(Some Guy) Stupid Over 100 arrested for riot at Metallica show; police say it happened during that one Metallica song where they go from the Fm to E chord. No, not that one. Or that one, either. No, the other song with the Fm to E. No, the other one like that   (femalefirst.co.uk) divider line 59

This headline sucks. I'm so alone in here.

2010-03-13 03:57:04 AM
It clearly says people were trying to crash the concert in the article subby, why oh why did you have to write such a shiatty article? It's not even remotely funny!

2010-03-13 03:57:57 AM
I mean headline, not article. I'll stop talking to myself now.

2010-03-13 03:58:23 AM
I think the headline is hilarious. But I'm only 77% sure.

Who gave the trolls sheet music?

...Takes out guitar

Fm, E, Fm, E

Hmmmmm...Didn't sound like any Metallica song I've heard, but it's like 4:30AM here and I only strummed my acoustic VERY lightly so as not to wake up the spouse. Plus, the only Metallica I really know comes from Weird Al polka covers.

I'll fire up the amp later on, throw in some heavy distortion, and try it again. That's regular old Fm with the barre, right? We're not talking some kind of drop-tuned cheater chord, are we?

2010-03-13 04:37:28 AM
Subby is obviously not a fan of thrash metal, which is fine, but it begs the question:

They do have quite a few songs that do that, but shoehorning it into a headline about a riot doesn't work at all.

Not subby, but Metallica is pop thrash. Dark Angel or Coroner are real manly thrash.

For some people, metal is about 3 bands deep (Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer).

The music headlines here on FARK just keep getting worse as each day passes. The trolling has gotten really old.

Metallica sucks.

That is all.

Let me just pop in to voice my support of the general consensus that the headline sucks, and subby's mom blows goats in Tijuana.

Metallica have never used the Fm chord. Nice try though.

2010-03-13 10:06:17 AM
F major to E minor, maybe ... but never the other way around.

You're late for Introduction to Music Theory, tardmitter.

Of all of their songs that I've played, I can't remember a single one that uses Fm. Hell I can't recall one that uses a barre chord.

True. The harmonized Phrygian mode yields F major and E minor as its i and bII chord, but they don't have any songs/riffs in E phrygian where this occurs...it's all open fifths. Would it destroy us as a nation to learn the most basic music theory? I mean, come on. It would take about 3 months to learn this baby stuff.

Music programs are the first to get cut in cash-strapped school districts, but even that wouldn't have helped this discussion... Because, the music theory you just applied, ie a greek mode it's chords, goes well beyond any course I ever took in highschool (and I took most of them) or even the intro to music courses in college. THAT's the sad part: what education they do give you is watered down.

/I prefer ascending melodic minor and it's modes.
//less perfect 5ths's ftw!

2010-03-13 10:53:38 AM
Ye gods what an awful headline.

They have numerous songs where they'll switch an E minor-based riff to F# minor. Maybe that's what you meant? Even so, cripes.

Thank you.

Do you think Testament should be included in that crowd, or am I overstepping my bounds?

Dunno about Testament. W.A.S.P., maybe?

Yes. God that expression grates when used in the colloquial sense.

C Am F G E, yes. F#5 C#m B A E, yes. F5 E5, yes. Fm E? No.

Ok, I'll bite. You are familiar with the fact that metal does stray from classic progressions?

Either that or you are not familiar with modern music, "power" chords, and how people use them ad nausem in metal. Or you're a troll.

Call it leaning towards chromatic and call it a day :)

Music would be awfully boring if all the "rules" were adhered to strictly.

Elliott Carter agrees.

If there is a Metallica song that uses Fm E repeatedly, I am unaware of it. Then again, I haven't listened to anything they've done since AJFA except the bottom of the ninth at Yankee games.

Awesome, he's a great composer.

As for the incident in the article, fark people who try to break in to shows without tickets, they just make it worse for everyone by causing more cops to be around.

I just wrote a big rant arguing semantics, and how I didn't say anything about Metallica's compositions in particular. And then I saw this post.

You're a troll. Any other explanation would be unpossible, seeing as how you're not a jazz musician. They wouldn't play through a 50w tube Marshall.

Stop it.

Music that doesn't sound good to people, doesn't sound good to them.

Douches who pretend they can't enjoy anything but choreographed cacophony that sounds like two random Rush songs spliced at every 5th note, played backwards at 5x speed, performed by bands whose names and song titles are carefully extracted from only the most obscure and/or unpopular mythologies, medical texts, or pareidolia-formed letter strings that pass for words caused by staring too long at Giger paintings, who experiment with chords the way overzealous singers pack 15 tones into a single word of the Star-Spangled Banner, and of whom I've never heard of because I'm not enough, are douches.
