No one who owns multiple dogs would be surprised to find there is lots of info contained in a growl.

What would be interesting to know if this communication is learned or instinctive, and if there are some dogs better at getting the message than others. (I think there is).

So, what is my dog trying to communicate when he makes Chewbacca/tard sounds?
Trying to imitate human speech?

/Seriously, has any research been done on this?

Dog barks are more interesting.

My lab has about seven,
ranging from barking at the cat on the deck or squirrels
in the trees to the much more serious, there is someone in
the yard, and the hellacious

there's another farking dog in my farking yard

Some breeds have a definite vocabulary of grunts, growls and barks. Our dog has one very specific growl sound she makes when she wants outside.

Cool a dog thread. I have an important and pressing question. My dog is asleep right now and growling, yelping, and kicking her legs. I'm pretty sure she is having a nightmare. Should I wake her up?

What about noises like "Arrrough roooo arrr rooo rerr errrrrr? Mararr uf err! Mararr woorar wuff"
I swear that means something more than "I want steak with a side of liter coated cat feces."

If it gets too distressing, she'll wake herself up.

Too late. I woke her up and she bit me. If only there was an old saying about sleeping dogs that applies...

Interesting. Your dog expresses a strong desire for steak.

My dog Jenny used to growl at me when we played sock tug-o-war ... and she really growled when I eschewed holding the sock in my hand and put it in my teeth (I figured that leveled the playing field for her a little bit).

Friends watching me do this would ask "Aren't you afraid she might snap at you, given that your face is about six inches from her mouth? And it looks like she really wants that sock."

I'd say "Nawww ... she loves me too much and it's all in good fun. That's just her way of "trash talking" (I growled too sometimes, just to egg her on).

Gawwd ... I miss her.

Nope. Let them catch that freaking rabbit for once! Yes, they are dreaming.

Yep. If you start seeing patterns in the gibberish they mean something, ie: they make the same set of sounds trying to wake you up in the morning etc.. We have about ten of our dog's various vocal sounds figured out. The dog has also figured out that if she does the potty dance someone will get up and she can then try to change that into "hey get me a treat since your up".

You had her put down after she bit you on your face while playing tug-of-war, am I right?
