Those magazines are always touching up photographs. What's so wrong about having to photoshop in a whole head?

"The death scene photographs are some of the most graphic and horrible photographs I've ever seen in my 37 years in law enforcement," Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan said.

"Plus, we all know print's a dying medium. Probably better exposure for me if the pictures show up on StileProject or 4chan."

Larry Flynt likes controversy. If authorities didn't block the release of things like this, Hustler wouldn't try.

This one's a hard pill to swallow. While the respect for the families should be upheld, our waning freedoms should also be taken into consideration.

While hustler may have stepped over the line with their request, likewise we also don't have a right to not be offended by these images.

Sometimes it takes these images to drive home the realities behind their creation, such as the ban on images of the coffins from fallen soldiers. Life isn't a pretty thing sometimes, but putting blinders on out of respect isn't the way to go. Just like the execution of the vietnamese general on the cover of time, or the monks self immolating in protest of china's policies, or more recently neda's death in the failed green revolution in iran.

Sometimes we need to deal with this via personal responsibility, not laws. Let market dynamics deal with any company who crosses a moral boundary for profit and exploitation(although in fairness, flynt probably wouldn't lose any sleep over the protests - the same may not apply to other situations this will affect however).

We cannot run and cower behind censorship at every turn.

Meh.

I have no desire to see her pictures. She was (for what I can tell) an attractive young woman, but her story is very sad.

I also feel sad, yet somehow consoled, that he at least let her dog live.

About the last thing I would ever want to see is nude Streisand pix, decapitated or otherwise.

Flynt put pictures of his wounds from the attempt on his life in his magazine,
so this is at least consistant (if utterly tasteless).

Give the old coot credit: he's all about freedom of information, even if that
information is hard to take.

FTFY.

Flynt has been party to some important moments in recent First Amendment law. But don't think for a second he did it for the greater good or because he's some kind of crusader for the Bill of Rights. If the shock value didn't help keep the name of his rag in the press, and thus allow him to show more poon and sell more merch (mag included), he wouldn't bother.

Larry Flint is a strange character but he knows how to play the game. He's a man whom I've never really agreed with but I've always been glad he's in the game.

Ogrish doesn't exist anymore. It turned into Liveleak. Half the team went and created Uncover Reality forums, which is basically the old Ogrish.

Larry Flynt purchased originals of and destroyed similar pictures in the past.

He likes to cause a ruckus with small time arrogant politicians.

So I doubt the photos will be in the magazine or anything, he just wants the ruckus.

2010-03-12 07:04:32 AM
I sometimes wonder if Larry actually wants to get the First Amendment repealed, and to do this, he seeks out the most egregiously offensive ways to operate under the Amendment just to make people hate it.

Like I said in a TFD thread, if this were Dominick Dunne (RIP) trying to write a true crime piece for Vanity Fair, there wouldn't be all this hubbub.

Domminck Dunne wouldn't ask for pictures of the body. A wide shot of the crime scene, but not the body.

Perhaps, but I think the family has a right to not be taunted and harassed with those pictures. Do you know what the dregs of internet society did with the crime scene pictures of Nikki Catsouras? No family deserves something like that.

I'm a little too close to this case to be unbiased (Gary Hilton lived in my neighborhood), but I can see no value whatsoever in the publication of these photos. The dead girl had put up a valiant fight and she should be left to rest in peace.

You are so off the mark on this one. It's not about censorship, it's about respect for the family.

"DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Dan Coursey Wednesday ruled release of the photos could cause irreparable harm in response to a suit filed by Emerson's family."

How would you like pictures of your decapitated, naked daughter floating around all over the place? Granted, they could still surely leak out, but they should make every effort to keep that from happening.

So, where do we draw the line? How egregious does a crime have to be for it to supercede the first amendment?
