I love Canada. It's so clean and bland.

"At the center of much of the city's athlete nightlife is an event planner and promoter named Mona Halem, a former employee of the Air Canada Centre, which is home to the Raptors. Ms. Halem has become "notorious" throughout the sports world, says Raptors forward Antoine Wright, for assembling attractive party guests to fete nearly every franchise that comes to town."

Wonderful. So we've got an official pimp for pro sports teams. That's classy.

Yeah, I also noticed they misspelled 'fellate' as 'fete'.

DNRTFA, but Toronto is a pretty dope town. Only been a few times, but always had fun. Had some memorable nights that I don't remember too much about, if you know what I'm saying. I vaguely remember a night that started at Pravda and ended face-down on the floor in my hotel room with a liver-spiking hangover the next morning.

/yeah, yeah cool story bro

Hey! Are you suggesting that the Leafs are a bad team!? Well, are you!?

I am offen....ah....screw it. It's true. They do suck.

Toronto is awesome.

Funfact: I took a class with B.J. Armstrong. Nice guy, also he was freaking adorable!

When the Raptors resign Chris Bosh we can talk.

You just described every memory I have of Toronto from when I was 19 and 20.

Oh nobody wants to live there, just have a road game there with an extra day off.

Most pro athletes have a "home" in Florida for tax reason.

Hmm, 19-year-olds can drink, naked strippers and good restaurants. Sounds like a terrible place for young athletes.

Toronto is a fine, mostly clean, mostly safe city. Kind of bland, no real character to it, but it's a fine city otherwise.

FWIW, all the "big" Canadian cities have a larger "international flair" than most ignorant Americans would figure.

Hell, even Deadmonton has a Chinatown.

I'll believe this when any of Toronto's major sports franchises signs/drafts/trades for someone to get excited about.

4NSpy: Most pro athletes have a "home" in Florida for tax reason.

That only helps players who don't want to live in the same state in which their team is located. 41/50 states require athletes to pay taxes on income earned in road games as if it were earned in-state ("Jock Tax"). Also, I believe an athlete has to pay income tax to the state in which his or her team is located no matter where they claim their residence to be.

or the convenience of the must-be-19 drinking law. Rookie guard DeMar DeRozan of the Raptors, who is 20, was ordering chocolate milk at dinner before his teammates told him the good news.

I LOL'd

I like this quote the best:

"It reminds me of Tokyo," says Hideki Matsui, the Angels' new designated hitter...

This could save weeboos thousand of dollars flying to Japan in Boeing 747s.

Dear Toronto,

I like your city in general, and athletes may love coming to visit. But may we have our Bills back? They're losers, but they're our losers. And this one-game-a-season thing isn't working out for anyone.

Love,
Buffalo

at 500$ a ticket you will have them back in a flash. NOBODY is going to pay that much here. They overshot the market by about 300$.

Don't worry, the NFL in Toronto was Ted Rogers dream and now he's dead. His kids really have no interest in getting a team. That and since the Toronto Olympics bid died there is no way to get a suitable NFL stadium there now anyways.

Did the writer say something bad about poutine? And you wonder where the stereotypical "ignorant american" perspective comes from. Ya I know it's the Wall street journal and it doesn't reflect everyone but now you're just being an ass.

I remember sitting in a bar in Toronto, talking to some guy from Detroit who was just amazed that he had walked two blocks from his hotel without anybody trying to mug him.

bingethinker: I remember sitting in a bar in Toronto, talking to some guy from Detroit who was just amazed that he had walked two blocks from his hotel without anybody trying to mug him.

That's like trying to explain to someone in Portland what a bad neighborhood in Buffalo is like. You have to see it to believe it exists.

International flair? I bet they don't even have an Ikea

Funny, just about a year ago my coworker went up with 2-3 friends to Toronto for a weekend. They got jumped on a Saturday night by a group of 8-10 guys, got beat down pretty well and one of them had their wallet taken. Good times.

/hmm on second thought it may have been Montreal

If it was Toronto, that kind of thing happens pretty much only in the shady areas of town. And when you're in a shady area of town, you KNOW you're in a shady area of town. Regent Park represents, yo.

T.O. is a great city. Its kind of like New York, just without the threat of imminent death or mugging around every corner.

And yes...full nudity at strip clubs is pretty awesome

/Canadian, lives in Ottawa...the stuffy, sports hating Capital of Canada (except hockey of course, as long as the Sens are winning)

GavinTheAlmighty: Toronto is a fine, mostly clean, mostly safe city. Kind of bland, no real character to it, but it's a fine city otherwise.

I've found that the lack of character sort of is Toronto's character. Instead of a single identity, it's a mishmash of islands of different cultures, most of which are distinct and vibrant enough to have their own local character. It's like a stew instead of a melting pot.

Montreal is home to the Montreal Grand Prix every June, which also brings with it lots of women and big rollers. You want a real party town, then come to Montreal in June.

We also speak French here if you want international flavour.

And we have better food.

Montreal rocks. I haven't been there in a few years now but I have some great memories of that city downtown in the summertime in years past.

Toronto = meh

Why is it that people from Toronto are always tooting their horn about how awesome Toronto is, even when they MOVE FROM TORONTO to other places?

/was sick of hearing it in school.
//still sick of it.
///every city has its pluses and minuses. I live near Vancouver. Pretty but small and the pretentiousness of the locals is just awful.
////Very hard to pick up women in a Vancouver bar unless you're making >100,000/yr and have a sweet car.
