Wow, that's the third city hall I've seen on this ride!

rtfa . . .

Oh, like that'll help. They'll disconnect the screen, or say it comes on "in traffic, on tuesdays, randomly, or due to sunspots, and not to worry, they're being charged the in-town rate"

Las Vegas cabbies are notorious for clicking on the airport surcharge on every ride

2010-03-13 02:42:35 PM
So they have the technology to know that *specifically* 35,558 were overcharged, yet couldn't stop the problem after, I don't know, the first 15,558 happened?

and air is free

in chicago our cabs have a $1.00 air surcharge and a $0.50 fee for every additional passenger that requires oxygen :(

Well, this explains all the wealthy and well-dressed cab drivers I saw in NYC.

Air isn't exactly free here. We have to pay an emissions council to ensure that we can continue to breathe. Or drive from October to March.

I like farking around with cabbies in the city. I'll take a cab on a route I usually drive and I'm quite familiar with. Sometimes I'll botch the address and act like I don't know the area, other times I'll give specifics.

If you botch, they extend. If you're specific, they beeline. If they extend and you ask why they took a turn when they didn't have to, hilarity ensues.

/likes most late night cabbies

///they have -hilarious- stories

yeah i'm always amused by the routes they suggest taking from the airport when i just give them an address. i'm pretty sure they'd take me from o'hare to lakeview via midway if they thought they could get away with it.

I dunno, it think it's a good idea to have them keep keeping records. Otherwise, you wouldn't have any proof on how much they're abusing this and how ineffective it is.

This is a very specific rip-off. But, almost all of the stories of NYC cabs pulling scams are a myth.

Especially the one about driving you in circles to run up the meter.

Cab drivers make more money taking people on lots of short trips. And because there are so few cabs by design they are almost always in demand.

The one crime they are often guilty of is refusing to drive to outer boro neighborhoods.

yeaaah ive seen the pedicab driver/cab driver fight. sure the pedicab driver is an idiot, so was the cab driver... he blaring his horn at the pedicab in manhattan traffic, cuts off the person in the left lane, uses his vehicle as a weapon to stop the pedicab, then gets out of his cab halting traffic.

again i'm not justifying what the pedicab driver did, but i've been on the receiving side of a cabbie using his vehicle as a weapon and have held back the hurling your coffee and going apeshait urges.

yeah different areas work it differently. i do it in chicago and have taken rides for 0$ to 300$. if you are going a mile or less and dont have like 8 people, i will usually just ask for a tip.

Not anymore. It contains CO2. Don't you pay attention? The EPA has declared it a hazardous material and anyone producing CO2 will be fined. When Cap and Tax Leftistlation takes affect, everyone will pay through the nose for the air we breath.

predictable. and stupid.

2010-03-13 06:39:30 PM
I had a cabbie offer me a cheaper rate to go from work to home if I called him directly versus going through dispatch. If he wasn't available, he'd send a buddy, same deal.

If you don't have a crazy amount of luggage per person, just take the L, especially going to Lakeview. Might not always be faster, but O'Hare to Belmont or Addison via the Jackson transfer tunnel is predictably $2.25. I found myself in Chicago several times last year, and taking the train in from Midway was never an issue.

JeffTL: just take the L

how is that comparable to a taxi? you have to wait for the train. stand on the tracks. up stairs /down stairs. stop at each stop on the way.

You are forgetting that a cabby is curbside to curbside. Are you comparing them in terms of time or what is the basis? because obviously taking shiatty public transport vs. getting a ride in a private commercial vehicle (not a shuttle with other passengers) is the same?

/walking is cheaper
//staying home and not going at all is even cheaper than that

vegas cabbies also are the reason that the monorail does not go to the airport. Farkin lobbies.

Also, they will take a lap around the airport before heading to the strip.

Meh

I have to fly to Atlanta on a regular basis - I would gladly pay an NYC rape rate if it meant I didn't have to fear for my life riding in a cab from ATL to downtown.

Recent adventures

- Driver arguing on the phone and wandering over 2 1/2 lanes
- Driver repeatedly falling asleep (at 2 PM) and me poking him in the shoulder
- Driver heading south from the airport - when Atlanta and the rest of the world is North

- etc..

2010-03-13 08:09:03 PM
Of course, they feel it's entirely justified based on the number of fares that split without paying. For the cabbies, at least, it probably breaks about even.

2010-03-13 08:38:59 PM
I like the air is free for now thing. I remember when potable water was free. I would have been mystified if someone told me in the future you'd have to pay for decent water or buy a filter if you didn't want arsenic, pharmaceuticals etc in your water.
