through and get their college money - blood money - and that's cool - and some get maimed badly and burned badly and lose limbs. Well, that's their own damn fault.

I think this article leaves a key element out of the story. How long was the firing pin removed from the weapon. One can infer from the article that the pin was out only for a short time (hours) or one can take it that it was removed for several days. The article misses that point completely. I applaud the buddy for taking the initiative and not dismissing his buddy's issues, but he could have possibly put the guy in harms way if they were attacked and he had a non functioning weapon. Article might want to clear that up.

Everything being said...it is time that country start dieing for it's freedoms inside of US men and women. It is drain on money, men and the economy with no foreseeable end. I hope I am wrong but it is turning into a Gilligan's Island strategically. Hell send them to kill the gang lords in Mexico and clean up the border.

They're right about that sweltering heat, my brother was out there last summer in full combat gear when it was 135 degrees. We're out here in southern CA where it regularly breaks 100-110, but he said those extra degrees are excruciating.

Also somehow related, Iraqis think we have air conditioned uniforms and have X-Ray sunglasses (ya rly).

But, but, the other people on fark have talking points saying that they got themselves into that situation. Why should we subsidize health care for them when they chose an unhealthy lifestyle, and a couple of other trollish things they seem to actually believe when they talk to me in person.

Dear farking god, you're an incomprehensible retard. People complain about Stephen Ambrose's writing style (yes, BoB was a book before it was an HBO series), but nobody but nobody ever accused him of just making shiat up. Every anecdote he put forth in the book was confirmed by at least 3 other people, and all from people who hadn't seen or talked to each other in over a decade.

Is it so difficult to believe that people watch out for each other?

Also, on a lighter note: blazemongr can go fark himself. Soldier are resources to be expended - we understood that, and we also understood that we wouldn't be expended without good reason...AND that in return for being expendable, we'd get things like good medical care and psychological care in return. I can only hope you live near a live-fire range so an errant round wipes out your house.

I was screaming "BULLSH*T" when that scene came up. (In addition to all the rest in that movie.) Modifying the firing pin the way he would have to would be obvious to anyone who is halfway educated on guns. A firing pin that doesn't protrude from the bolt face is something that even Stevie Wonder could check. You wouldn't need a caliper to tell the difference.
