It's so early in the morning to deal with music snobbery...

The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is dead to me now. The Baby Boomers have officially sold out everything they once held dear.

Abba performed "Eagle," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and "I'm a Marionette." Those three songs alone are enough to make me like them a lot and see no problem with them in the HoF.

Does anyone outside of the music biz even care about the HoF?

2010-03-15 09:33:24 AM
I don't have a problem with the RRHOF including pop acts as much as I have a problem with the way they exclude things that definitely fall under the umbrella of rock and roll. First and foremost is the exclusion of acts like Rush, Kiss, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Yes, and the like.

Second is the exhibits themselves. I thought both the Elvis and Beatles exhibits in the permanent collection were pretty skimpy. I know this isn't the only place to see their memorabilia (especially for Elvis), but when the centerpiece of the Elvis collection is a purple 70's era Lincoln, and the Beatles exhibit includes recent vintage beatles figure from the gift shop with the price stickers still on the boxes, something is wrong. There are great items in the Rolling Stones section. I guess I expected more. Other exhibits (especially the technology exhibits upstairs, are top notch.

Are they famous? - Yes!
Are they Rock and Roll? - I guess so, maybe, look there is no Disco Hall of Fame.

I would say they belong.

Not a shred of rock & roll in any of it. None. I defy anyone to name one rock & roll ABBA song. Takes more than a 4/4 signature.

Of course, it doesn't matter and no one gives a good God damn, but that's another issue.

+1 for the headline, subby. You're as good at analogies as a guy who doesn't suck at analogies.

ABBA made some of the best pop in the 1970s, this is beyond argument.

They sold a LOT of records and still are one of the most successful bands of all time.

I think the reason that Deep Purple won't get in is that it's basically Richie Blackmore and a revolving door of musicians.

So your contention is that pop = rock & roll, and that sales prove "greatness"?

Because I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly laugh at that theory.

madmann: So your contention is that pop = rock & roll, and that sales prove "greatness"?

There is no 'pop' museum hall of fame. Like it or not, yes, sales DOES equal greatness.

I believe they nominate specific line-ups of groups. (i.e. Cale-er Velvet Underground is in, but the lineup with Doug Yule is not, IIRC)

King Crimson gets in under the "early influences" category? They sold Tony Banks his first Mellotron.

Yeah......no.

There's a reward system already for being atop the "pop" crapheap. It's called the sales charts. If that were the only metric, there would be ABSOLUTELY no reason for an HoF. And nothing but Tiffany, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, Right Said Fred, Britney Spears & the Jonas Brothers, as far as the eye can see.

So there's no Pop HoF, does that mean we should nominate Tim Berners-Lee to the Rock & Roll HoF just because there's no "Inventing the WWW HoF"?

/Undeserved nomination is undeserved.

ABBA? Seriously, ABBA?

I don't mind well done frothy pop and they have had some fun songs but 'rock' they are not.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has sunk to a new low in its' search for relevence and higher ratings.

COOL! When does Brittney Spears get in?

2010-03-15 11:14:17 AM
I like ABBA, and I doubt many of the people bashing them have what it takes to appreciate them, but they do look a bit odd in the Rock n' Roll HOF. Then again, a lot of acts already in there don't really fit.

Face it, the place is the Popular Music Hall of Fame.

No, the girls loved ABBA, and you improved your chances of scoring by playing it.

Earplugs, or a good gag reflex control helped

Get off my lawn. That's where the burnt disco albums are buried

Rock and Roll ended around the time Elvis entered the Army. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would be pretty skimpy with 4-5 years of material.

No, nominating ABBA for the abstract concept of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is like saying your favorite appetizer was Crème brûlée.

Because ABBA, while featuring masterfully written, arranged and performed pop songs, has fark all to do with Rock n' Roll.

Then again, the reality of the RRHOF has fark-all to do with Rock n' Roll.

2010-03-15 01:49:26 PM
ABBA ROCKS !

Actually, they had a good run in the late seventies. They were breaking Beatles sales records and were on the radio playlists consistently. And seriously, Foghat? C'mon.

2010-03-15 02:14:28 PM
I think they do belong there. There is nothing less Rock n Roll than the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame itself.

2010-03-15 02:19:36 PM
I think the author agreed that ABBA had merit, but I agree with his point. Rock n Roll ain't ABBA, or maybe it is now...I give up.

That's why I listen to alternative. (which means?)

My personal HoF "snub" list of eligible acts:
-Deep Purple
-Judas Priest

maybes:
-BOC (too lazy to dig up the umlauts)
-Moody Blues (I'm biased but somebody else suggested above)

All I'm coming up with off the top of my head right now, but I'm sure I'm missing some.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. Along the same lines, it seemed like for many years they were pushing to add every doo-wop and early rock act they could possibly cram into the place, while again ignoring many of these obvious rock acts. It's basically a circle jerk for the folks from Rolling Stone (Jann Wenner and Dave Marsh in particular) to include every last bit of nostalgia from their early days while excluding anything they don't understand.

If it weren't so much fun to biatch about it, what would be the point?

That said, I forgot another name I'd like in there: Def Leppard. Then again, they'd probably be, say, pork rinds or Fritos to ABBA's Hostess treats. And since just about all of DL are vegetarians now, I've abused my poetic license.

Not that I care about this sort of thing but you're dead-on about the Rolling Stone establishment pretty much controlling who gets into the RRHOF and who doesn't. If you want a good indicator about whether a certain group or artist is going to get in, dig up the original Rolling Stone reviews for their albums. Regardless of how well their music's aged, if they regularly got raked over the coals by the Rolling Stone music critics 30 to 40 years ago, the only way they're going to get in is to buy a ticket.

(Of course, I'm not exactly too upset about the absence of KISS or Yes. Of the groups mentioned by the Great_Milenko, I think only Rush really deserves to be in.)
