That's pretty funny, since Asheville has become home to so many modern-day hippies, artists, and other folks who stereotypically would say that violence is a bad thing.

I thought the fascination with Chuck Norris died when he was spouting seriously crazy political bullshiat this last election...

Guess not.

That's what I was thinking. I'd think Asheville would be more about the artsy-fartsy, and GLBT movie genres. Kind of a Brokeback Mountain meets Dazed & Confused meets Ivory Merchant.

I've been to Chicago, New York and Atlanta and I had to move to Asheville to see junkies shooting up in an alley 30 feet from a occupied cop car.

It's an interesting city.

I live here and I agree. We have an "art cinema" downtown that does ok and shows a lot of alternative films, stuff that might not get play elsewhere. Some are mainstream titles, others are just art films that couldn't fill a standard cinema if they were free.

There already is a -fest of sports action movies, like mountain biking, climbing, kayaking, hiking. That does ok as it runs the same w/e as the mountain sports festival.

This place is a city that struggles to find itself. It's an interesting mix of conservatives (in the surrounding county) and liberals (in the city). A bunch of tea baggers that pre date the tea bagging movement. Lots of Palin stickers, along with the "We Still Pray" (no prayer in schools, hasn't been for years but for some they still have to make a big deal over since while their kids can't pray in schools, they can at home). The city is also bouncing around bennies for same sex couples.

Economy is odd. A business decides to hire 120 people, they catch hell from both sides. From the conservatives because the jobs are tourist related and from the libs because the jobs don't include full bennies). Brew pubs open, libs embrace, conservatives hate because beer is the evil. City is in debt but they want to spend their way out of it.

Weed....I'd not want to get caught with herb around here. In the surrounding area, esp to the north the choppers are out daily looking for the odd plant or two. No jail time if you get caught, just a fine you can make payments on.

Really?

I went there once and wasn't impressed. Screens are ok but it's a very odd building. Regal 15 in Biltmore is much nicer and I can walk there.

I'm guessing NC conservatives are different than OR conservatives...

Every day at noon, Chuck Norris donates roughly $10 to the Bruce Lee estate. He then fasts until suppertime.

You don't live in The Forest at Biltmore Park, do you?

On Columbine. I like it there. Quiet. Probably move back to Junaluska, that was the perfect place although a long drive into work. Used to live in West AVL but got tired of living next to a section 8 place that was never maintained.

It's also where a lot of conservatives tired of all the taxes and votes-being-meaningless in CA are retiring. Chuck Norris conservatives, essentially.

/I'd totally go to Actionfest

Was just in Asheville last week and plan to return tomorrow actually. I love the whole town, the French Broad chocolate bar in particular.

[shameless self-plug]

Any Asheville natives need or know someone who needs a tech-savvy English/Spanish double major who graduated magna cum laude with six months' experience and one promotion in a call center and about eight months' prior experience working in restaurants?

No offense, but I was hoping to flee that scene forever (didn't get fired, current housing situation trumps my employment).

I'm in tech, last position we filled was in 2005. I'd check indeed/monster/dice. Selection has been slim, last tech gig I saw was at UNC Asheville and paid like 42k/yr.

I bartended at Barley's before law school - should see some of the stuff happening in the little grotto behind in the building come closing time.

Then again, maybe not.

It's easy to find bad when you are looking for it.

/Reminds me the first place I saw real unadulterated hate crime was Berkeley California :) Maybe I was looking for it :)

Norris, star of the long-running TV series "Walker, Texas Ranger" and many action films, will be given the first Lifetime Action Achievement Award.

The festival was created by Aaron Norris (brother of Chuck Norris)...

So Aaron, brother of Chuck, decides to create a "festival" just to give his brother a Lifetime "achievement" award. Wow. That's pretty pathetic.
