Did he recite bible verses before blowing them away?

"And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there. Motherfarker."

God said "Thou shall not murder", not "kill". There is a big difference.

"If there was a burglary in progress, they had the right to shoot them," Blank said of what happened at the chapel. "We had so many break-ins and vandalism out here this winter. They're not going to stop until somebody gets killed."

Now, I'm no lawyer. Oh, wait, yes I am. And thumbing through my law books here, let's see, res judicata, restitution, no, no, ah, here it is: Reasonable Force . Hmm, let's see here. "The degree of force which is not excessive and which is appropriate," nuh nuh nuh. (Pause).

Yep, sorry, nothing in here about gunning down rednecks in the House of the Lord for burglary. Sorry, Ms. Blank--if that is your real name--but you are a bit off in your legal position, at least as far as the common law goes. Now, as far as the law of He Who Walks Behind the Rows or whatever Hillbilly Justice you have in lieu ofthe rule of law, well, you got me.
2003-04-25 02:08:00 PM
LarsThorwald I always thought that if someone actually breaks into your house (or the Lord's house in this case) and you really feel your life or the lives of your loved ones were in danger you could pretty much shoot the shiat out of them as long as it wasn't "excessive i.e. reloading to make sure you shoot off ALL their fingers and toes.

You could be absolutely right though. Theres all sorts of warped stoner legal logic in my head that Im sure has absolutely no validity behind it.
2003-04-25 02:08:47 PM
The stereotypical redneck can carry around a pig-sticker, too, LarsThorwald. That's what makes any trespasser a potential murderer, and you do not have time to ask if he intends to kill you.

Wow. In Alaska, even the priests pack heat. This sounds like something that could have happened in Texas.

Guess I should stop burgling all the wine from the local parish.

Did O.J. get the message?

Good job padre. All thieves deserve to be shot.

"Bill O'Hara said he got a call Tuesday from one neighbor who thought a bear got on her roof but instead found a man up there scoping out the house."

"Give em hell," - God
2003-04-25 04:09:12 PM
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

God said "Thou shall not murder", not "kill". There is a big difference.

Possibly, but then if you flip the storybook ahead, you find a loving Savior, upon whom the teachings of modern Christianity are supposedly based, who condemns those who harm others under any circumstances.

Under the Old Testament commandments, things are a little more questionable. But Jesus would most likely disapprove, and most importantly, the law which this man lives under disapproves. No dice for Reverend Triggerhappy.
2003-04-25 04:13:00 PM
Nice shootin' Reverend. Maybe you can moonlight as a security guard to make extra ca$he.
2003-04-25 04:14:04 PM
I wonder if george cloony was there, and if the vampires were involved...
2003-04-25 04:14:28 PM
Excellent job, you beat me to it.

Preparing for yet another impending religious flamewar later in the thread....

"She grabbed a shotgun and racked a shell," said O'Hara, the Big Lake Community Council president. "This person hit the ground running."

I'm pretty anti-gun but I very much like this little piece of deterence. The Kah-CLACK of a shotgun shell being chambered making mr. bad guy run away shiatting himself is a pretty funny mental image.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
Make my aim true so that I blow off their face.

Now the next rap trend will be for all rappers to have Pastors as bodyguards.

2003-04-25 04:15:16 PM
Yay tho I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil for the lord Smith and Wesson is with me
2003-04-25 04:15:27 PM
Someone give this Reverend a medal for defending the local community.

Why do so many Farkers feel a need to demonize people for doing things like this? These were vandals. Criminals. Robbers. They were breaking in. Shooting someone to prevent theft is justified.
2003-04-25 04:15:36 PM
Well, he is a Pastor, not a Priest. Doesn't that mean he's allowed to fark women and kill theives?

Looks like he just saved the taxpayers a bundle. For most of you out there, how many years of your life would be represented by someone taking $50,000 worth of stuff out of your crib? Quite a few, I bet.

HumbleGod: some Christians are pascifists and say its NOT Ok to kill even in self-defence, because Jesus promoted peace. Most other Christians interpret it differently and say its OK to kill in self-defence, its OK to kill the evil and wicked, most of them seem to quote the Old Testament.

as a Christian, im somewhere in between, I dont think its OK to kill someone just because they are 'evil' or 'wicked' in your eyes, I dont think the death penalty is OK.

But I did support the war in Iraq, and I do think killing in self-defence is OK, and if the priest thought he life was in danger, then it was OK for him to shoot the thief. If the priest shot the thief simply because he was pissed the thief was robbing his stuff, then that is not OK.

my 2 cents

Murderous Christians...

C'mon people you are missing the real story. This is a town where a noise on the roof means "must be a bear."
2003-04-25 04:22:01 PM
That's some Old Testament preachin'!
2003-04-25 04:23:26 PM
ATTENTION FARKERS: Please note the proper use of punctuation. The comma goes inside the quotation makrs.

Thank you, that is all.

SuseJ: I am not too sure what the invasion of Iraq has to do with this article, but since you brought it up, is it OK for the Iraqi people to shoot invaders in self-defense? just wondering.....

Does the English Nazi thing ever get old? I mean really now.
2003-04-25 04:26:00 PM

What if they were spray painting his walls outside the church? What if they'd broken in to get warm? What if they were just plain ol stinkin drunk and came to the wrong house (their house was schoolhouse red too?)? What if they were Japanese students looking for a halloween party?

Not saying that these guys were anything but (meth freak?) crooks looking for an easy place to rob, but I just don't think being caught in a crime against property is deserving of a summary death sentence.

Flame away, gun loving Americans. Tell me how safe you all are because of your guns. Tell me lots of anecdotal evidence about grandma saving herself from a burglar while you ignore the statistical fact that you KILL each other with guns 10X more than any other population not at war.
2003-04-25 04:27:12 PM
TaiFong: Today I'm the English positive reinforcer, not the Nazi.

Would the English positive reinforcer like to tell me what quotation makrs are?

Bill Wyck: Those death rates are not 100% related to guns. Although we do tend to kill ourselves quite a bit, it's not any worse than many other countries. And gun crimes are lower now than they have been in a while, mainly because the numbers have decreased in the right to carry states, like Florida and Texas. New York has cleaned up its act in other ways as well. If we could only get California to come around, and I guess Maryland too now.

/i'll see your flame war, and raise you an outright threadjack
2003-04-25 04:30:39 PM
Bill: We dont know the details of the burglary. Maybe they came at the pastor with a baseball bat. Maybe it was THEIR pistol, the pastor wrestled it from them and shot them in self defence. Who knows. I agree with you that we dont have all the details, stop judging and condeming everyone who owns a gun. They have a constitutional right to a gun, and they arnt bad people for owning them, so take it easy.

Sroth: I dont want to turn this into in Iraqi argument, but there is a huge hole in your comparison. In my statement, someone is coming at you with the intent to kill you, you kill them as your ONLY way out from death.
In the Iraqi scenario, if they simply put down their guns and get on the ground, or put up a white flag, they will survive, so its not their only way out. Far far different scenario.

Not that I am against defense of the home/self, etc, I do hope that our downward economy never winds up with me on the street. I'd rather get a prison cell for trying to feed myself, than a visit to the morgue.

Of course, these guys may just be loser scumbags, but blind justice misses out on stuff.
2003-04-25 04:31:23 PM
What if they were spray painting his walls outside the church?

If someone were spraypainting the walls of my home, I'd shoot them before I'd let them escape. They are destroying MY property.

What ifthey'd broken in to get warm?

And how is one supposed to determine the purpose for an intruder's invasion while still doing it in such a fashion that they can react should the intruders have violent intent?

What if they were just plain ol stinkin drunk and came to the wrong house?

It would be an unfortunate incident that further provides proof that you should drink responsibly.

KILL each other with guns 10X more than any other population not at war.

The funny thing is that many of these statistics lump in all gun shootings without regard to circumstance, so the 10x figure includes criminals shot in armed confrontations with police and people legitimately defending their homes. Without context, the statistic is meaningless.

Wick's Friend:

What if they were aliens with death rays?

Implausible, but that idea comes from the same place you got your "what-ifs." There are times when you simply don't have the ability to hold hearing on the intentions of those who are ALREADY breaking the law. If two guys break into your place, and you are outnumbered but armed, I would like to know what your candy@$$ would be doing.
2003-04-25 04:34:25 PM
For the "this-was-excessive" force folks:
Let me get this straight: someone comes into my house to steal things. I catch them doing so. At this point they have already demonstrated that they are happy to break the law, and while so doing to force me into a situation in which they will have the power to take the things I have made or worked to purchase...and I'm supposed to assume that their only intent is to steal? Uh, no. I'm shooting first and asking questions later, and sleeping fine no matter what happens.
Good riddance.

Demension: Killing someone for spraypainting your garage is sick. Period. You should really take two steps back and think about that. What if a cop decided to shoot you for speeding? You have to draw the line somewhere. And the line is drawn when you feel your LIFE or livelihood is in danger, or the life of others, you dont kill someone just because you have to repaint your garage. That is petty.

When I was 14, I was playing a joke on a friend I was out on a walk with, I had behind a car in someones driveway trying to lose him. A couple of minuts later the owner of the house came outside with a shotgun pointed at my face telling me to stop trying to break into his car. He almost shot me from his window when he saw me.

It could have been a very tragic accident, my point is you dont just shoot people just because they may cause you an inconvenience.
