Zulgaines: Women have the right to make me a sammich.

Unless the sammich is prohibited by religious law.

People who want to live in a Theocracy will find ways to accomplish that goal.

2010-03-15 01:56:23 PM
This is exactly why we Americans need to pull out of the Middle East and start suppressing our own damn women.

2010-03-15 01:56:52 PM
Well, Saddam was a moderate by Middle East standards.

Anyone have a Saddam Hussein "Miss me Yet" pic?

FTFA: Women in Iraq bear double burden, feel less secure or free following US-led invasion.

By Abdu Rahman and Dahr Jamail

Not written by U.S. Americans... no wonder they're wrong.

FTFA: Under Saddam Hussein, women in government got a year's maternity leave; that is now cut to six months.

Oh the horror!

2010-03-15 01:58:38 PM
Okay...enough whinging already. You can have a do-over.

Gay folks have it rougher than ever as well. Saddam was no friend to them, but now that he's gone, the religious militias have taken to hunting down and killing them in large numbers.

NPR had a rather terrifying segment about how they'll troll gay dating or hookup sites, meet with a homosexual, then torture them to death.

Is Iraq really so unstable that women nationwide are in constant fear of abduction? I would have believed this article in 2006 or 2007, but I actually thought that the rule of law has been mostly restored. There's no doubt that women's rights have deteriorated now that the Shi'a fundies are running things, but I thought that Iraq's internal stability was relatively decent now.

2010-03-15 02:00:18 PM
Oh, come on. It's not like they're talking about real people here. It's just women. You know, penis warmers.

/Yes, that's sarcasm.

Secular authoritarian* > Religious democracy

Anytime, everytime.

*authoritarian, not totalitarian. Bascially, any power-hungry dictator is better than a rabid idealogue.

I seem to recall quite a few people warning that this would happen before the invasion of Iraq.

What was the calm, reasoned, rational response at the time?

Oh yes, it was "Shut up, you America-hating liberal dictator-loving scum!"

Maybe we should have learned something from the failures of the British, or the French, or the Romans or the Mongols, or the Ottomans, or the Egyptians...

We meddle. People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right.

"More men are now under the weight of detention, so now women bear the entire burden of the family and are obliged to provide full support to the families and children. At the same time women do not have freedom of movement because of the deteriorated security conditions and because of abductions of women and children by criminal gangs."

Welcome to creation of a Ghetto state, 101. Don't worry sweetie. The people who destroyed your land and created these conditions will be blaming your grandchildren and great-grandchildren for being stuck in a circle of poverty. Hope you got bootstraps.

The real mission of Dick Cheney and his cronies amassing insane wealth was accomplished.

If you think the invasion had anything to do with "Freedom" you are a complete fool.

It's easier when you've invaded and toppled the secular government with no plans for what comes next.

Just the fact that, in a land that's been inhabited for 10,000 years, basic human rights are referred to as "western" speaks volumes.

Tell this to the those and the families of those who were tortured and executed under Saddam. Tell them that things were better before.
