No Oprah?

I loved SOAP... that was an awesome show

I always thought that "Hogan's Heroes" was an interesting concept.

Could you imagine a network today coming out with a comedy show set in a Nazi POW camp?

2010-03-16 10:41:18 AM
Married with Children is one of the best shows ever. The reruns are still funny

2010-03-16 10:57:28 AM
Only South Park! Stan, Cartman, Kyle, Kenny, and the rest of the South Park crew return in a new controversial season beginning March 17.

While I don't disagree with the list, it smells of someone at Comedy Central throwing the author of TFA $50 to write it as a roundabout way to promote South Park

why on Earth is Til Death still on? I thought they canceled it a while ago, yet it's still on Sundays.

TFA All in the Family featured one of the most ignorant and bigoted characters in television history - Archie Bunker. His conservative outlook on the world and prejudice views made him one of the most hated and lovable characters ever. The show dealt with topics unsuitable for network TV at the time like homosexuality, rape, and miscarriage. It also included language rarely heard on TV like racial slurs directed at Hispanics, Blacks, and Chinese people. Most of the words coming from Archie himself.

Sounds like somebody doesn't understand the concept of satirical political commentary.

Soap and All In The Family were two of the best shows of all time and would never see the light of day today.

R.A.Danny: Soap and All In The Family were two of the best shows of all time and would never see the light of day today.

Does soap actually hold up? Or is it kind of dated like AitF?

I am continually amazed how it ever got greenlit.

But some of these shows aren't what I'd call offensive. Archie was the butt of the joke. All In the Family made fun of racism and intolerance - by design. Same with Soap. And to a lesser degree, In Living Color (since it was skit based, but some skits were satirizing the intolerant).

Now, for a truly offensive show, I'd look to The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer.

It only holds up if you consider racism, gays, infidelity, insanity, satan, and slutty sisters to be timely topics.

And alien replicants. Can't forget them.

It's all coming back now. What a great show.

I don't understand why it's not on TV Land by now. Crap, Roseanne is on TV Land.

Apparently, this is only for American television. Otherwise, Heil Honey I'm Home would have made the list.

R.A.Danny: racism, gays, infidelity, insanity, satan, and slutty sisters

That show would only get aired by AMC or VH1 these days.

How quickly we forget. What about Robert Morton Downey Jr? (new window)

Soap was my favorite show growing up as a kid. Loved Bert!

Did we ever find out what happened after the execution scene?

The author's confusion of it's and its offended me more than the shows in the article...

ozone: Sounds like somebody doesn't understand the concept of satirical political commentary.

This. Most of those shows are satire. Springer I can - and did - take offense to, because of its shameless pandering and encouragement of human behavior that I'd prefer to nuke from orbit. It's not the subject matter, it's the incredible stupidity that it glorifies that bothers me.

Jackass and Married... With Children have at least some self-awareness to them, but are not done cleverly enough to qualify as satire and do nothing to enlighten their target audiences. They ultimately end up promoting their respective brands of idiocy rather than skewering them.

The rest, though, are explicitly satirical. If you're offended by them, it's because you're not getting it. Or you are getting it, but you subscribe to the ignorance that's being lampooned.

THIS. Something about it just felt so forced.

Paris1127: The author's confusion of it's and its offended me more than the shows in the article...

...And a side order of THAT.

Paris1127: I've seen only some of those shows, but of the one's I've seen and from what I read in the descriptions, none of those are offensive to me. The author's confusion of it's and its offended me more...

this is some new use of the word offensive

clearly the offensive line in these shows allowed way too many sacks.
I came for sports and they gave me satire.

I am offended!!

It's like 'Allo Allo!. Can you imagine a network today coming out with a comedy about a cowardly Frenchman collaborating with Nazis and helping the resistance only when threatened?

2010-03-16 12:56:02 PM
worse:
the author is a comedian.
he probably thinks what he wrote was funny.

this is his top 10 list of shows he liked(s)

2010-03-16 01:03:29 PM
Offensive to who?

You know what's offensive to me?
-Current tv making the husband a dumbass jerk who can't do anything right.
-Placating the minority audience with the "colored" sidekick who never does anything wrong (outside of his crazy wife running him ragged) that could be taken as an offense by some self-interest group.
-Watering down jokes so you don't offend anyone, ever..
-Law and Order (I think one of their versions) never having a black criminal.. because that might hurt someones feelings.
-and network tv in general being complete phonies.

Diogenes: Now, for a truly offensive show, I'd look to The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer.

Also, "Homeboys in Outer Space" upn (new window)

/Don't know what the hell UPN was thinking when they first started out. Two truly offensive shows--3 if you count "Voyager".

2010-03-16 01:27:40 PM
No Mary Hartmann, Mary Hartmann?

2010-03-16 01:28:48 PM
What's offensive to me is the "reality" show "Undercover Boss".

Anyone who actually works for a living and who has seen it should understand what I'm talking about.

2010-03-16 01:36:49 PM
George Jefferson was a lot more racist than Archie Bunker.

2010-03-16 01:38:50 PM
If there's no 'Brass Eye' on the list, then it's not the right list.

2010-03-16 01:43:36 PM
No Bachelor, Bachelorette, Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, The Swan, etc.? I find every one of those shows more offensive than anything on this list.

Sybarite: No Bachelor, Bachelorette, Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, The Swan, etc.? I find every one of those shows more offensive than anything on this list.

I found the exception in "Promiscuous Idiots Island".

2010-03-16 02:48:29 PM
No "Heil Honey, I'm Home"?

Some of the may be offensive (SOAP?) but I find most of the shows on this list funny and/or good.

2010-03-16 03:07:18 PM
Seriously? No Boondocks?

2010-03-16 03:15:16 PM
No Firefly?
No Arrested Development?

/kneejerk post

having worked on the final season of Til Death, I'm getting a kick out of Subby's headline.

2010-03-16 03:21:24 PM
I'm very surprised to not see It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia on that list. The main characters are the most amoral assholes on television.

2010-03-16 03:24:56 PM
You.... are NOT the father!

Mr. Chainsaw: I'm very surprised to not see It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia on that list. The main characters are the most amoral assholes on television.

Came here to say this. I'm guessing it doesn't have enough exposure yet to qualify.

/love that show

2010-03-16 03:27:27 PM
Maury Povich? Ricky Lake? Sally Jesse Raphael?

I honestly don't know how any of them manage to sleep at night.

2010-03-16 03:27:56 PM
Diogenes: Now, for a truly offensive show, I'd look to The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer.

The most offensive thing about that show was that it was an uncredited and blatent copy of "Blackadder III" set during the Lincoln Administration rather than the Regency of George IV.

2010-03-16 03:28:41 PM
FTFA:

The Anti-Defamation League complained about a segment in one episode where Borat goes to a bar in Tucson, Arizona and urges the crowd to sing a song about throwing Jews down a well.

....so my country can be free!

Mr. Chainsaw: I'm very surprised to not see It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia on that list. The main characters are the most amoral assholes on television.

And they always get what's coming to them. They certainly do not benefit from their amorality.

No Fark TV?

2010-03-16 03:31:11 PM
Tatsuma: If there's no 'Brass Eye' on the list, then it's not the right list.

UK shows almost never make these kinds of lists.

2010-03-16 03:31:15 PM
I expected to be yet another list of shows that I never watched, since I hardly watch anything at all anymore. 3 that I liked, and 3 others that I watched on occasion. My memories of All in the Family are too faint.

I never watched Jackass, the Ali-G Show, Jerry Springer, or Family Guy.

A friend of mine has a German mom, and he used to tease her and ask if his relatives back in the old country were as stupid as the ones on that show.

2010-03-16 03:33:05 PM
When I was in 4th grade the teacher made us write letters protesting a show called "Apple's Way". I had not watched the show, nor as far as I could tell had any of the other students. but write protest letters we did. The teach got fired a couple of weeks later, probably because someone told their parents. I think the show lasted 2-3 episodes before being cancelled

I_Am_Weasel: No Mary Hartmann, Mary Hartmann?

Waxy yellow buildup offends me.
