Ugg Australia, who make the designer version of the boots, told The Daily Mirror that their boots are "comfort" rather than "performance footwear" and consumers should be aware of "knockoffs" which lack reinforced heels or insoles in their boots.

Ugg Australia should know that the "knock-offs" are not knock offs, just cheaper versions of a generic product.

But people who wear them outside and aren't surfers are dumb. uggboots are for around the house, or maybe on the beach, not walking around town.

I see boots similar to these worn by girls here in Florida. What possesses them to do this is beyond me.

Um... what? I would say you must be thinking of Crocs, but there's a giant picture of Uggs right in the beginning of the article that you apparently read, since you quoted it.

So what the hell are you talking about?

I wouldn't consider myself a footwear scholar so I can't say with any certainty, but I'm pretty sure that it was surfers who popularized the things. At least here in the US.

No, Uggs are from the same family of way-too-casual footwear as Crocs.

I'm not doubting you, exactly, just incredulous at this concept.

In all fairness, ugg boots probably aren't nearly as bad as all those women who went under the knife to make their feet fit into a pair of Manolo Blahniks a few years back.

Apparently it's apre-surfwear to keep your feet warm or something.

What the hell do I know about surfing? I'm from Chicago. But I know ugly shoes in inappropriate settings when I see 'em.

I know this is going to make me sound gay, but seeing a girl wearing Uggs or Crocs is an instant turn-off for me. I just cannot stand any woman who wears those. I forget if they're not wearing them anymore, but I just cannot stand those ugly things. Those things just offend all standards of decency and you should be ashamed if you've ever worn them.

How are they any worse for you than walking barefoot? Are the feet that God created no longer acceptable to walk on?

Not gay at all. My experiences are that those that wear them have a certain personality that i find incredibly unattractive.

Basically, North Queensland boguns, but i digress...

How are they any worse for you than walking barefoot? Are the feet that God created no longer acceptable to walk on?

a) nice troll.
b) they're significantly worse than walking barefoot. when you're barefoot, you have very good proprioceptive feedback, which allows your muscles to work quickly providing stability and control. When you're wearing sloppy thick shoes like uggs, there is a "delay" in the forces your feet see, and your entire feedback system suffers. Typically with a normal running-type shoe, this isn't too much of a problem (although the barefoot crowd would argue otherwise, and they maybe potentially might have somewhat of a point) because the 'delay' is consistently offset from what you'd see barefoot, and your body quickly learns to adapt to the new loading conditions. With a shoe like uggs, each step is different, so in order to keep a constant lower extremity effective stiffness, your feet and knees have to do some funky shiat, which can result in overuse injuries.

c) osteopaths are farking quacks.

If the support is in the wrong place it can be much worse than not wearing any shoes at all.

Ugg boots being an ugly fashion fad aside, I hate being cold more than anything. I live in the UK, and the past four months have been almost unbearably cold for me, so I basically live in my Ugg boots.

It worries me that they're damaging to physical health, but I don't think anything else will ever keep me as warm as they do. Unless I finally make my centrally-heated bodysuit. So in their defense, some people really do wear them to stay warm rather than to look cool. I don't think they're especially cool - they look pretty scruffy.

You can still get heavily lined snow boots, and they fit much better.

I like them. Sorry.
I also like crocs, so what do I know.

2010-03-16 08:13:04 AM
I don't wear them in public, but my Ugg boot knockoffs are my favorite footwear in my woodshop. They're comfortable like slippers, and with pant legs outside the boot (not tucked in like the Nancy boy in the photo above) they keep the sawdust and wood chips out of my socks better than lace-up work boots. I'm a woodturner and it's not unusual for me to make -- and have to stand in -- a few bushels of shavings in a day.

This is the third time these things have come back around to being popular in my lifetime. (I know. I'm old) The first time they faded in popularity pretty quickly once it was discovered that when worn without thick, wicking socks, one quickly develops an acute case of stink-foot. (Can you rinse it off? Do you suppose?) There's a lot of things I don't understand. Why women do things like this to themselves is right at the top of the list.

2010-03-16 08:15:34 AM
Here's my issue with the things:

My goddaughter (14) wears the damn things constantly. Srsly, never takes them off. She also damn near sprained her eyeballs rolling them at me when I asked her where her socks were one morning. I guess socks are out with these things?

So if you never wear socks and never take them off, are they not the most toxically smelly containers of foot germs evar?? Ewwwwww!

Also, my mother went so far as to haul my butt to the podiatrist when young me wanted my first pair of clogs (off my lawn) to tell me how they would CRIPPLE me FOR LIFE!! (They didn't. HA! Mom, take that!)

Converse, Chuck Taylor's or whatever don't have support either, but at least they don't look like you stole your shoes from an Eskimo.

There are plenty of companies who make better looking boots that are warmer than uggs. And since you live in the UK, ones that hold up to things like rain.

B sounds like a lot of made up bullshiat. I'm too lazy to google so do you have any citations for this? Since we've had feet for the duration of species evolution I expect there should be a few case studies around somewhere.

jaylectricity: How are they any worse for you than walking barefoot? Are the feet that God created no longer acceptable to walk on?

They are worse than bare feet because bare feet don't slide around while you're walking. And they are uglier than bare feet. Essentially, they are slippers - fine for slopping around the house but not meant for street-wear.

Several years ago, just as the Ugg craze began, I spent a week at a resort on the west coast of Mexico.

I kept noticing a particular young lady around the pool and at the beach. She wore Ugg boots (the first I'd seen in public, really) and a rather small leopard-print bikini. And she had that straight, unkempt, blonde-black streaky hairstyle popular at the time.

She looked like a complete, utter nasty skank. A vile thing. And I wanted her so badly it made me ache. Even now.
