You passed on Thin Lizzy for this?

More Irish Metal:

Waylander - Born to the Fight (new window)

Cruachan - Death of a Gael (new window)

Primordial - The Coffin Ships (new window)

/stop the presses, BigSnatch is linking to Primordial!

BigSnatch: You passed on Thin Lizzy for this?

This is the Sunday Heavy Metal House Call. Thin Lizzy was a decent '70s rock band, but it's a looooooooooooooong stretch to even try to group them in with metal.

Heck, Marc Bolan was a lot heaver than Thin Lizzy, and I never once thought of T-Rex as metal, either.

I say you can be heavy without resorting to sounding like a puppet character.

cameroncrazy1984: I say you can be heavy without resorting to sounding like a puppet character.

Of course you can, but the "death metal growl" is part of the genre.

One can also be heavy without distorted guitars or without double bass drums.

What's the/your point?

I'm curious as to how many SHMHCers are musicians themselves.

I'm an amateur musician; played guitar (classical and electric) for 25+ years now. I've done rock, metal, and electronic music over the years and am now working on a doom metal project. Once I have something in near final form, I may post samples here to get some feedback. Might be cool if others do the same.

We'd have had more fun if we would have done the troll the other way, Admin.

Because it's been a while, SHMHC salutes Judas Priest with the self-descriptive 'Metal Gods', Thank god we don't have to listen to any more sesame street characters this week

Of course that would require going after clicks and not you acting like the rest of these morons and overcompensating for some other physical trait you may be lacking. I can't believe how juvenile you all are.

As usual, your post reeks of hypocrisy.
Yeah we need MORE greenlights of shiat everybody has heard before. There's a reason 'traditional' Metal greenlights tend to average far lower in post count.

This is where you say 'I was just kidding, I thought that it was obvious!'

Speaking of growly vocals and double bass drums, I heard this for the first time the other day, after watching Metal: A Headbanger's Journey's extra disc feature about Norwegian black metal:
secondopinion.vgb.no

Holy crap. I really hope they didn't end up doing power ballads or, well, changing their sound at all.

i always wondered - how does one get their voice to do that? seriously.

Depends on who you talk to... I like their later work, and also some of Ihsahn's solo work, but it does not sound quite the same as the material they put out in their prime. Not power ballads by any stretch though....

I personally don't think it's as good, but I know a lot of hardcore Cynic fans who swear by the new album being just as good if not better than the first.

I like it quite a bit but I find that it's not as engaging as the first one overall. There are brilliant moments for sure on Traced In Air but overall I don't feel it's as good.

This is SHMHC, not Air Supply Sunday

The sap of Air Supply has gotten a billion people laid. Respect.

Thin Lizzy was a decent '70s rock band

These argh argh argh bands in SHMHC aren't fit to sweep the stage after the mighty Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy played on it.

It's good, but it isn't near Focus in its brilliance.

After Anthems, Emperor's kind of sucked.

I saw these guys play a few months back with BTBAM and Animals as Leaders. Talk all the trash you want, but those bands are all extremely talented musicians and really cool guys to boot. After the show Veil of Maya and Animals as Leaders came out drinking with my friends and I. I even got to play around on Tosin's Ibanez RG2228. If you want to complain about vocals go listen to something else, it's metal, not top-40 radio rock.

Ladies and Gentlemen! GroverXIII is on vacation this week, as he and his wife are looking for retirement homes out in Florida and he has kind of placed me in charge of the site while he's gone.

So what happened this week?

We reviewed White Wizzard,Kalmah, Evergrey's A Night To Remember, Burzum, Demon Hunter, and Carach Angren (damned fark filter).

FSF consisted of Dusks Embrace, Demilich, Silent Lapse, and Timeghoul

GroverXiii listened to Forever The Sickest Kids before leaving for Florida, hopefully to wash that garbage out of his brain.

I want you to listen to Chthonic's Mirror Of Retribution, damnit!

and I commit more heresy and libel, and try to see how far I can push PR reps without getting sued on my satire page

Oh, and we have a chatroom now, for you metal fans to b*tch endlessly in over at the main site. It's on that bottom bar, just remember to pop the window out (where the maximize button usually is) so you can scroll the rest of the site without it booting you.

Welp, that's my best Grover impression, how'd I do?

shadowself: Saborlas: Cookie Monster vocals are a coverup for not being able to carry a tune in a bucket.

In my opinion, they sound ridiculous. I don't understand the appeal - there is no melody, no lyrics (as they are impossible to understand), and no distinguishable difference in sound between any of the growlers. It's like they use the same muppet to sing every one of those songs.

The guy from Opeth can certainly sing, but I really wish he would do so instead of demanding cookies 99% of the time.

If the lyrics are impossible to understand then why do I understand them?

Sure some harsh vocals can be difficult to decipher, but after you listen them for awhile, they become easier to discern.

What I dislike is the Metalcore style of harsh vocals - straight yelling. I can't stand that stuff. Bullet for My Valentine is a prime example of this. The vocalist doesn't use any specific technique for harsh vocals and just yells at the mic.

That's right he can really sing. If you listen to their last 2 albums they've really cut down on the cookie monster factor esp in Watershed.

I'm sure you have the all acoustic clean vocals album Damnation.

I'm an amatuer musician and I know MadBassist has played in his share of bands too. If i ever get a project going that I'm pleased with, I'll post some samples.

This weeks SHMHC is just another gimicky deathcore band. Breakdowns, melodic "killswitch-esqe" sections with lots of blast beats arranged in no order with no purpose. Boring.

BTBAM and Animals As Leaders are way out of this band's league, based only on this video it seems like another generic deathcore band to add to the scrapheap

Or maybe it's an actual stylistic choice, go figure. If it's not for you, then it's not for you.. but to determine that a singer sucks because that is how he chooses to deliver vocals is rather silly.

Barlow is a good singer and all, but Iced Earth is boooooorrrring. They haven't been interesting since Night Of The Stormrider. You're really limiting your choices with the whole "will not listen to growling vocals" thing. It's a shame.
