Sunday Heavy Metal Shiat Pile strikes again.

There must be a million of these talentless hack "bands" out there screaming at 100-150 idiots a night.

Fark them, and the idiots who can't find the metal amongst the feces.

Wait.. if you listen closely, you can hear the sound of the pointless genre arguement alarm.

/I'd call them all death metal. Actually, I'd call them all metal.
//I really don't care what you'd call it.

Contrary to popular belief, proper genre knowledge does come in handy in certain situations. For instance, I used to be in an "old-skool" death metal band a few years ago- Think Obituary- Slowly we Rot, Death- Scream Bloody Gore, Pestilence etc. We had problems finding a permanent bassplayer (this was before the myspace age. We had about 3 guys try out - all talented, 2 of them with the emo haircut unfortunately-, but they all wanted to play metalcore/deathcore/mathcore or whatever the hell it is these newer bands are playing. One of them eventually stayed with us anyways for a year or 2 before demanding that some of the songs he had written be used as well. Naturally becuase his taste in metal was more melodic and "core-influenced" it did not work out. Had he learned proper genre distinction we wouldn't have had that mess in the first place. And this is my argument pro-genre argument, and probably also the reason I'm currently single.

Lulz, I listened to those guys out of curiosity, that is some quality stuff right there. Suicide Silence was especially terrible. I can do cookie monster vocals just fine when done well and with good music, but this was just trash. Sounds incredibly juvenile for Hot Topic kids to sound bad ass.... BR00T4LLLLl!

as for the subject of this weeks discussion, eh. I shut it off about 1/2 way through the tune.

It occurred to me that they're just trying to fit 8 lbs of riffs and ideas in a 3 lb box, and the song might have been more interesting as an instrumental.

I like abrupt changes as much as the next guy.. but there's slick ways of doing it, and then there's this method.

Maybe I'm just old and like some breathing room in my music.

Still, talented musicians. They can all play circles around me.

Funny, I regard transition as single most looked over item among new music acts. Personally, I love the way Death and Sepultura (BTR especially) were able to transfer from section to section seamlessly and it FELT right. The change is important but making the transition feel like it should be there is also key.

Oh, and my recommendation for this week, a band I don't think I've heard mentioned here much.

Textures - Laments of an Icarus

kab: It occurred to me that they're just trying to fit 8 lbs of riffs and ideas in a 3 lb box, and the song might have been more interesting as an instrumental.

That was my thought as well. I liked some of the riffs but they really needed to settle on a style and not mix and match in the same song.

2010-03-14 06:36:58 PM
eh, not bad. some of it sounds like they're trying too hard to be "technical metal" by throwing in as many changes as they can cram into a 3 and a half minute track. there's a tasteful way of throwing in changes and still maintain some kind of structure to the song.

In truth, maybe just not my cup of tea.

crypticsatellite: cameroncrazy1984: I say you can be heavy without resorting to sounding like a puppet character.

Of course you can, but the "death metal growl" is part of the genre.

One can also be heavy without distorted guitars or without double bass drums.

What's the/your point?

Autotuned to the point of sounding like a humpback mating call is part of the pop genre. It is... not good.

I'm convinced the maker of Autotune also made a death metal growl machine.

BigSnatch: shadowself: Saborlas: Cookie Monster vocals are a coverup for not being able to carry a tune in a bucket.

In my opinion, they sound ridiculous. I don't understand the appeal - there is no melody, no lyrics (as they are impossible to understand), and no distinguishable difference in sound between any of the growlers. It's like they use the same muppet to sing every one of those songs.

The guy from Opeth can certainly sing, but I really wish he would do so instead of demanding cookies 99% of the time.

If the lyrics are impossible to understand then why do I understand them?

Sure some harsh vocals can be difficult to decipher, but after you listen them for awhile, they become easier to discern.

What I dislike is the Metalcore style of harsh vocals - straight yelling. I can't stand that stuff. Bullet for My Valentine is a prime example of this. The vocalist doesn't use any specific technique for harsh vocals and just yells at the mic.

The biggest detractor with the growling for me is the limitations it has while conveying the emotions of the lyrics. It's the same reason I dislike a lot of the 'yell' bands. Now, there are certain lyrical themes that do fit with growls quite well, but I enjoy a variety of lyrical themes.

Yups, you have to practice a lot, I just don't get it though. One of my best friends was total shiat a couple of years ago. He sounded awful, but now he's actually pretty good. I , on the other hand, still can't get the technique down, so I stick to playing guitar.

All it really does take is practice. The "technique," as far as I've found, Is controlling the bottom of your tongue (where it attaches to the throat). It goes against your singing intuition, which is to use your voice box, so it just takes getting used to.

I've tried it in the past, and the attempts tend to wind up with me saying "ouch", and not trying again anytime soon :P

I am a rather lousy (imo) singer, but I can sing eons better than I can do the growl thing.

You're not going to sound good right off of the bat, and chances are you will sound like cookie monster. The longer you do it, the more power/depth you can get out of it. Back when I recorded an album in 2000, I did all of my vocal tracks in one 8-hour day. All I had was some chocolate milk between takes. We were paying for studio time so there were sparsely little breaks. At that point I had already been working those vox for 8 years.

/thanks Bro, I know it was a cool story.

dadio86: I'm serious - how do you train your voice to do this? Is there a trick?

Here's the trick:
Gargle bleach everyday for 15 minutes. Then run full force into a table at waist height while screaming out different monosyllable sounds and record it. Trust me on this, I used to do tracking for many big death metal bands and even saw George Fisher himself not only attest to this method, but even take it a step farther when he would swallow lit cigarettes. If you were to see the inside of a lot of these guys' throats, you would be both shocked and amazed at the commitment that they have to their art. But such is the way of metal...
