He's only 50? Why do I feel like U2 has been around forever?

2010-03-14 10:58:30 AM
Why one? There are tons of other U@ songs with betyter sounding bass. Tons.

2010-03-14 11:05:25 AM
Led Zeppelin had a better bass player.

I just like the song.

U2 is a rock band?

The one responsible for the Pop album gets no bday wishes from me, EVER.

I loved these guys. (The live at Red Rocks is among the best live concerts ever!) I saw them in '81 and was knocked out by them. But, why the hell didn't they break up in the 90's? They're as relevant as freakin' Aerosmith these days.

Z4ph0d: The one responsible for the Pop album gets no bday wishes from me, EVER.

Haha, I like some of their older stuff (War is a masterpiece) but every song on Pop and Zooropa is terrible. I finally erased them from my computer the other day because every song that came up on my random list I would skip anyway.

2010-03-14 01:18:24 PM
The Bay City Rollers had a better bass player.

// U2 sucks

you could say that about every band, except for maybe Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers. John Paul Jones is a genius

Thanks, Subby, for not playing "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". Radio stations around here seem to think that is the _only_ song U2 ever did.

/never hear Bullet the Blue Sky on radio here :p
//to recap, Charlotte radio is teh suck

They are turrible

I'm not a big U2 fan, but this is a great song.

Happy birthday to the man who has played more 8th notes than anyone else on the planet.

lostinspace1978: So they were struggling for a new sound and they came up with No Line On The Horizon, which sounds like Coldplay b-sides? Way to go Eno, maybe it's time to break out your deck of cards to make decisions with again.

Two bass players who would like a word with you:

It is.

Henry Holland

Shulman, Squire, nice picks.

Shulman's a great bassist.
I love his bass riff at the end of the "Octopus Medley".

I'd also like to add 1973-1974 King Crimson's John Wetton to that list.

Seconded. I saw them in the late '80s and they connected to the audience unlike any other band I ever heard. They lost me with the popmart tour. The point is to inspire your fans beyond the ordinary, not rub their noses in something they already know sucks.

The morning crew on our modern rock station will play either Bullet the Blue Sky, Vertigo, or Desire at least once a week.

The two classic rock stations and two "adult contemporary" stations seem to forget "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for" and "New Year's Day" aren't that great to begin with, but play them constantly.

One is one of U2's best songs, and also the one that inexplicably gets played at every single wedding I attend.

You have a superior taste in music my friend. GG is awesomeness wrapped in bacon. Squire's always been one of my faves as well. He has such a weight to his tone and he almost always is the driving force of the song.

+1 music nerd points

U2 sucks hard.

2010-03-14 08:42:01 PM
Not a fan really but whenever I have listened to a U2 song, it's clear the bass drives many of their tunes. New Year's Day is a great example. It's a very simple approach but the bass line is clean and driving. People appear to like this since they have sold more records than any of the bands you guys have posted before my post, and most likely any of the bands that will follow my post.

I'll say this- I don't know if Adam is writing all the bass lines or if it's The Edge. But either way their approach on the use of bass in rock music is a straight up winner.

2010-03-14 08:44:56 PM
New Year's Day has a far more iconic bass line

Necrosis: Haha, I like some of their older stuff (War is a masterpiece) but every song on Pop and Zooropa is terrible.

No.

Even if you have never picked up a bass guitar in your life, you could learn how to play the bass part to "New Years Day" in about 30 seconds.

I beg to differ.

This song was, for me, the end of U2..saw them in the early days, and I've never actually paid the least bit of attention to them since "One". Kind of sad, really.

2010-03-15 01:12:30 AM
U2 can be summed up in one word - LAME.

2010-03-15 01:18:09 AM
"one of the greatest rock bands of all time.". LOL! Nice one, subby. See, future subbies? It's not so hard to be legitimately funny. ( it's funny because subby is talking about U2)

2010-03-15 01:45:23 AM
It's bizarre to me that out of all of the troll headlines that get passed on Fark music, U2 somehow dodges getting one.

2010-03-15 02:03:47 AM
What about the headline isn't trolling? It's stating an opinion about something in pop culture. That's all trolling is on Fark!

/hatin. it's bad for you

Henry Rollins of Black Flag called U2's Clayton and Mullins "the worst rhythm section I've ever heard"

If you were to base this opinion on ticket sales and longevity, there'd be no question of it.

Just sayin.

Every U2 Thread in a nutshell:

People who like U2: Yay happy birthday Adam. This is a better song than One though *posts link*

People who disregard everything post-Achtung: They should have retired/broken up blah blah blah

Hipsters who are too cool for U2: OMGU2RTEHSUXORS How can you listen to mindless crap yadayadayada

/Kind of like the bassist debate twist, that's something new.
