And that was just Whipping Post.

The show was only 1 hour, but it felt like 3.

/nothing against the Allmans, just felt snarky, carry on!

Wow. They sold out all the seats in a small venue and played an hour less than a standard 2 set Phish concert.

I love the Allman Brothers but the headline is absurd.

They draw the funniest collection of fans at their shows, Bikers and Stoners.

F*CK. I was offered free tickets to see them this Saturday night but already committed to going up to Albany.

F*CK!

Even with out Duane they are still the Allman Brothers. Derek and Warren do a great job. The ABB spirit is there and the music is largely the same.

That being said the Duane stuff is still far better. But this new incarnation is better than just about anything else out there right now.

Okay, they played Mountain Jam. Did they play anything else?

Time to go to TPB for the downloads.

Say what you want about them but these guys can still kick it.

As far as noodling for three hours?

Yeah, that sounds like a Phish concert alright.

Santana is another old timer that still puts on an awesome long show. Guy played for close to four and a half hours last time I saw him in Jacksonville.

Actual discussion at a Phish concert: "Are they playing or tuning?" "I dunno, man. Playing, I think."

But I'm not going bash on Phish too much. I've been to jazz shows that were worse -- some lame-o "soloing" over the "I Got Rhythm" or "Cherokee" changes for 30 or 40 farking minutes...badly. Miles Davis could get away with doing on the trumpet because he was good. Mingus could do it on the bass because he was good. Sonny Rollins could do it on a sax because he was good (and even 20 straight minutes of Rollins on a sax gets a little old). Every kid with a horn is convinced he's the next phenom to bring jazz back to the world, but apparently dropped out of school before he got to the "less is more" part of the jazz program.

Dan Akroyd played Carter, and Bill Murray played Cronkite

Walter Cronkite: Thank you, Mr. President, ha ha! Our next call is Peter Elkin of Westbrook, Oregan, whom I am told is 17 years of age.

Peter (on phone): Hello? Hello?

President Jimmy Carter: Yes. Hello, Peter?

Peter (on phone): Is this the President?

President Jimmy Carter: Yes, it is.

Walter Cronkite: Do you have a question for the President?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I, uh.. I took some acid.. I'm afraid to leave my apartment, and I can't wear any clothes.. and the ceiling is dripping, and uh.. I, uh..

Walter Cronkite: Well, thank you very much for calling, sir..

President Jimmy Carter: Just a minute, Walter, this guy's in trouble. I think I better try to talk him down. Peter?

Peter (on phone): Yeah..?

President Jimmy Carter: Peter, what did the acid look like?

Peter (on phone): They were these little orange pills.

President Jimmy Carter: Were they barrel shaped?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. yes.

President Jimmy Carter: Okay, right, you did some orange sunshine, Peter.

Peter (on phone): Very good of you to know that, sir.

President Jimmy Carter: How long ago did you take it, Peter?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I don't know. I can't read my watch.

President Jimmy Carter: Alright, Peter, just listen. Everything is going to be fine. You're very high right now. You will probably be that way for about five more hours. Try taking some vitamin B complex, vitamin C complex.. if you have a beer, go ahead and drink it..

Peter (on phone): Okay..

President Jimmy Carter: Just remember you're a living organism on this planet, and you're very safe. You've just taken a heavy drug. Relax, stay inside and listen to some music, Okay? Do you have any Allman Brothers?

Peter (on phone): Yes, I do, sir. Everything is okay, huh Jimmy?

President Jimmy Carter: It sure is, Peter. You know, I'm against drug use myself, but I'm not going to lay that on you right now. Just mellow out the best you can, okay?

Peter (on phone): Okay..!

President Jimmy Carter: Okay.

T.M.S.:
Wow. They sold out all the seats in a small venue and played an hour less than a standard 2 set Phish concert.
At least there were people on stage who can sing, and way fewer smelly noodle dancers in the aisles.

To be fair, since they've gotten back together this last go-round, and are off of the drugs (supposedly), they've been a light tighter and less spacey. But the fact that I know that probably invalidates the opinion for most people...

And I will agree that they're not the best singers. And some attendees DO smell.

The classic rock station that my boss plays at work busted out all 13 minutes of In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed from the Fillmore the other day and damn! that thing kicked ass. Sure, Duane was a great loss, but Barry Oakley was a fantastic bass player and Dickie Betts was no slouch either.

Reviewer doesn't know shiat about ABB. I never saw them until about '92 or so but they played 3 hours that show, blew me the fark away and Dickey Betts was in prison at the time.

I've seen videos from the '80s - apparently that was when they sucked as did many bands.

Im probably one of the biggest ABB fans there is and it really pisses me off that they are doing the yearly Beacon run and now they are aiming to do the Palace in the same manner. Meanwhile, in Texas, you have to travel either to Houston or Dallas (if youre lucky) just to have a chance to see them. And thats if they come here at all. Meanwhile, the East Coast gets tons of opportunities.

Nothing against Haynes, the guy is awesome but without Dickey Betts it is NOT the Allman Bros.

Remember that Gregg was the last one invited to join the band. I saw them about a week before Dickey was fired from the band. This was about my 5th time seeing them. My girlfriend had never seen them before and she was amazed. What left the biggest impression on her? Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks guitar playing which was indeed spot on that evening.

Who least impressed her? Gregg Allman.

A week later Gregg has him kicked out of the band.

If you're interested in Duane's guitar work, he did some work with Wilson Pickett on a bunch of cover tunes... Hey Joe, Sugar Sugar, Hey Jude (new window).

Awesome
