Not an easy feat at all to deadstick land a Lancair IV-P; as private planes go, it has a high landing speed and poor glide characteristics. Deadstick landing a IV-P with no prop and oil all over the windshield so you can't really see is pretty phenomenal. It'd be a hell of a flying story if it weren't for the whole killing an innocent father of two in the process part.

Reminds me of the time a plane made an emergency landing onto GA 400, which if you are not familiar with Atlanta is a major arterial road. Emergency landing. During rush hour in the afternoon. Killed someone on the ground there, too.

I don't think I'd mind going out like this. It certainly beats being in decline for months or even years. Certainly feel for the people he left behind, though. I suppose it's harder on them when it's so sudden and unexpected.

If you wear an ipod and tune out the rest of the world, you have to accept the risk that something like this will happen. You dont see deaf people getting hit by planes on the beach. They know better.

FTFA: HILTON HEAD, S.C. - A 38-year-old father of two was jogging and listening to his iPod when he was hit from behind and killed by a small plane making an emergency landing on the beach, officials said Tuesday.

This is one of those stories that makes me believe that when your number is up, it's up. Apparently, it was this guy's time to go.

In another article it was mentioned that the pilot was having engine trouble for an hour before this landing. If so, he's a dumbass for not trying to land at the nearest airport.

Anyways, this is not a turbine Lancair as the article states. Just a piston IV-P.

I initially thought that could have been the culprit, but with a small plane gliding towards you on our typically windy SC beaches, from behind no less... well it isn't like these planes have horns to honk.

This is one of the reasons I don't run outside with an ipod. You can't hear a plane coming down onto you from behind. Also, you can't really hear traffic coming either.

/nature makes its own music with birds chirping and the wind blowing, etc.

ATC instructed him to land at Hilton Head when he was having trouble. That's where he was heading when the prop fell off, leaving him even fewer options.

I'm inclined to agree with with. Much like the pilot who dropped her plane on GA400; "let's see. I could put it in the trees, but that might be more dangerous for me. Oh! Look! A road filled with cars! Perfect!"

It just so happens that your beach here is only MOSTLY deserted. There's a big difference between mostly deserted and all deserted. Mostly deserted is slightly occupied.
