Why do a remake when there's so much other fun stuff to play with? I'd like to see what could be done with The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved.

I think it's time to remake Avatar. Enough time will have passed when it's complete.

I think Hollywood should just make five films every year:

Romantic Comedy
Horror
Period Romantic Drama
Comedy
Action

They can all star the same people and be the same basic film. Think of the time and money it can save. Hollywood can even outsource the writing to China to save some cash.

2010-03-15 09:36:34 AM
There ARE other Hunter S Thompson books that can be adapted into movies. eg: "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail"

2010-03-15 09:37:28 AM
No. This cannot and should not happen.

that's exactly what they do in Japan.

I say if you're going to remake a movie, it has to be at least a couple of decades old first.

Johnny Depp should make "The Curse of Lono" - John Cusack is dead to me after "2012" and "Hot Tub Time Machine"- are you kidding me?

Yea I hear you on that one. Not sure why they're squandering an opportunity to expose audiences to more HST work. That book or The Rum Diaries would make for good movies. I don't want to see a John Cusack and Seth Rogen version of Fear and Loathing in LV

2010-03-15 09:47:36 AM
It's not like anything else Hunter Thompson wrote before the book weren't exercises in trying to get the formula right and then afterwards just running it into the ground.

This is good news to high school and college students who just discovered drug culture and need an entry level hero to look up to. You'll never hear a semi-literate English major pronounce that Bukowski was just "wack" while taking drags off a hookah in the public park.

Nice! Johnny Depp, how unsurprised I am. And that guy that hates Avatars is in it.

Fark Showbiz tab is out of headlines, Monday Edition:

John Cusack's friend, but not necessarily John Cusack as the headline implies, makes vague and unspecific drug addled comments (that in no way resemble a plan that he has discussed with anyone or indeed the basic coherence of an idea that he has explored to any degree) about wanting to make a movie version of a stage version of the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I wouldn't mind seeing Johnny Depp in a Hell's Angels in the style of Fear and Loathing, or even a script derived from the Great Shark Hunt/GSH volume 2/Generation of Swine/Kingdom of Fear/etc.

Wanting to remake a movie is a far cry from in the works. Also, it was writer Steve Pink who said he wanted to do a remake. Apparently throwing in John Cusack's name gets more clickies though.

Subby fail.

I agree. I loved that movie. It was a great adaptation, and HST was a part of making it. That opportunity is now sadly lost. The legacy of that book should now be left alone.

Hey, what the hell do you think you are doing? This is a "Hollywood is out of ideas" thread. Silly facts like this are not allowed.

I would love to have a shot at redoing that movie because we really love the Hunter S. Thompson esthetic.

Anyone who would let those words come from his mouth does not deserve any serious consideration. I still remember the scene in Breakfast with Hunter where HST throws Alex (I'm a genius!) Cox out on his worthless ass. "The Hunter S. Thompson esthetic"! DIAF ...

Also FTFA:
We revised our own adaptation of it and did the American stage production, which ran in Chicago for a couple of months when we had a theater company together.

So, this ran for "a couple of months" in Chicago and now this idiot thinks it's worthy of a Hollywood remake? Well, sure, why not?

If you want to do Thompson so bad then do Hells Angels. There's some great material in there. Sonny Barger alone is a big enough personality for his own movie.

Hey Pal, I will air my butthurt in every Tab.

I will also, as is the case here, point out simple stupidity that doesn't so much hurt my butt as my brain. Slightly misleading for purposes of humor is a fine, fine thing. But wildly misleading for clickies is just boring.

I've always thought that Great Shark Hunt and perhaps Kentucky Derby would translate well on film. However, I believe it was HST's wish that only Depp play him or his alter egos on film. Despite the fact that I like Cusack, he's just no Raoul Duke.

Didn't Depp live in HST's basement for a while before filming Fear and Loathing? I can only imagine the experience.

He would do anything wild if it was in front of a camera. But given the opportunity to feed his overactive attention gland I guarantee you he would agree to making anything in the "HST aesthetic".

He's written about it. It's pretty hilarious. Apparently, Thompson would take no less than 20 minutes to salt and pepper his food, usually an hour.

Depp would follow his every move. When Hunter was driving Depp would pretend to drive from the passenger seat. It was absurd.

Hunter had the Red shark from the movie till the day he died.

If I hung out with Cusack for more than an hour, I'd probably shoot myself too.
