NYC is worse. They first told everyone that they could build separate smoking sections, provided they had independent ventilation, and staff was not required to go in them during the normal course of business. Once a bunch of bars spent a pile of money to build them, the state came in and passed a law that trumped it.

Now the new thing is the city is recruiting people who are younger and, well, I guess cooler looking, to get into the smoke easys that have popped up all over, because their inspectors weren't getting in the door.

Michigan's law goes into effect in May, and apparently you can't even smoke outside on a patio if drinks are served there. Oh, and private clubs aren't exempt. Nice.

The owner of the coffeeshop I'm at just asked me a few hours ago if I knew of any way to get around it... pretty much everyone who comes in here smokes cigarettes or hookah. He said he'd stop serving food or make it a membership only place or whatever it took. He's probably going to go out of business, though. Sad.

The upshot has been I've been going to bars a lot more, as have a lot of other non-smokers who couldn't stand the smoke. There have been a few who openly flout the law, but they'll come around when they realize they are losing business. Lots more non-smokers, after all, and they don't die as soon.

I feel bad for the places that were specifically FOR smoking. You'd think that those places would be okay, but noooooo.

Install a huge effing exhaust fan over the 10'x10' area. Or just call the whole place a tobacco shop that just happens to have pool tables available for customers to use while there. Might need to make the sports bar into a small section that is smoke-free... what's the ruling on whether you can drink in a tobacco shop?

Another funny story. There was a tobbaco shop in my town that also happened to sell higher end liquor. So you could go have a nice cigar and a good drink.

Well the law said to be a tobacco shop, X% of your revenue had to come soley from tobacco products. The place got swamped once the smoking ban passed, as it was the only place around you could have a drink and smoke still. Since most people just wanted to be able to light up a few cigs, and didn't really care for higher end cigars, the guy started pulling in a disproportionate amount of money from liquor sales. He then made a rule that you had to buy a cigar or whatever in order to buy a drink, and was still way over. In the end he ended up having to sell his liquor license to be able to stay a cigar shop.

I'm sure that bar owners in NC are really happy that their regulars have been replaced twofold by smug jackasses who pretend to be violent on the internet when in fact they're scared of smoke IRL.

Side story:

A couple of years ago, some friends and I were smoking cigar in a park. (After stopping by a local smoke shop.) We made sure we were far away from everyone, and yet.....

This fat kid who is walking with his dad yells "I have three words for you....NO....STANK....YOU!" Unfortunately, that dad didn't make him apologize, and some day, that kid is going to say that to the wrong people, and get his ass kicked.
