img1.fark.net indeed.

There's so much information in there that absolutely shreds the self-righteous "family values" bullsh*t that comes out of those states. Unfortunately, as this is old news to some and the rest are in denial, it's not likely to do much good.

On the other hand, I don't think I'd ever really fully considered that the above-mentioned self-righteousness was yet another example of projection. I guess until now I'd thought maybe it was a "this works for us so everyone should have to do it" thing. Guess not.

This thread should be fun to read when I get home from work tonight.

Idaho and Utah are Mormon states. I dunno about the other two. Baptists? Southerners?

2010-03-13 02:22:37 PM
Well, why not? Gotta get started early so you can fit in another 3-4+ short-duration marriages.

Here in nebraska, I've known several people from high school who got married, had kid(s) and they're now divorced. Seems like the average age is even younger than the article.

Something-something sanctity of marriage.

Shotgun weddings, before the bump shows.

Based on my observations the last time I was in the land of my conception, bastardy is awlrite. Seems like my extended kin can't turn around twice without dropping a litter from some random trucker or meth dealer.

Marry 'em off when they're young and foolish and poor. It's better than breaking their legs so they don't run away at the first opportunity.

Has somebody got that list of states ranked by IQs close to hand?

I'd like to compare that with the list of "early marriers".

I have a suspicion that there'd be some interesting correlations.

it is amazing how quickly CorpGovMedia's propaganda is ingested and internalized by the proles, as evidenced by the groupthink here on the internet that holds that early marriage is a Bad Thing. Ooooh...they are gettin married early. How horrible!

The fact is that the culture of america has been molded to optimize profits for the corporate investors. Having women get married early and stay at home does little for corporate profits. These women tend not to go to college and take on student loan debt. Oooh! That's bad for corporate profits. These women do not get into the workplace as much, thus failing to increase the supply of labor to a degree that would tend to depress wages to the degree that CorpGovMedia would like. Oooh! That's bad.
So many bad things about getting married early and having kids.

Typically "Southern states" refers to those states that are:

1) South of the Mason-Dixon line
2) Former members of the Confederacy

Oklahoma typically doesn't count, since it was simply "Indian Territory" at the time.

Some people may suggest you're a moron because you quoted someone who didn't bring up religion to make a point about how people here are anti-religious.

That when combined with the "homo" retort makes me think you're actually a very angry, deeply repressed, closeted gay teen in an overwhelmingly religious small town.

I never mentioned religion, unlike several other people in the thread. I was talking straight IQs.

There's so many religious denominations and sects in America, not to mention churches of various social and economic status within each of them, that you wouldn't expect a very strong correlation between IQs at a state level--if anything, you'd have to look at congregations. The same is true, say, of a large religious group such as Roman Catholics. You'd expect Roman Catholics to be middling, near average because there are a lot of them. If you wanted to link IQ to marriage habits, you'd have to go control for socio-economic class or education, and that would sort out by parish, not by state.

I was thinking more along the lines of the maxim, "keep 'em ignorant, pregnant and barefoot".

Religion? Some particular sects maybe. Flaky, in it for the money, sects recruit college graduates and may even administer an IQ test. Low brow hillybilly sects may have more than their fair share of low IQs. But all in all, I was thinking along the lines of demographics pure and simple, not religion, and more in jest than in seriousness. It's hard to control for social effects, and marriage is a very complex social phenomenon which is pulled this way and that by many factors.

All in all, the comparison of IQs versus early marriage only tells us what we already know: professional, educated, intelligent women often marry later than farm girls and working class girls because it takes them longer to get an education, save for a home or a wedding, find a suitable mate, etc. It was that way even before women were taught to read. Rich girls shop around. Poor girls have limited choices and they do the best they can with the materiel that comes to hand. It works about the same either way, although early marriages are soonest broken, statistically speaking.

2010-03-13 05:17:52 PM
An explanation for early marriage/high divorce states: A writer once said that real Southern ladies marry everybody they sleep with. My personal theory is that traditional minded people don't just write off impulsive sexual affairs, but feel a need to legitamicize them through marriage. But making it legal doesn't make it legit, just messy to get out of.
