Obvious tag on vacation.

My favorite part of the Torii Hunter statement was when he said Vladamir Guerrero is not black.

Do Cubans count? Because I think Aroldis Chapman got slightly more than a bag of chips.

Vlad is mostly black, with the exception of his teeth, which are a radioactive shade of green.

Thats exactly what Ozzie said. To be honest, there was so many things to quote, because Ozzie straight up makes Torii look like a whiny idiot. Which he is. To say that Latinos are cheaper to sign is ridiculous. You could perhaps say, that initially perhaps, some of them are more desperate to sign and get to the MLB than some American kids, but theres not really much to lean on there, and not something anyone should attempt to make an argument out of. Torii has already been back pedaling off his statement because he knows it came out bad. I dont think he really has any animosity toward latinos. I think he just honestly playing the whiny race card. I just dont know what sparked him to say these things. But thats all it is. WAH WAH WAH IM BLACK AND GET NO RESPECT ON TOP OF MY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. This is obviously a completely bullshiat statement as Torii Hunter has always been a relative star. I honestly dont know what would make him say such stupid things.

This is one of those retarded ESPN blow-up stories to get people in a p.c. tizzy so they'll tune in. Neither said anything particularly offensive in my mind (besides the word choice of "impostor"), but I realize there are a lot of people out there who get way too offended by things.

I dont blame ESPN for this one buddy. Hunter said some stupid shiat. Clearly hes an athlete so this shouldnt come as a suprise. But still what he said, was dumb. The only reason it may not be taken offensively is because its just so stupid. Not to play the double standards thing, but what do you think would happen if some white guy said that about the blacks and LAtinos? Thered be a farking senate committee hearing over it. Is the story newsworthy? Yes, but only because Torii Hunter said something stupid. Thats about it.

vinnydoz007: The only reason it may not be taken offensively is because its just so stupid.

I agree with this. To me what Hunter said was just poorly articulated, but I kind of understood what he was getting at. I knew he was referring to Latinos of a darker complexion. Part of it is that it's a poor statement, but part of it is society's own ills with how it identifies different colors and creeds.

What he so blatantly did wrong was jump from "African American" to "black". In the States we've decided to have this fear of the word "black" for obvious reasons. Vlad is Latino. Vlad is black. Vlad is not African American, obviously.

So pretty much yes, it was so poorly said that it was inoffensive to me, but I got the gist of what he was saying. To me his words were just another example of how damned difficult we've made it to identify ourselves in this country.

As for the rest of the quote about getting a Dominican kid for a bag of chips and all, yeah, it's ridiculous, but he qualifies the statement by saying that he as an African American player has this theory. The theory might be stupid, but it's his opinion.

(from baseball-reference)
2009 Salary
1. Rodriguez (NYY) $33,000,000
2. Ramirez (LAD) $23,854,494
5. Beltran (NYM) $19,243,682
6. Lee (HOU) $19,000,000
7. Ordonez (DET) $18,971,596
8. Santana (NYM) $18,876,139
9. Zambrano (CHC) $18,750,000

Those are some really farking expensive bags of chips.

Who would have thought that Ozzie Guillen would have a disagreement with someone and be the more intelligent, informed and eloquent party? Not me.

THIS. Someone should inform him that "black" and "African American" don't mean exactly the same thing.

CC Sabathia is black and African American. So is Jimmy Rollins, and Dontrelle Willis and Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder, and a whole host of other players (though obviously not very many, only around 10% of players overall).

David Ortiz is black. So is Vlad. Alfonso Soriano. None of them is African American.

The reason that Torii Hunter went full retard is simple: the African American presence in MLB is diminishing. Very quickly. A few months ago a friend and I tried to think of as many as we could off the top of our head, and we had trouble getting to 30 African American players (not even close to one per team). That's pretty scary. Jimmy Rollins and CC Sabathia and Dontrelle Willis, to name a few, have spoken out about this issue, without sounding like total asshats. Hunter himself has done some great things to bring baseball to disadvantaged youth and struggling communities.

What Torii Hunter is resorting to here is douchebaggery. And now he looks like an idiot, and it's harder to take him seriously on what really is an important topic - why African Americans aren't playing baseball anymore.

kevinshields: why African Americans aren't playing baseball anymore.

Because they are playing football. Next question, yes you in the back.....

Frankly. His statement sounds as if he believe there is someone to blame for this phenomena aside from the fact, that perhaps, African American kids are not drawn to baseball anymore. There are a disproportionate amount of African Americans in the NFL. Probably a worse ratio of AA to hispanic, than the hispanic to AA in the MLB. Is Mark Sanchez whining about any of this? no. Because its no ones fault. Hunter, whether he wants to admit it or not, is basically biatching about something that is no one persons fault. Its simply a trend. Hunter has proven himself to be a moron. and I sure hope no one takes anything he says seriously from here on out.

It is way cheaper to sign Latin prospects than American ones. Torii was correct on that. Obviously once guys are in the majors their origin has no bearing on anything. However, an American player, who could go to college for free, get an education, and have good odds of having a comfortable life is going to take a lot more convincing ($) to forgoe that to make peanuts in the minors with very low odds of making the majors than a Latin player, who really has no opportunity in their homeland.

What I don't get is why the amount of African American players being just over 10% (new window) is "scary".

If we are going by Affirmative Action standards, that seems to be on par with the US demographics where African Americans are just over 12%.

I read a theory:

1. Most black populations are centered in urban areas.
2. With space being at a premium in these areas, it's tough to have baseball fields.
3. These areas are poor, which means that games like baseball (which require more equipment than other sports) are prohibitive.
4. Games like basketball, which require less space and equipment lend themselves to urban areas.

Hence, you'll see more black kids growing up playing basketball than baseball.

Because African Americans are physically superior to whites. It has something to do with the years of selective breeding back in the slave days. My uncle Jimmy told me so.

I mean, its totally plausible. But its not really even something we need to discuss. There is no great conspiracy to keep black players out of the league. Wont people realize, that we may still be racist in a lot of ways, when it comes to money, which is what these sports teams are about, that shiat goes out the window. You think a major GM is gonna pass on Lebron cuz hes black? fark no! This race issue, its nonsense. And no ones fault. It just is the way it is. Hunter is trying to make it seem like someone is to blame. And thats just absurd. Never had much of an opinion on hunter. Now I do.

What is the pct of blacks in the US? Something like 14%.
What is the pct of blacks in MLB? Something like 10%.

I'm talking non hispanic blacks...just "African Americans".

I wonder if whites are represented as a fair percentage of the population in MLB. I will go out on a limb and say no, whites are not represented in MLB as a proportion of the population.

I will go out on a limb and say that in none of the big three (NFL...MLB...NBA) will you find a percentage of white players to be equal or greater than the percentage of whites in the population.

Man, it's tough being white.

Same reason as the very low number of Asians in the NBA (one, right?) as a race, they are on average smaller in stature.

True, but only one ball. Not everyone needs a glove, no bat, etc. If you've got a grassy area, you've got football. Baseball, you have to worry about where the ball goes.

Oh, for f's sake. I long ago vowed to never sign up for Twitter. Now I am rethinking that decision due to Ozzie rants. As a bonus, I am fluent en Español. I love the go-go White Sox to boot.

So I am asking if somebody that does have a Twitter account to kindly cut 'n' paste his latest rants for my pleasure on this forum.
