Might want to check your math...

The National Agricultural Statistics Service said this week that preliminary figures show the crop was worth $151.1 million. That's up 5 percent from 2008.

For the year, Maine farmers harvested more than 1.5 billion pounds of potatoes from 55,500 acres of fields.

best potatoes of all time (ALL TIME!): scrub but leave the skin on, cut into 2,3-inch-sized chunks.

meanwhile, get a freezer ziplock bag: pour about
1/3 cup olive oil into it, throw in a LOT of
dried rosemary (1/4 cup?),
2 TBS of dried chopped onion, about
2 TBS of coarse sea salt.

now pour the taters in there (throw out beg of excess oil, etc), seal, and play catch for a couple rounds til its all mixed up. cook at 350 for about 30 minutes, kick it up to Broil for 10 minutes to get them crispy.

2010-03-14 01:51:11 PM
ug. to clarify:

throw out bag of excess AFTER mixing everything, and pour the taters into a roasting, broiling pan, or a cookie sheet to bake.

Idaho not impressed

The USDA estimates 305,000 acres of potatoes were planted in Idaho in 2008, and that the state will produce about 11.5 billion pounds, compared with 13 billion pounds in 2007. Final numbers on this year's output won't be available until 2009.

The agency estimates Idaho farmers produced 378,000 pounds of potatoes per acre this year.

Mayonnaise is of the devil. There is no recipe anywhere in the world that is improved by so much as waving an open jar of mayo in the vicinity.
Ever.

Potatoes are full of iron.

And delicious irony.

Irony: In 2009, potato processing fell by 9% in the US.

Irony: Potatoes have frequently sold for less per pound (for the producer) in recent times than they did in the 1930s. The potato growers make up the difference in volume. Think how much more ten cents was worth in the 1930s. You could buy two loaves of bread for that, or a couple of five cent cigars. The processors, wholesalers and retailers get most of the money.

Irony: The fruit of the potato is toxic. It's part of the same family as the famous poisonous plant, belladonna. Italian ladies would use diluted drops of belladonna extract to make their eyes look big and beautiful. This was long before botox treatments were invented.

2008 was the International Year of the Potato. You missed it.

I tried Cold River, wanting to support the local economy. Was underwhelmed, esp. for the $ it cost.
