Looks like the university may need a new mascot.

Is there an animal called the "usedtowin?"

Hey, if we can still have a grizzly bear on our state flag here in California (and if University of California's mascot can be the "Bears" with a grizzly bear logo), even though the last one in the state was shot 100 years ago, Michigan can keep the "Wolverines" mascot. (We do still have plenty of black bears in California, but grizzlies have been extinct in the state forever).

In other news, there was a story last week about a wolverine being found in the wild in California, even though they were thought to be extinct in the state for the last 100 years. But there appears to be only one, oddly enough, with no mate and no family members. Nobody can figure out where the hell it came from, since the nearest other place where wolverines are known to exist in the wild is in the mountains of Idaho, several hundred miles away with lots of desert in between.

University of Michigan would be quick to point out that they do not have a mascot. They would be pedantic about it, too.

28 pounds?!? I always thought wolverines where little critters, around the size of a housecat and very lean. Maybe 6-8 pounds tops*. What do I know, not much I guess.

This is the most disappointing thing about the US. There's just been too long a history of not caring about wildlife or nature except as how it can benefit someone financially.

You've wrecked the environment for so much of your unique wildlife, and now that they're gone you come up here to hunt the bears and other large predators.

It's sad.

Michigan's only known wild wolverine found dead

Associated Press - March 15, 2010 2:14 PM ET

MINDEN, Mich. (AP) - The Wolverine State has lost its only known wild wolverine.

The body of the 28-pound female was found Saturday along a trail in Michigan's Thumb. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment is investigating the cause of death.

The fierce hunters found mainly in northern woods and tundra gave their nickname to the state and to the University of Michigan's sports teams. There were no known sightings in the wild from the early 1800s until 2004.

That year, coyote hunters spotted a wolverine near Ubly, about 90 miles north of Detroit. Naturalists have followed it since then.

The Bay City Times and the Detroit Free Press say hikers found the body in the Minden City State Game Area, about seven miles southwest of Minden.

Why don't they just shoot a bunch from somewhere else full of tranquilizer darts and reintroduce them?

Canada has many wolverines, I'm sure we can spare a dozen or so.

The California one murdered this one in a jealous rage, went mad with grief, and now spends his days wandering America and farking trees. obvious.

They're hardcore.

And for the record, folks, Wiki says that the Detroit Zoo has wolverines and had two born there in captivity. Although I sure as hell don't remember them being there, but aside from a couple of 5Ks I haven't been to the zoo recently either. This was just the only one we had show up in the wild for a couple of hundred years IIRC.

Better that than a tree, anyhow, amiright?
